  - Description: Newly redeveloped properties are often fitted with generic kitchens and this client was looking for a one-of-a-kind statement kitchen. The former tannery had wood beams, skylights, and a mezzanine loft but the finishes were spartan. The beams and cables that support the structure were a hazard to navigation so they were incorporated into a twelve-foot countertop and bar opposite a wall of sliding stone tile panels and a run of grain matched walnut cabinets.

**Q: what material is the backspash made of?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Wondering if this is just beadboard or tile?

A: The backsplash consists of framed panels that match the cabinetry.

**Q: laurierMax vs HAAS cabinets?** *(in Building a Home)*

My contractor proposed HAAS first, now he wants me to install LaurierMax. Need advice!

A: I'm a Lauriermax dealer and have been working with the company for 15 years. The people who work there are down to earth and extemely friendly. Individual dealers, however can be good or bad. If a customer wants to confirm the ETA of their order I can find that out with a quick phone call or email. These days we get a weekly order status report but end users are not allowed access to factory data. That's not the way it works.

**Q: Kitchen sink under window or in island?** *(in Polls)*

We are gutting our kitchen taking down walls and adding an island. Our current kitchen is a galley kitchen with 36" cabinet and counter top on the left then sink and window, then dishwasher and 24" cabinet to the right and then kitchen stove, 9" spice cabinet. 

We are turning the kitchen into an L shape with an island where the fridge use to be that will be where our island is facing our dinning room, family room and entry. I feel like if I put the sink in the island I will be more involved. if I leave it where it currently is then my back will again be towards everyone. BUT I want it to look right too... dilemma, dilemma... please help

A: I can't quite picture your layout without a drawing but I will tell you that the "cooking show kitchen", as I call it is most successful if your prep area faces the audience. It's nice to have a prep sink at hand but a kitchen towel and a scrap bowl will suffice.

**Q: Refridgerator Fit - Cabinet install issue, suggestions please** *(in Appliances)*

We had custom cabinets and countertops put in by a local company. After our design meeting they asked us to go to get the specs for our appliances so they could be sure everything fit after we reviewed the design. We left and immediately got those and had them back to the company within the hour which they put in our file. In addition they had a copy of our house plan which had details for the kitchen.

Our contractor installed the fridge this week and to our dismay the right hand door does not open the amount expected. It is very difficult to remove drawers and the handle hits the wall and trim. The opening for the fridge is tight so the doors bind in places on the trim.

Looking over the house plan we gave them it mentions an oversized stile is required on the right hand side. Our contractor said they did not do that when I asked because I do not know what that is.

Going back and looking at the specs on the fridge say a minimum of 3-3/4" but they didn't allow that much.
I brought these concerns up with the contractor but he said he feels they aren't willing to do anything about it.

Thoughts on what we can do?

A: The photo looks like the filler is approximately the right size but if it's not 3.75" then the contractor messed up and needs to fix it. I agree with erinsean about reducing the left hand filler return. It may be a day's work to get it right but that is the correct solution. If the contractor won't step up you could have it done yourself. The only other physical solution I see would be to move the door opening closer the the refrigerator so the handle wouldn't hit.
The curved door is what's causing the problem so you could try getting a new fridge but DO NOT get a left hand hinge.
