As you can see, I still need to put in a backsplash. The kitchen has 64 square feet of space for the backsplash. The kitchen is also fairly dark. I was considering glass tile as I think it may brighten up the space. There is a lot of wood in the kitchen i.e., the cabinets and floor. Any ideas for colors/type of backsplash. Thanks! Here's the old before pic A: There are so many options for backsplash! Things to consider: with a glass tile it will reflect any undercabinet lighting (if any). With the traditional colour and finishes I would recommend an oversized subway tile (3x10, 4x12 or 3x16) in a matte finish. The less reflective surfaces gives a calmer, quieter feel. An off white or cream will keep your space brighter. To increase value to yur investment consider upgrading your lighting as well to help reduce dark corners. It will feel like a whole new room! **Q: Ideas on opening up Kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* My wife and I are purchasing our first home, and it is definitely in need of some updates. I'm not experienced in remodeling, and would love some advice from the folks here on Houzz that are more knowledgable than I am! One of the first things we are hoping to tackle is a kitchen remodel. I would like to see if there is a good way to open up the kitchen more by taking out a large closet/walls that separate the kitchen from the family room. If the entire wall behind the refrigerator is removed, maybe we can extend the countertops through where the refrigerator is currently and have a nice open view in to the living room. I'd love to hear from more experienced people about whether this sounds like it could work, or whether it would be worth doing (in terms of potential cost/value added to the house). Thanks for reading and for your advice! A: I would definitely remove the closet and wall between the kitchen/living room. However, if you place the fridge on the left side of the sink it becomes very visible from the living room. I would move the range (to the left of the window) and put a more decorative hood above (as a nicer focal point or feature) and move the sink into an island increasing your prep space. Fridge would then move into the corner along the space wall where the range is currently (or put a pantry beside then fridge). The room has good size but poor layout cramming the range and fridge in that small corner. Before removing any walls you certainly need to make sure there in not a load-bearing factor. Hope that helps! **Q: filler pieces ???** *(in Photo Questions)* What a beautiful design, but I am curious why the wide filler pieces beneath the cooktop, I am redesigning myself and am planning on a 36W cook top, are the fillers because of the depth of the cooktop?? Thanks A: They are not fillers but a solid plain front column. Matches the ones on each end of the island **Q: what are the room dimensions & width of floor between shower & sink?** *(in Photo Questions)* Where is the toilet in this bathroom? Does the shower door open out toward the sink? A: The toilet is beside the shower (or from the perspective of the photo to your right. The bathroom is 90" x 96". the space between the shower and the vanity is 36" and the shower door swings in both directions. We didn't have a lot of space so the layout maximizes every inch. **Q: Need help planning my new kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am building a new home, and have the basic layout, but I need help deciding how to build my breakfast bar. Right now, I have it partially raised with no overhang on the family room side through the corner side area, then not raised, with a 12 inch overhang on the dining room side. My current home has a bar with the sink in it and it is not raised. Guests definitely love the convenience of sitting at the lower bar, but I've been told the raised bar will hide kitchen mess better. This is a lake home with a very open feel; I'm worried the partially raised bar will make the kitchen more closed off, as well as limit serving space. I also need help with placement of my 2nd sink and appliances. A: Hi again Rhonda, Glad to hear you have booked an appointment with a kitchen designer. Just a couple of things you might want to consider: I personally don't feel you need to scrap the whole current design. Yes, it does need some significant modifications it does have a good feel by creating a separation from guests. I also suggest NOT scrapping the island. Even if the cooktop does not go there it is a great place for a small prep sink, landing area for the ovens and refrigerator. To maximize the space you could cheat the main run and push into the room adjoining to the right (12" or so). Giving you better a little more movement around. Open concept homes can be a challenge but with a good designer you will be able to create the right look for you home without sacrificing functionality or esthetics.
