About the Company: Modelhom (formally Model Home Furnishings) began in September of 2002, when the housing market began its historical rise. With help from good friends, as well as an effective business model and hard work, MHF was off and running. A year later, we knew we had a viable business and committed to a small building in Nipomo, CA. In 2004, we incorporated and while we continued to work with builders and designers, our direct residential business was thriving and we quickly outgrew our space. In 2005, we moved to a much larger space in Grover Beach, CA where we reside today. Over the next decade, the business evolved as we took cues from our clients and added more modern furniture lines. In 2013, Model Home Furnishings was rebranded into what is now Modelhom. About the Founders James and Karen Deering never thought they would be running a business together but with her love of design and his business acumen, it all made sense. They began their journey as Arroyo Grande High School sweethearts and both attended Cal Poly, him for business and her for interior design. Karen always had good taste and design sense and James loved the idea of running his own business. Who knew ten years later they would be launching a business together? After raising three kids, James still finds time to surf, play tennis and drum while Karen enjoys spending time with good friends and family and the occasional massage or spa day. They both have a strong faith in God and believe He continues to direct their journey. We paid for Karen's services to measure and design our space. April came and went and in July/August our furniture began trickling in. Karen did loan us two sofas so we had something to sit on during the long wait. It was appreciated. > The trouble began when a very large sofa and ottoman for our upstairs family room arrived and the delivery guys were not able to get it up the stairs. When the delivery guys contacted Karen about the problem, she said “Oh well, they will have to pay to have it moved using a crane at an additional cost of 800-900 dollars". We asked if we could get a smaller sofa given she had the measurements and she told us how much more it would cost to change the sofa. In an effort to “cut our losses” we agreed to have her delivery guys winch the new sofa up the side of our home onto an outside deck and into the family room through a sliding glass door. After several days and a big headache, and an additional $350 we had the sofa winched up the side of our house. This was a circus. > Two living room chairs were delivered and had so much of a chemical off-gassing odor that we had to keep the chairs in the garage for several weeks before we could even begin to use them. When I asked about this, Karen said “It is common and just the way it is with new furniture”. These chairs still have an odor that I mask by tucking in small sachets of lavender behind the cushions. Frustrating that the attitude toward it was so cavalier. We paid at least three separate delivery fees each time something would arrive at ModelHom These charges were non-negotiable and only after some pressure did we get a $50 discount for the sofa that did not fit. A few more issues came to light. > We noticed the front legs of the leather sofa were tilted at an angle. We took a closer look and discovered the frame had been broken, the legs installed incorrectly and a small cut on the leather from unpacking and delivery. The broken sofa began the journey of 8 weeks of waiting for a response from the manufacturer, and ModelHom to communicate with us about the process. After several months, we were able to get the sofa repaired and returned to us. > Finally, the bench was not right in our dining room. Too large, high and obstructed our windows and overwhelmed the room. Before removing the tags, I asked Karen to consider selling it from her showroom. Karen would not consider it. Instead, she said she and her team thought it "looked great" and tried to sell me a rug to enhance the space. Finally, we are saddened to say that after spending many thousands of dollars with ModelHom over the years, we cannot recommend them. Karen literally said “She didn’t know what else she could have done”.
