I want to remove the laminate and the old hardwood floor and replace the old hardwood floor with ne prefinished harwood. The trouble is all the door jams were cut to accomidate the laminate. So I am wondering if I can use the old laminate between the sub floor and the new hard wood to bring the height back to the same level. A: You can technically use the old laminate to build up the height, but it’s not the best solution. Laminate isn’t designed to act as an underlayment—it can flex, trap moisture, and cause issues with the new hardwood over time. A better approach is to use plywood or proper underlayment panels to build up the floor height.
