## Community Q&A

**Q: Siding an addition to traditional Stucco Tudor** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My contractor is trying to get us to use siding on our in progress addition to our very traditional brick and stucco Tudor.  Our architect spec called for stucco.  Our contractor feels stucco holds moisture and claims he is trying to save $.  I am concerned more with how it will blend.  It is the back of the house but I still want it to look right

A: Great advice- A RAIN SCREEN is very important, and required here in the Pacific Northwest...The local region is also important to consider, but if you have a conditioned space and a change in temperature from inside to out, wind or rain, you will have vapor drive.  Your Architect should be able to provide a few details at penetrations and top and bottom of the walls.  Also have a look at the web and this article...

**Q: Please explain the type of underlayment used under the steel siding.** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: I have heard of doubled layers recently , but primarily for an open gap system where UV exposure is part of the equation.  Building Science for envelope design is a pretty technical arena.  I might be a little careful doubleing up on the WRB's as the perm rating is affected.
