Emerick Architects is a Portland-based commercial and residential architecture firm founded in 2000 by principals Melody and Brian Emerick. Our mission is to create locally rooted, environmentally sensitive and thoughtfully crafted spaces, while providing a fun and collaborative experience for our clients throughout the process.

From designing and building Portland's first LEED Gold home, to being entrusted to restore Portland's oldest commercial building, we take community and environmental stewardship to heart. We esteem great craftsmanship, believing that an investment in craft is an investment in quality. Preservation, sustainability and artistry are synonymous with our work. Together these ideals help us to energize our communities, protect our resources and enhance our cultural values.

At Emerick Architects, we are passionate about collaboration and feel the building process should be enjoyable. Fun might not be what most architecture firms advertise, but we are not like most architecture firms. We invest a lot of time with our clients, getting to know the project, and more importantly, the people involved. Building can be stressful and intimidating, but we strive to make it easier. As leaders and collaborators, we take our job very seriously — but we don't take ourselves too seriously.

**★★★★★ — Matt Watson, June 2023**

> Working with Emerick Architects over the years has been an absolute pleasure. The level of collaboration we experienced was truly remarkable, as Brian and Melody consistently engaged in thoughtful discussions that resulted in meaningful and outstanding work. We take immense pride in the projects that have emerged from our partnership with Emerick. Their team's expertise and dedication to delivering a premium architectural experience are truly commendable. If you're seeking excellence in architecture, I wholeheartedly recommend Melody and Brian's team at Emerick Architects.

**★★★★★ — Rebecca Haas, Jan. 2018**

> We partnered with Emerick Architects on the remodel of our kitchen and the transformation of our large backyard and were thrilled with their ideas, design knowledge, their professionalism and especially with the outcome.
>
> Our 1908 house is on the historic registry and we knew we’d need a firm with experience navigating the various permitting processes. The staff at Emerick are pros at this.
>
> The challenge was to transform our very dated 1980’s kitchen into a modern space that also reflected our Craftsman home’s historic character. Our remodel design involved the removal of a wall, opening up the kitchen to the rest of the house and the installation of a large pair of windows that look out at the backyard. The back of the house was re-configured so we now have a large patio outside the kitchen door, and a new entrance way with a coat room which can be accessed from the back driveway.
>
> It’s mind-boggling how many choices there are before and during a remodel. Melody Emerick was a joy to work with because she was happy to dive in with input and ideas when we needed help, and also willing to step back when we didn’t. I also appreciated the fact that the Emerick team checked in regularly throughout the entire remodel (which lasted the better part of a year), making sure that the contractors delivered on the architect’s vision.

**★★★★★ — MJ K, Jan. 2018**

> Our project with Emerick Architects was a very good experience. There were glitches, as there are in many projects, but Melody and the other members of her company were always available with their knowledge and experience to address the issues as they arose . The deadlines and budgets that we had agreed upon were met and each member of the team provided us with a level of professionalism that made it a positive experience.

**★★★★★ — Karla Arria-Devoe, Jan. 2018**

> We worked with Emerick on a full house remodel. From beginning to end we enjoyed working with Melody & Justin . We most appreciated the attention to detail and their ability to keep all those details organized. Their ability to think ahead helped construction get done as smoothly as possible. We also were thankful that they both understood our vision to keep the house as original as possible but also making it functional for our needs. I cannot imagine working with better people during the entire process.

**★★★★★ — Monica Criteser, Jan. 2018**

> Melody listened well to what we wanted and did an excellent job of remaining consistent with our mid-century architecture. We love the results! She has a great team who truly care about their work and delivering results that keep their clients happy.

> Emerick gives you 5 star service. For our whole house remodel project, the president of the firm worked with us on the big picture concept, presenting several option sketches. Then a talented staff architect was assigned to work on the drawings. They both stay involved throughout the building process, and are very responsive and thorough. An in-house designer will source materials for you to envision your space and help with design elements and choices. I've been impressed with this level of service and will never do another project without the services of a firm like Emerick Architects.

**★★★★★ — annelipsitz, Nov. 2013**

> Emerick Architects guided us through a bathroom remodel project this year. The most important thing they did for us was to completely re conceive the space and bring us options we could never have imagined - all within our budget.
>
> As we got into detailed design, their staff worked with us on materials and color, saving us so much time and bringing our vision to life.
>
> Throughout the building process, Emerick worked seamlessly with the builder to work through the inevitable surprises. They were calm, solution oriented, and always available.

