So after many years of having the backyard look the same, I'm looking for advice and Ideas on how to bring it into the modern days. Last year we rebuilt the deck and installed a hottub. This year I'm looking to redo the landscape. All advice and ideas are appreciate as I do not know where to begin. I love the ideas of water feature and fire place. A: Our head horticulturist had some initial questions upon looking at your photos and if you have the time to take and answer these questions he would be happy to give you some ideas. He is brilliant! Do you like to work in the yard? Do you plan to entertain- a little or a lot? Do you like your fence? Maybe pressure wash it-then stain it or create a green fence. Dee Runk Boxwood, Emerald Green Arborvitae or upright hornbeams would do the trick over time. Seems like lots of vines on the fence. Maybe they’re cool plants! What are your goals for the new landscape? Color, perennials, plants with exfoliating bark or weeping plants. Add more pots for color? Maintenance goals-high or low? Budget? What are your goals. Make your wish list and share with your landscape contractor! **Q: Garden Dilemnma: Love trees but need to chop them down ... Help! :)** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi all, we're about to embark on a refurbishment of the house and want to renew the garden also. The issue we have is that we have some large trees which we love looking at. However they have grown so large now that they are blocking sunlight, we worry about future subsidence issues, and they have just become unmanageable. They now block sunsets which we get directly at the back. Would be great to bring those back. We want to update to a fairly modern garden. A place to grow vegetables, a wide shed at the back, manageable fruit/decorative/nature-friendly trees. Can anyone see a vision for that type of garden which doesn't involve chopping all/most of the evergreens down and replanting different trees? We have concluded that that is what we need to do that to update it. However we are quite attached to them and averse to chopping down any trees, really. We thought about trimming the trees but reckon it's not going to work. Any ideas appreciated, A: This is a message from our Head Horticulturist and if you have the time to answer the questions he is happy to give you some suggestions. Can’t say whether or not to cut the trees down but I do have questions that should help determine a solution. What is your real goal(s)- sunsets, screening or views vs better quality sun to grow vegetable? Most vegetable require at least 6 hr. of sun to preform well. Can you thin canopies if the evergreens to improve light quality? If not, which tree(s) absolutely have to be removed? Will raised garden beds work someplace else in the yard- different vegetable gardening method-which can yield 100’s of pounds of fruit. Why not incorporate vegetables in existing planting beds-where the is plenty of sun. Lettuce would make an excellent ground cover. Blue berries provide 3 season of interest in the landscape- white blooms, blue fruit and new stem growth is red into late Fall/early Winter. Your landscape is your own-make it meet your needs. It does not matter what anyone else thinks-well maybe your significant other’s opinion is important. Shed can go anywhere –sun or shade. What’s your goal? **Q: Landscape Design Question** *(in Design Dilemma)* I recently had a patio, fireplace, fire pit and pizza oven installed. I had a local landscape design firm come out to give me a quote. I liked what they suggested. should I have 2 other firms come to give me a quote? They didn't leave me with drawings to compare. Is this common? How do I make an informed decision with no plans? Is there a standard price for plans? I don't see me spending $50,000 simply by meeting one firm and no plans. ANY SUGGESTIONS??????? A: Pologuy, when they aren't offered it just makes it uncomfortable because I think it is a given that they should be presented to the client with such an obviously big project. I handle all of the social media and irrigation here actually, but I am quite impressed with how the owner and our head horticulturist handle themselves. We aren't as big as some of the other landscapers and that is because we do not want to be. We make it personal and are with you every step of the way. I think emailing them and asking them for the plan is an excellent idea. If they still tell you no, I, personally, would get proposals from other companies and when initially speaking to them tell them you want a plan you can look over. Your wants may be the same for all of them but their visions will be different and one of them may come up with something you didn't think of and you should be able to have those and compare to and pick the best company that has given you the vision that you desire. Good luck! **Q: Privacy hedges to block noise** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi! am considering buying a house located on a busy street in Los anglers area. I was interested in planting privacy plants for ambiance and to block traffic noise. It's a large lot. any advice on surrounding a large front yard I terms of low maintenance plants that can block noise and view? A: We actually wrote a blog about this last year. You will never get rid of all of the noise however, there are many different levels and things you can do to deflect some of the noise. Here are some pictures of the house as it looks now. The porch is level, but the steps are completely warped and uneven, and the walkways is cracked. We love our red clay tile roof and the stucco (will possibly re-paint the white to a cream color), but we would like to modernize the aesthetic, with some cleaner lines. Scrolling through the Houzz pictures, I think a natural bluestone with some red tones, or maybe brick would coordinate well w/the roof. Are there other stones/masonry ideas we should consider? Maybe just stick with wood for the steps so it integrates better with the wood porch? Also, my parents are elderly so hand rails would be great to help them walk up the stairs. But not sure how to combine the look of the rails in with the stucco column columns in a manner that doesn't look too dated. Front porch floor is wood and currently painted a blue-gray. We will also be re-painting so we could go w/a new color to coordinate with the new steps and walkway. You can use the Liberty Blend for the border which has the red tones that would tie in your roof. This pattern I feel would have a more "cobblestone" feel which would lend to the overall feel of your Colonial home more than a slate would. Slate seems a more modern line. I would replace the steps with curved steps. The curve would go very well with the lines in your home and the columns. The Liberty could be the underneath portion of the steps (the riser) it would all tie in quite well.
