Second floor as well as the staircase is going to be dark hardwood, more like black, (pictures attached). Main floor, open concept, 1,800 square feet is porcelain tile 24x24 with rectified edge. Tile is a nice contrast to the stairs and dark hardwood upstairs. Do you think entire floor of tile is too much. Should I go with dark hardwood on main floor as well or should I stick with tile? The space on main floor is so open that I can't combine tile and hardwood on one floor. I have attached pictures of tile and hardwood, as well as main floor. I question whether having 1,800 square feet of tile in main floor (kitchen, dining room and living room) is the right choice. It's a modern home. A: Very dark wood will require more upkeep than the light porcelain. **Q: Which one?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Leather or Fabric? We have animals too so I'm just not sure.. A: If you have animals go with leather - will not absorb orders as easily! **Q: What will make my bathroom look better?** *(in Design Dilemma)* We remodeled our master bath a couple of years ago. My husband did all the work. He designed and built the cabinets and did all the tile work. It was a his and hers with closets at a 45 degree angle in each corner. He ripped out the closets and made the "his" side a big walk-in closet. We replaced the garden tub with a whirlpool tub that is too big. He decided to put in sconces instead of vanity lights and frameless mirrors. I put the decals over the mirrors because it just seemed blah to me. We made a lot of design mistakes. I wish I could do it over, but that's not an option. What can I do to warm it up and make it look cozier? A darker paint color, maybe? A: Try framing the mirrors -there is a website that offers just that, or you could add moulding yourself . Frankly I would paint the room a contrasting color on the "cool" side. Possibly a shade of green. Warm colors seldom look good with mid tone wood. Side lights are the preferred light for actually seeing you face as the do not cast the shadows. **Q: Will this look dated in a couple of years?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi, I am re-doing my kitchen and master bathroom. I have always renovated just before selling and so have never had the opportunity to live in a "finished" house. I want to do this reno in my forever house and enjoy living in it, but I don't want to have to redo the kitchen and bath again when I move out. I plan on doing a white kitchen and bath, with marble counters. Very classic and I'm hoping timeless features. I've picked a backsplash for the kitchen and I thought I'd use the same thing for the shower, but now I'm worried that it might look dated in a few years. Thoughts? A: Like Main Line - my opinion - but never do marble in the kitchen - it's not so much the staining but the etching from hard water and anything the least bit acidic - if you just love marble - go with a "honed" finish - it's more forgiving. Glass tile - I don't know I've done it for clients and they love it - especially for a transitional look. Subway tile has been around forever - so it can't be dated. Trends come and go - do whatever you like - that's always my advice. And as Main Line pointed out - a kitchen backsplash is easy to replace.
