You're distrupting the flow of the room, and breaking up the open floor plan concept. ELIMINATE THE RUG! You don't have to have a rug in the dining area. The space does need some work, however. Select a more dramatic chandelier, and place a stunning and sophisticated accessory as a centerpiece. **Q: Bookshelf nightmare!** *(in Design Dilemma)* This built in was here when we bought the house years ago. It's a 1950 home that we are trying to redo with a midcentury feel. To remove would create ceiling and floor issues. Any ideas for gutting the shelving and painting or is removal my best option? This is our tiny master, (5'x8') and we are thinking tub/shower combo. We like blue, white, gray and wood (walnut/teak) for our color palette. Thinking about a wood vanity, and maybe an accent tile wall; rain shower and hand held for the shower fixtures. Also a pocket door since the door takes up so much space. Any suggestions what to do? We are also leaning towards a half glass. We currently use this bathroom for our 7-month-old, but will be redoing the hallway bathroom for him (will post that design dilemma soon). Since you'll have a tub in the second bathroom, may I suggest a shower with frameless glass enclosure. Go monochromatic in a light color... off white, beige, pale coral - colors that complement skin tones. Avoid blue, green, and yellow. Use textures to create interest by using textured paints, tiles, or wallpaper. Think about mirroring a wall or partial wall. My favorite treatment is to use a recessed mirrored medicine cabinet with a mirrored surround. **Q: Help me pick chairs and new lights for my kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi! We’re in the market for new seating and new lights in our kitchen. While the previous owners did a nice job remodeling the kitchen, it’s not really our style. We’re not planning to replace any of the bones of the kitchen because everything is nice quality and in good shape (except the lights), but would love ideas for how to make the space feel a little less traditional. We’ve struggled a little bit with the table area because it’s relatively small and we’re a family of 5, so we need plenty of seating. We had a larger table in here that we’ve relocated to our dining room because it felt like we were always banging the chairs into the wall, tripping over the chairs, or unable to access the pantry when someone was seated at the table. We love this vintage table and feel like it fits the space better, but it’s still tight. The table is 40” wide x 60” long and when it’s centered under the current light, we only have 25” between the edge of the table and the wall. We thought we might be able to save some space by placing bench seating against the wall and chairs on the ends/other side of the table, but we’re having trouble finding something we like and pulling it together. We want to stay away from anything upholstered since we have three kids 6 and under, but leather would be ok. I found this one from pier 1 and thought it might work, depending on what the color really looks like. We’ve been looking at black chairs to tie in with the island, but I’m afraid it might feel too dark. I tend to like things a little lighter and brighter. We both like the crate and barrel chair, but would need to test it out because the reviews say it isn’t very comfortable. Any suggestions? Is it possible to seat 5-6 comfortably in this area??? We also need a new light fixture over the table. I like the idea of a rectangular drum light, but we’ve used a drum light in our dining room and foyer, so I’m afraid it might be a little boring. The other thing we considered since the area is small is replacing the light over the table with recessed light. Any other suggestion? Thanks in advance for your help! A: I'm working on a project with the same traffic flow issue. The door to the outside makes a traditional dining arrangement difficult. I resolved the situation by placing a bench against the wall, and 2 dining chairs on the opposite side that would slide under the table. I purchased 2 more dining chairs, one used as a desk chair and the other as a pull up in the living room that can easily be placed at the ends of the dining table when extra seating is needed. This way, the pathway to the outside isn't blocked. A glass extension table gives you even more space options. **Q: Accent wall colour** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are thinking about painting our fireplace/tv wall an accent colour and I don't k ow where to start. Our couch is a very light grey, two occasional chairs are teal. We have this quirky painting that with lots of colours. Our drapery and rug are black and white. Please help!! A: How about a dark GRAY? Gray goes beautifully with black and white, and won't distract from your TV. A bright or strong color will interfere with visual enjoyment. What I'd love to see is a two tone effect: a darker color on the inset portion of the wall, and a slightly lighter shade on the 'frame'.
