A: Many Japanese Maples are under story trees and would often get burnt in a hot, full sun environment. So, if you are planting them below some other bigger trees, they could work great. As always, plant health is soil health, so attend to your soil microbiology with sensitivity and research. **Q: Our new rock garden** *(in Design Dilemma)* Help! We are stuck! After much prep work ie removing big old tree and roots, laying fabric and rock and planting a new little Maple we are finding this rock garden a little Boeing to say the least. Any ideas on how we can redesign or improve and finish this nightmare!!!! A: Yes, I agree with the sentiments to add some more mass using larger and fewer rocks. I like left47's comment about a large rock near the maple. Also, I would remove the line of similarly sized rocks, all in a row.