**★★★★★ — sarakelly, Oct. 2013**

> We worked with Emerick Architects on an extensive, whole house remodel. From the creative, initial drawings of our project, to fine tuning the details of the design, to seamless communication through out the project, Emerick consistently delivered first rate, professional, personalized results. Per usual with construction, we encountered issues with the house that Melody, Diane and the entire team at Emerick found solutions resulting in a better finished product. Emerick's extensive experience and knowledge of design, construction, building products and sourcing materials provided us with the best options and a beautiful home. Communication and dialogue with Melody and Diane was easy, fun, effective and professional. We highly recommend Emerick Architects to anyone who wants to enjoy (it's possible) a remodeling project with highly talented, professionals who prioritize their clients throughout a remodel project.

**★★★★★ — karenmularski, Oct. 2013**

> Melody Emerick and Geno Salimena worked with us on 2 separate phases of a home remodeling project. Every step of the way, these architects were professional, timely, and efficient. We were ushered through the design thru building phases with many on-site visits and minutes were kept and emailed after every meeting as the projects progressed. We just love Emerick Architect style and taste and their commitment to quality and honoring the vintage of our home while bringing in modern living amenities. They were incredible about knowing what would and would not work for our space and had definite opinions on design options and even finishes, which we appreciated. Finally, everyone we worked with (especially Melody and Geno) were just wonderful people who kept us laughing through the tough parts the remodel (such as spousal differences of opinion and living sans kitchen for months.) They clearly love Portland and have contributed beauty to many buildings and homes in our city, and we can't recommend them highly enough. :)

**★★★★★ — yoonapark, Oct. 2013**

> We hired Emerick Architects to do a full floor master-suite remodel while I was 7 months pregnant. That last bit is important because I was emotional, impatient, and there were (of course) construction delays on the contractor's end. My husband and I met with a few architects but immediately clicked with Melody Emerick. She is calm, measured, thoughtful, but not hesitant to express her opinion when it is sought. The plans she drew up for us were creative and reflected her understanding of our needs and our expectations for the space. And we valued Melody's unerring opinion on aesthetic issues, from everything to how the tile pattern should be laid, to the color of the paint. The final product is a beautiful, calming space where I wish I could spend all of my time. Melody and Juliette were responsive, always showed up on time, and have been around to answer questions long after our remodel concluded. We will work with them again for a kitchen remodel in future. I cannot recommend Emerick Architects highly enough.

**★★★★★ — Laurel Soot, Oct. 2013**

> Melody and Geno were amazing! They were extremely professional, artistic, responsive and brought our dream house to life. Incredibly easy to communicate with and met with us and our builder at almost every site meeting. They were always available if the builder had any questions about the plans and continued to clarify/communicate with us throughout this 9 month whole house remodel. I would absolutely use Emerick again and continue to give their names to anyone looking for a fantastic architect both from a professional and esthetic viewpoint.

**★★★★★ — User, Oct. 2013**

> We hired Emerick Architects recently to do a major remodel on our 1908 Foursquare home. The Emerick Team were very professional and fun to work with. The great communication was a big help in easing the stress for us managing through a project like this. They also worked well with our Contractor, True Blue Construction & Remodeling. We're absolutely thrilled with the finished product. Our new improved home is a joy to live in.

  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: This commercial building was transformed into a residence by adding a second story light-filled living space. An open floor plan, lots of large windows and door panels and 12 foot tall ceilings give it the character of an industrial loft. Custom stainless kitchen cabinetry combined with vintage fixtures and furniture carry out the eclectic feel of an old urban loft.
- [Ponzi Hamacher](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/ponzi-hamacher-pj-vj~2842525)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 19
  - Description: Situated on an awesome piece of vineyard land, this poorly built, 80's split level house was renovated to create a home comfortable enough for these down to earth vintners and their four kids, but elegant enough to host wine events and industry giants. The design was an overhaul of the split level home to create a kids'/guests retreat and a new addition that lives by its indoor/outdoor mantra. The one story addition is anchored by the master suite at one end, a cut-through view to Mt. Hood entry…
- [Northwood Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/northwood-residence-pj-vj~41446)

