As a photographer, I've traveled widely and when schedules permit, find I prefer to explore cities rather than the countryside, no matter how inspiring. As I visited more buildings, I became more discriminating in my taste. I have opinions on buildings, based not only on how they appear in their environment, but on how harmonious their interiors are and how pleasing the relationship of the whole.
I've personally restored several significant buildings, including a 1881 Fromann & Jebsen designed bank in Chicago and a 1951 Keck & Keck mid-century modern home in Glencoe, as well as having re-purposed a number of industrial spaces into photography studios.
I feel fortunate to be able to document the work of past and current architects. It’s a responsibility I take seriously, as I know well that most people experience buildings in photographs. In that respect, I try to help people experience the building as the architect intended, with whatever natural and artificial light he or she provided. To me, buildings are not stage sets to be dramatized, but spaces to be experienced and enjoyed. The experience of being there is what I aspire to create for the viewer..
This documentary responsibility has led me to donate more than 500 images to the SAHARA site of the Society of Architectural Historians, making them available to students and scholars. I intend to continue with this practice. I have also worked with the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust to document their sites, and for many years have photographed the houses and buildings included on
the famous Wright Plus house walk. In addition, I have been pleased to donate images to the Glessner and Clarke House museums, the Unity Temple Restoration Foundation, the Charnley-Persky House, the Paul Schweikher House Preservation Trust and the Richard Nickel Committee, among others.

> Jim is an incredibly talented photographer with an eye for architectural detail. His work at our historic Mid-Century Modernist home really captured its essence. We loved his work so much that we have invited him to come back to take more shots!

> Jim is an outstanding architectural photographer, and one who visually captures my projects in ways that make even myself see them anew. I’ve worked with Jim on many different types of assignments and in every case Jim brings his unique technical and artistic talents to create results that have yet to disappoint. The images he creates are not only beautiful, but also connect with the viewer in a way that makes you wish you could step into the photo and experience that space. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Jim for almost 10 years—I look forward to many more.

> Jim is the best photographer of homes I've ever had the pleasure to hire/work with. He has a true architects eye when deciding how to capture a space and because of that his photographs are astounding. Always professional and a true perfectionist I love working with Jim and seeing the art he creates.

**★★★★★ — annllyon, Jan. 2017**

> James Caulfield is the most talented photographer that I have met in the past 25 years of working with photographers. He is able to capture buildings and significant elements of architecture in a way I rarely, if ever see. His passion for his work is evident throughout the entire process. His photos make rooms come to life and capture the essence of each space. He is sensitive to time constraints and deadlines and goes beyond expectations.

**★★★★★ — Jack Gniadecki, Jan. 2017**

> Throughout my career, I have worked with Jim countless times on a wide variety of projects; fashion/beauty, tabletop, environment/room scene photography. He is wonderfully skilled as a photographer...an exceptional talent with a developed aesthetic and an open mind for collaborating! Jim consistently pushes himself to create the best quality images every time.

**★★★★★ — Steve Tilkin, Jan. 2017**

> I hired Jim to photograph a group of upscale public space trash receptacles. We had designed these receptacles for the high end hotel trade. We determined that these units needed to be professionally photographed for presentations to interior designers, hotel senior management, management groups and purchasing groups.
>
> Jim's photography captured the style we needed represented. As a result of his efforts, our products were specified by several major hotel brands for use in their lobbies and front entrances.

**★★★★★ — Ellen Price, Jan. 2017**

> I work for the Baha'i Faith in the U.S. and we hired James to take photographs of the Baha'i House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois, for display panels we were creating for our new Welcome Center. James' experience with architectural photography, his excellent equipment, his creativity and his editing skills, combined with his helpful, friendly, patient and professional demeanor leads me to highly recommend him to others. (We sell postcards with his photos at our Bookshop.)

**★★★★★ — Bill Sosin, Jan. 2017**

> I have admired your expertise in the various styles of your photographic work for many years. But now, it seems your architectural work is where you really flourish. Your knowledge and intuitive understanding of buildings, inside and out, has shown throughout your array of architectural books, but especially in your newest tome: The Design Within, Inside Great Chicago Buildings, (Pomegranate, 2016).

**★★★★★ — Patrick Cannon, Dec. 2016**

> I confess to a personal relationship with James Caulfield. We have collaborated on five books on Chicago area architects and architecture. The latest, The Space Within: Inside Great Chicago Buildings, was awarded the Gold Medal for architecture books in the 2016 Independent Publishers Book Awards, largely due to the excellence of the 360 images it includes. To me, he is the finest architectural photographer working in Chicago today. No one has documented more landmark buildings. In every case, he takes whatever time is necessary to honor the architect's intentions. He will give any client the same award winning quality.

**★★★★★ — William Tyre, Dec. 2016**

> I cannot provide enough praise for Jim Caulfield! Glessner House Museum has utilized his services on several occasions to photograph both the interior and exterior of the building. The interior presents some interesting lighting challenges, but Jim's images always capture the spaces in their best light, with crystal clear details and the exact feel that the Glessners sought to create when designing and furnishing their home. (And he even adds fire in the fireplaces!) We were especially pleased with Jim's images of the house which appeared in the recently published book The Space Within. We also used his image of the main hall for our annual Christmas cards in 2011, which were most popular!
