## Community Q&A

**Q: where to stop tile?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

The concern is the backsplash tile on the right side of the sink. Where to I stop them? I hope to install open shelves on the small wall to the right of the windows above the sink. with 3.5 inch trim on both sides (there is a door casing) I only have 20 inches to consider. The Ann Sack's terra cotta tile has no good edge so I was thinking of running the tile up and under the bottom shelf (18 inches off counter) or up and under the top shelf that would be 18 inches off the ceiling. the tile is pale blue glazed and all else is off-white including the countertops.

A: Would a rough edge be so bad? You're on a lake, out in the country, a bit rustic. It might be fitting. What kind of wood are the cabinets and style? If you haven't ordered them yet you can extend it to the door trim and eliminate the need for a strip down to the baseboard.

**Q: HELP 21' kitchen ceilings, needing lights!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My husband and I are building a home and our kitchen has 21' ceilings. A "farmhouse feel" Our countertops will be honed/leathered absolute black with chrome fixtures.... I am having a dilemma with lighting.

A: Congrats on the new home. It is a very exciting time for people. I've had clients that get as giddy as children on Christmas morning.

Anyway... Wow! 21 feet. That IS a lighting dilemma. What ever you do you should incorporate ceiling fans because you will need to heat that space up there too. One fan per 100sf, roughly speaking. Have you thought if soffit/s? Kitchens need sufficient task lighting and a soffit is a good way to get light down to that tasking level. I always propose soffits (with recessed cans) for ceilings above 8ft. I did a soffit 'idea book' that might give you some ideas. I'd include a link but I'm posting via my phone. Just click on my screen name above, that will get you there.

You could also do pendants. But you'll need 10-12ft of cable to hang them from. I might have a lighting idea book as well, if not I can make one when I get to my desk. Do you have drawings that you can post (or email)? Preferably a floor plan and some interior elevations? A better sense of the space might reveal better ideas.

Best if luck,

**Q: Traditional and contemporary** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Purchased spectacular waterfront/view property in nova scotia.
Area of traditional cape cod style homes. Would like a house that blends traditional and contemporary features.
Some restrictive covenants apply. Less applicable if footprint

A: Wow! midmodfan's photo above is a great example of expressing the modern while paying homage to the traditional. I like it!

**Q: Help with a narrow corridor!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

A long narrow corridor leading from front door of apartment to bedrooms. Any ideas how to make it more spacious. Would pictures make it too busy/enclosed? Thanks!

A: Short of a sledge hammer it looks fine. It's well lit and un-cluttered. In this state it functions well as a passage between rooms while still being comfortable. If you clutter the walls with pictures or paintings the functions goes from passage to gallery. And as a gallery it's just too tight. Hope this helps.

**Q: Wall mounted faucets in the bathroom** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am in the process of building a new home. For three of the bathrooms I have chosen wall mounted faucets. They have installed the plumbing, not the faucets yet. They seem too high! One bathroom has a dresser that is 38 inches high. The sink sits on the dresser and the portion not recessed is 4" high. The plumber says the faucets needs to be another 8" above the sink. This makes what I think, a faucet so high that you can't place a mirror above it. I don't want to cut the feet off of it because they are too nice and I think it would look bad. My question is, can I lower the plumbing for the faucet? The faucet I am using is Pfister Carnegie. Please help me save my dresser and my sanity!

A: As an architect I would sketch up a quick section to show the options. If you have an architect drop your concerns in his lap. You shouldnt have to worry about these things. If you do not have an architect get a spec sheet from the manufacturer and ask your plumber to show you why it needs to be 8", with either a drawing or a mock-up. You can probably get a spec sheet (also known as a cut sheet) from their website. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

**Q: This room needs something - but what?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I don't know what to do with the big wall behind the sofa. To me the room is almost there but needs something else to really make it special.

A: Ok, keep an open mind here. I'd replace the china cabinet and chair with a box type bookshelf and an oversized lounge chair. Remove everything from the walls except a large piece of art behind the sofa. Replace the heavy drapes and valance with white shear drapes. Just a few ideas, but that's probably more than you were expecting huh?. Good luck.
