> We strongly recommend Melanie Giolitti. Melanie helped transform our house into something spectacular – this would not have happened without her – her contribution cannot be overstated. Although we engaged talented and experienced craftsmen (some who she introduced), without Melanie’s vision and designs, the results would have been less remarkable.
>
> We embarked on a full house remodel (100% gutted) and were auspiciously connected with Melanie. Right away, we realized she would bring a unique vision to our project. We wanted to be heavily involved and had a lot of ideas about what we wanted and maybe more about what we did not want. We were looking for someone who would collaborate with us. Melanie was adept at working with our ideas but bringing her professional expertise and creative designs to the table. Melanie has a keen eye for design and scale. Her hand drawn sketches bring her designs to life and are an invaluable communication tool.
>
> Melanie’s talent can be seen everywhere in our project – numerous details, large and small – from kitchen and bath layouts; to material selections; to custom cabinet designs; to vintage lighting selection and placement; to hardware selections; to custom finishes and much, much more. We leveraged Melanie’s talents not only for interior design but also to improve exterior architectural and landscape elements. She turned problems into design opportunities and the result is superb. She made several recommendations that we would never have formulated on our own without her professional guidance – the result is beautiful, unique, and very satisfying.

> We met Melanie in 2006 and worked with her on our "new build" Craftsmen Style home in Pacific Grove. She helped us with ever aspect of design / build on the project. Her vision and problem solving was invaluable. She created the most authentic, warm and charming Craftsmen home. We were so pleased with her work that in 2013 we hired Melanie once again as designer for our "new build" California Spanish Revival home in Palos Verdes Estates. Her ability and versatility to transition into a different style home and immerse herself into every detail is amazing. We have highly recommended her to friends and family and all have been thrilled.

> We began working with Melanie in the early stages of rebuilding a 1950's era home in Palos Verdes Estates. It was a complex project, requiring extensive structural modifications and room redesigns. Melanie's architectural background was critical in collaborating with our general contractor, and was an important complement to her impeccable interior design skills. Her thoughtful selection of paint colors, fabrics, fixtures and furnishings reflect our family and lifestyle. The result is a finished product that is both highly functional and visually striking. We would not hesitate to use her again on any design project we take on and have recommended her to friends and family.

**★★★★★ — Mike and Renee Child, April 2019**

> We worked with Melanie on 3 projects over 6 years. She was great! And we would use her again. In 2 cases she helped at the building design phase with material selection and layout. In all cases she helped with interior design and decorating including paint, tile, cabinets and other material selections as well as furnishings, draperies, carpets and accessories. She was able to mix old and new as well as full priced and thrifty finds. She has a great sense of design, is responsible and fun to work with.

**★★★★★ — Darlene Mosley, April 2019**

> I had the pleasure of working with Melanie years ago in the SF Bay Area when we both worked for a production builder. She was a young designer and I worked in sales. I was delighted to reconnect with Melanie when I needed professional help with my home in Carmel. She quickly and professionally put the finishing touches on my remodel. Then again when I did an addition to our home Melanie worked from start to finish with the interior design of a new guest suite and den. I couldn’t be happier with the design and finish. Very talented and easy to work with. Melanie has great ideas, beautiful taste and made the project fun. She has a great eye for color. People have left notes on our door telling us how much they love our exterior colors. Our house has even been copied by friends on the other end of town. Melanie has the knowledge and understanding of construction needed to work with architects, builders, suppliers and of course her clients. Melanie is a 5 star designer.

## Community Q&A

**Q: I love the wood and the stain used here.** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you tell me the wood species and what they did to get the final finish? Thank you.

A: Thank you for your inquiry. I believe the species is \#2 walnut/clear - no knots. They first started with bleaching the wood and then the finish was multi-layered (5-8 layers) process by artists that specialize in finishes. It's difficult to achieve this look with just one or two steps to the finish process. You may be able to find someone in your area that can help you achieve this. You could achieve something similar with Alder/clear (no knots), which is less expensive than walnut.

**Q: What is the wood species and finish on this lovely vanity?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Thanks

A: Thank you for your inquiry. The wood species is \#2 walnut and the finish is custom; i.e., bleaching the wood and at least 8 layers of finish were applied in various tones to achieve the final result. It's difficult to achieve depth and patina with just one or two layers of finish. It's a laborious process, but worth the result.

**Q: Would you provide the name of the fabricator of the metal shutters?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I would really appreciate it if you could provide the contact information for the local fabricator you utilized to make the shutters for the Carmel Cottage.
Thank you and regards,

A: You're welcome. Have a nice holiday season as well.

**Q: I love the ornate basin and would love to source it, am a builder....** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, the tile company closed their doors a couple of years ago. I'm not aware of another company that offers something similar, as this was a stained process applied to the tile. You may want to look at Tabarka as an alternative as they have a painterly quality to them. Note that their tiles are not suitable for showers or direct contact with water. Hope this helps.

**Q: chandelier** *(in Photo Questions)*

please provide source for chandelier (p.s. gorgeous!).

A: Thank you for your inquiry. The chandelier is a one of a kind antique and the source is no longer in business. I'd suggest sourcing lighting locally as it's very important to see fixtures in person.

**Q: What tile was used here? Was it pre-sealed?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thank you for your inquiry. This project was completed 8+ years ago and not sure if the tile is still available. You can contact The Tile Studio @ 831.394.3022 where it was purchased and they can advise. It is a fired & glazed tile as most are, therefore, sealing the tile is not necessary. I would advise to seal the grout and your installer can guide you.
