## Community Q&A

**Q: Kitchen renovation costs - need help with estimate?** *(in Kitchens)*

I have an estimate of $85,000 to renovate my small kitchen. This does NOT include appliances or flooring - but does include removing a load-bearing wall and replacing with an exposed wood beam. Still, this seems very high to me. I'd love some help on how to accurately gauge costs. Thank you!!

A: This was one of my remodeling projects in 2019 in Cary, NC. There was a support column and wall between the kitchen and the great room. You can see that in the first and second photo. In the next two you can see a new beam installed. The last two show the open kitchen. I provided the cabinets and countertops and my contractor did the rest. The budget was $60K, not including appliances, sink, lights, hardware and flooring. If you consider everything, it was probably close to $80K. We had the structural engineer assess the situation, we pulled permits and all sub contractors on the job were licensed. Cabinets were from Fieldstone and Countertop was Et. Staturio Suede finish. Island posts were from Timberwolf. I advised the customer on the pendant lighting and she picked out the backsplash which is hand painted tiles from France. Hope this helps.

**Q: Open Concept Kitchen or go back to Closed Kitchen?** *(in Building a Home)*

I like open concept kitchens because they are more interactive with children and guests, even pets. But they are prone to cross contimation of food and recirculation of germs.
I also like closed kitchens where there is more wall space for cabinets, but tend to get clostrophobic in smaller kitchens. What are the pros and cons people are experiencing between the open concept or closed kitchens? What do you prefer and why?

A: @tangerinedoor

"Whether it's an open concept or closed concept the issues remain the same." I mention this in my clarification.

CDC has articles on Food, Air and Water borne illnesses. My intention here is not to scare people, but be mindful of the basics of hygiene while designing kitchens. For your reading, below are links,

Foodborne illnesses
https://www.cdc.gov/foodsafety/cdc-and-food-safety.html\#:~:text=Foodborne%20illness%20is%20a%20common,than%20%2415.6%20billion%20each%20year.

Indoor Air Pollutants and Toxic Materials
https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/publications/books/housing/cha05.htm

Especially read the 'formaldehyde' part of this article. The MDF board in painted white shaker cabinets, that everyone wants in their kitchens, has traces of formaldehyde.

You can look up "preventing water borne germs at home" on the CDC website.

**Q: Eclipse Full Access of Diamond Full Access Cabinetry?** *(in Kitchens)*

Hi All,
I found out that there are shops nearby our area who offer these brands of cabinets locally. Which one is better for frameless cabinets?
Eclipse Full Access or Diamond Full Access?
Appreciate your help!

**Q: Any way to open up kitchen?** *(in Remodeling)*

When you go up the stairs from the entrance, the kitchen is directly in front. Looking to see is there is a way to open up the kitchen. Would it be strange to have the island outside a bedroom?

A: I have a kitchen exactly like this one. The DW opens behind me and I have often tripped over it not realizing that the door drops open unexpectedly. I am getting used to looking down before I turn to reach the stove.
I've attached a draft of a galley kitchen with a small island. The fridge is across the island between the door and the window.

**Q: Bertch, Kraftmaid, Diamond Distinction, or Woodland Kitchen Cabinets** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi there! Trying to decide between cabinets lines. Originally I went to a kitchen person that sells Waypoint, Wolf Designer and Bertch. I was ready to buy Bertch but wanted to see an easy reach type cabinet that was not in her showroom. I was always skeptical of an easy reach with a 12" and 15" door. On my quest to find this easy reach upper to "feel" how it opens, I visited a few other cabinet showrooms. In the end, I was concerned I was paying too much for a decent cabinet and maybe there was better in my price range. Specifically, guy in Woodland showroom said Woodland was much better than Bertch and he could probably get me into woodland for "around the same price". Not sure what to make of it. Guy at Diamond place was great and really took time to explain the line to me. He also sells lower brand of Diamond, Wolf, and Aristokraft.

I also am getting mixed messages on MDF versus maple or birch. We are doing painted shaker style cabinets.

All prices are including tax and delivery. All have added cutlery drawer divider but nothing else extra yet. One difference in layout is that Bertch and Woodland said they can do a custom size easy reach and they are priced that including that. Kraftmaid and Diamond said they cannot, so it's 12" each side. Therefore, my two cabinets flanking the windows will each be 3" smaller and more room around the window.

Please provide input if you have any experience with these lines. Thank you in advance!

Quote 1: Bertch Paint in Birch Wood Doors - $18,700 to uprade to all plywood boxes another $1000 but she says not needed
Quote 2: Woodland Paint, 1 piece solid MDF Door door $18,000 (not sure if these are all plywood)
Quote 3: Kraftmaid Paint on Maple Door - $14,000 (all plywood included)
Quote 4: Diamond Distinction at an ID dealer $14,380 (all plywood included)

Design in Bertch:

Plan for Diamond or KM without custom sized easy reach:

A: The Bertch cabinets are the most expensive. All fieldstone dealers will not give you the same quote, it just depends upon their Design abilities and how much discount they are able to offer. I just ordered a kitchen for a customer in Columbus, Ohio and I live in NC. I coordinated the design on WhatsApp video call. They have their own contractor and are purchasing countertops there. I didn't order the cabinets until it was verified and approved by the contractor and my customer. When their cabinets are delivered, I will coordinate installation by video.

**Q: 122” x 68” x 2” island in concrete?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Should we do it?
ALso- the craftsman wants to make it in his shop and then charge us for install. The estimated price (without install) is $7500.00.

That seems expensive and why not pour in place? He says he can manage conditions better in his shop, but this is a huge island. It seems like the installation is going to be extremely difficult.

Would you just go with a Silestone product but that requires a seam because it is so big?

help!!!!

A: @morganannika

Concrete countertops are messy to pour in place and very heavy to transport if poured elsewhere.
Have you considered an inlay pattern with multiple quartz colors to overcome the seam issue? Take a look at some Airport floors where two or more colors are separated with a wave.