- [Old Salty](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/old-salty-pj-vj~356999)
  - Location: Seaside, OR
  - Photos: 31
  - Description: With a big "for sale" sign, this house and lot at the coast was priced to be scrapped from its site, but this original 1910 cabin was ripe for rescue. A whole house remodel transformed this dwelling into a charming beach cottage.
- [Mediterranean Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mediterranean-residence-pj-vj~2842276)
  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 18
  - Description: This old, elegant Mediterranean home lost its vision through some poorly executed remodeling efforts. With new owners and a new clarity in the design, this top to bottom remodel shines with elegance and freshness throughout its rooms.
- [Mid-Century Master Suite](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mid-century-master-suite-pj-vj~2842102)
  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: What do you do with a room big enough to be a bedroom, treated like a closet, and surrounded with forest views to make you feel like you are in a tree house? Turn it into a killer Master Bath. The whole Master Suite was reworked in this 1950's Walter Gordon home. It was designed to be seamless with the rest of the house and to pick up materials and details sensitive to a mid-century gem. Bonus spa points: freestanding tub, heated floors and a custom wood sauna.
- [Devoe + Menares Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/devoe-menares-residence-pj-vj~2842168)
  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: We started with a sweet little bungalow that had good bones, but needed light and connection from room to room. We proposed moving the kitchen to a former bedroom and opened it up to the dining room and the whole house breathed easier. That opened up the corner for a custom designed and built lounge area that is flooded with light. Upstairs, a similarly unique move was made- we took the little sun porch and enlarged it to make it the new master bedroom- and the best room in the house was created…
- [Haas Aldrich](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/haas-aldrich-pj-vj~2842509)
  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: This beautiful historic Portland home was saddled with a kitchen that didn't fit with the rest of the house. New windows, raised ceilings and an open plan were key in transforming this kitchen from a dark, dead end space to the light and airy room it is now. The exterior scope involved transforming a deteriorating patio into an outdoor dining space that also serves as the family's main entry into the home.
- [Mid-Century Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mid-century-residence-pj-vj~1462063)
  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: The beauty in this expansive Walter Gordon, mid-century home was that it had been untouched since it was built. The challenge was remodeling the heart of it- the kitchen, family room, mudroom, dining area- so that it was functional and beautiful for a family of five. The results were exacting details and subtle changes even a visitor that had seen the house before the remodel could not pinpoint. They only saw a home that felt refreshed, airy and warm.
- [Colonial Remodel](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/colonial-remodel-pj-vj~2104814)
  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: Sometimes the best place in the house is where you spend the least time. This remodel project is a great case in point. Located in the hills of Portland with commanding views to the east, this home’s dining room was that place. This family of four lived in their kitchen- and by swapping the kitchen and dining rooms the whole first floor is infused with new energy.
- [SW Portland Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/sw-portland-residence-pj-vj~2842607)
  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: This 1950s Wade Pipes designed home was warm, exquisitely crafted and nestled in a park-like setting. What it lacked was cohesiveness with its more utilitarian rooms. The rooms that are the heart and soul of our daily movements- the kitchen, family room, entry, mudroom, bathrooms and outdoor patio. Using that original clean lined craftsmanship as an inspiration, we set out to create a whole house filled with beauty and warmth.
- [Briscoe](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/briscoe-pj-vj~2842495)
  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: This kitchen remodel embodies the word "hub". All family activity here centers around the joy of gathering with loved ones, preparing food together and relishing time with each other. Situated in a colonial home, it needed some elegant touches to flow with the rest of the house, but also a hint of fun and warmth to add some new energy to the space. Details like a fun marble tile, brass hardware and a wall of windows add character. The banquet takes the place of a former cramped side entry and a…
- [Aurora Farmhouse](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/aurora-farmhouse-pj-vj~2200719)
  - Location: Aurora, OR
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: Small, rural and homey-words this new custom home needed to embody. With an acreage setting in Aurora and a working farm surrounding it, we crafted this home to feel familiar with its barn shape yet elegant through its emphasis on craftsmanship. Timber framed spans open up this little jewel box and big windows let the outdoors in.
- [Huberty Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/huberty-residence-pj-vj~2104874)
  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: A 1980s builder spec house that sits on a killer site needed to be updated to better tie the two together. As typical with this era, rooms were big but inefficient. We stepped in to master plan all three floors and to create a warm, elegant home for an active family of five. As with most things in a home, it all started with the kitchen. Previously dated and dark, we reconfigured it, opened it up to the southern light, and gave it fresh, crisp and classic details.

- [MacEachern Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/maceachern-residence-pj-vj~42062)
  - Location: Portland, OR
  - Photos: 5
  - Description: This classic 1920'a home was remodeled in the 1980's with an addition that looked like a space ship had landed on top of it. The new homeowners wanted their master suite to feel like a retreat and a perch over the neighborhood from which they could gaze at the trees and river beyond.
- [Midrano Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/midrano-residence-pj-vj~2106444)

  - Description: This old Portland-style home was filled with light and elegance in all rooms-except the kitchen. We looked at several options to upgrade this but ultimately realized the kitchen needed to move to a new location. Now with more space, an outdoor connection to a patio and a commanding view of Mt. Hood, it is the heart of the house.
