He was easy to work with and took the time to understand what we were looking for. We ended up with a design plan and materials we were happy with. Tim and his team delivered exactly what we wanted. The quality of the construction is excellent. The team is comprised of craftsmen and carpenters that pay attention to detail. Crew members were friendly and very professional at all times. Tim, one of the owners, was very helpful explaining all the options and processes for reconstructing our decks. He met with us on several occasions to go over the proposal and pick out the products we ultimately decided on. There's a lot of Trex product combinations to choose from. We were looking for a contractor to "fix" the deck on our 8 year old home. The deck had been constructed in 2 sections, one section a step lower that the first which was a chronic tripping problem. The wood on the deck floor was deteriorating and would not hold stain or paint. We had 3 contractor give us an estimate. Two of the contractors wanted to build another deck on top of the existing structure. After talking to Ralph and Tim, they advised us not to add more structure to the deck. They also advised us that it would be more practical and not that much more expensive to completely replace the deck. We are so glad we listened to their advise. During removal of the old deck it was discovered that the original deck had not be installed properly and water had rotted the ledger board which attached the deck to the house. We can't even imagine what may have happened if we had simply put another deck over the original and it broke away from the house and crashed to the ground from the second level of our house. > > The end product is safe and beautiful. The project was completed on time and Ralph and Tim were experienced, knowledgeable and great to work with. While not the lowest bidder (which we tend to avoid for obvious reasons), we went with Artisan for their willingness to work with us and be flexible, along with being extremely helpful in helping us gain a better understanding of the Trex product. > > During the project their work team varied based on the weather, what work was needed here and on occasion what assistance was needed on other projects. Throughout the project Ralph, Tim and their team readily answered questions we raised, were responsive to our concerns, and helped us find the best approach for some specific concerns. At the end of the project we were very satisfied with the work Artisan had done. When afterwards we found a few teaks we wanted to make they came back, discussed the options and then made the small changes we were looking for. A: All of the material is from Trex. The field boards are Tiki Torch and the picture frame is Lava Rock. The railing posts are Vintage Lantern and the railing sections are just black aluminum railing from Trex. Hope this helps! **Q: Would you prefer a gas or charcoal grill in an outdoor kitchen?** *(in Polls)* Coyote Outdoor Living offers grills that feature propane hookups, charcoal, or a mixture of both in our 50" Hybrid grill. What option would most appeal to you when designing an outdoor kitchen? A: I think a gas grill will be much easier to maintain for you, and there is less risk of damage to whatever surface you have outside from a charcoal briquette falling out. We've seen charcoal do some serious damage to decks and even start fires. However, there is less that can go wrong with a charcoal grill, being that there are no real "working parts" like on a gas grill. That being said, invest some money in a good quality gas grill and I think you will be pleased with how convenient it is to cook with. **Q: Veka deck vs Azek vs Wood** *(in Other)* What to go with for St. Louis weather, with full sun area??? Cedar with maintenance free railing? Azek? Veka? One salesman told me, Veka is the best. as it does not absorb water and not slippery. If the option is non-wood deck, what is your preference? Veka or Azek? Anyone has experience with the products? thank you ! A: I used to live in Kansas City so I have a pretty good idea of the weather you will be facing. Veka and Azek are both great brands. Neither of them will absorb water, making it impervious to mold, rot and insects. I definitely wouldn't suggest a cedar deck in St. Louis, unless the deck was somehow shaded. And with all the maintenance that comes with cedar, you either spend a week every 2 years sanding and staining, or you neglect it. I would suggest Azek personally, and if you are interested in a composite deck made of recycled material, I would go with Trex. Both Trex and Azek have very excellent warranties and will make you want to spend more time in your backyard.
