## Community Q&A

**Q: Microwave dilemma.... Drawer vs Door vs Standard ?** *(in Appliances)*

I have a large kitchen and considering a built-in microwave... either a drawer (under cabinet) or door (above the wall oven). Either locations would make sense with our zoning. I also have enough space in my 5x9 walk-in pantry where a standard microwave can sit parked on the counter out of the way.

Would you recommend your drawer or drop down door microwave? Why or why not?

I like the idea of the drawer (example Sharp flip up control panel) because I could examine the food by looking directly down into it, or give things a stir, without having to reach in & pull things out. However I do see commenters complain about how annoying they are to clean. And slow to open.

With a drop down door above a wall oven, I've also read it's annoying to clean, because of the door swung open toward your body, especially if at shoulder height. 

And of course, you see posts all over this forum that they breakdown and die and cost an arm and a leg to repair/replace. One lady said her Wolf door built in microwave started sparking just 2 months into it and then died completely. Sure that could happen with any microwave, but that thing cost her $2,500  $$$

So tell me about your experience....

A: There’s no wrong answer! I’ve designed both ways for my clients. The nice thing about having them a little higher is that it’s more ergonomic.

**Q: black and brushed nickel in bathroom.** *(in Bathrooms)*

Does anyone have picture of a bathroom with a combination of black and brushed nickel hardware? Our designer told us this would work if we did black pulls and mirror frame and brushed nickel for fixtures include faucets, tub filler and shower fixtures. We currently love this bathroom- and are wanting something similar, but considering brushed nickel faucets.

A: Yes, I did this for a client. It turned out great.

**Q: Vanity Light Question** *(in Bathrooms)*

Bathroom redo. Question: if my vanity is 41" wide and mirror is 36" wide, would a vanity light that goes above the mirror that is 32" wide work?

A: Yes, that would work!

**Q: New Waterfall/ bartop installation concerns** *(in Home Repair)*

We decided to remodel our kitchen and requested a contractor to replace the countertop and raised bartop.  We asked to make a waterfall instead of a bartop. From a distance, the overall job looks good.  However, there are several issues that keep me worried about their job quality and durability:
1\) there are ½ inch gaps between the marble waterfall walls and 2x4’’ studs on both sides (they obviously cut the bartop longer than measured).
2\) there is a gap under the 18’’-wide marble bartop (there is a 11’’ overhang) almost along its entire length (125’’). This creates the impression that most of the waterfall bartop lays only on its free-standing vertical walls (metered joints with epoxy). There are 4 flat metal brackets underneath but at least 3 of them do not touch the bartop marble, as the gap was sealed with caulking now.
3\) there is a slope across the bartop that makes ¼ inch.

Main questions: Is it safe? Is it acceptable? The installers say that it is safe, but I am not sure.
Should I add thin metal shims to make contact between the marble and metal brackets at least? Is it reasonable to request an extended warranty, for example 3 years, for the construction stability instead of the routine 1 year?
I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
P.S.: Additionally, I see that the quartz countertop is somehow raised at the seam area (the sink area). Is it possible the stone was not flat originally, or did they improperly level it at the seam area?

A: There are always acceptable variances in standards for all things remodeling. This is outside of what would be typically acceptable.
If the substrate was not level, they should have shimmed it or refused to install.
The gapping shouldn’t be consistent across the entire underside and the support brackets should be supporting.
I would ask for a manager to come out to look at it with you and review your concerns.

**Q: Bathroom vanity installation problem** *(in Electrical Wiring)*

Hello.  My contractor installed a rectangular blue electrical box in the tile above my medicine cabinet.  When the electrician came to install the vanity light, he discovered that the back plate of the light that goes over the electrical box is round.  The round back plate of the light doesn't completely cover the corners of the blue box.  Neither of the trades is offering a solution and I don't know what to do.  Here is a picture of the electrical box that I need to cover completely and again, the back of the vanity light is round (just shy of 5" in diameter) not rectangular.  Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

A: Is there anything prohibiting them from removing that piece of tile, correcting the junction box, and then installing a new piece of tile? This is what I'd recommend unless there's something serious in the way that would stop the tile from being removed. This should be at their cost.

**Q: Small kitchen food pantry** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Any ideas on converting this small pantry into a more efficient one?  ‘Small kitchen with little cabinet storage and 8 ft ceiling.  The counter tops are quartz.  Thanks!

A: There are two options to make this work well. 
One is to install rollouts. The roll-outs will be the most economical option and are adjustable in height or can sit on the existing shelves. 
The other option is to convert the entire inside to a Hafele Pantry rollout. This is much more expensive, but the door would slide towards you and all the contents would be visible.
