There were several areas where Joe and his team stood out. First, at the beginning of our project (which was a kitchen redesign and additional structural/cosmetic changes to our main floor), Joe was a voice of reason and realism. As we first contemplated this project, our sense of cost was not realistic. Joe provided us with an initial design and estimate, which immediately level set our expectations. Helping us develop our final design and budget, he outlined and detailed key tradeoffs we could make to best normalize our cost to the target range. Second, Joe worked closely with us to develop the work schedule with goal of minimizing disruption to our daily lives. His team stuck to that schedule and Joe met with us regularly (multiple times a week) to provide updates, ask clarifying questions, and talk about any issues that might have cropped up. We had a few minor issues emerge when his team started to break down our original kitchen that were ... unexpected. Joe and his team dealt with these hurdles pragmatically, detailing some alternative solutions and work arounds that fit our budget. Third, during our selection of appliances, fixtures, tile, flooring, countertop, cabinets, and other key decisions, Joe was very hands-on and came with us to make final design choices. What we most appreciated was his objectivity around these discussions, never pushing us to his choice but informing us to make the decision that was best for us. Fourth, Joe and his team (including subcontractors) performed exceptionally. It was very high quality work and his subcontractors interacted seamlessly throughout the process. Fifth, the work done our house was completed ahead of schedule and we could not be happier with the results. I've built custom built-ins, installed French doors, added shear walls, hung and finished drywall, rebuilt a master bath from studs up, etc. I take my time to ensure every project is done well and I pay attention to detail. Because 2-1/2 baths would be taken offline at the same time and there was a firm six-week window to complete the project within (planned summer vacation for the wife and kids). He took his time to understand what I wanted out of the project and to find a way to separate the project into two stages--1) completing the 1st floor kitchen eat-in area and guest bath within the six week window and 2) setting the stage for DIY completion of a full bath and wet bar in the finished basement. Since the first floor and basement baths would share drain pipes and venting, quite a bit of planning would be required. > > During a couple of in-house design sessions, Joe’s architect listened to my wife and I describe what we'd like (often different opinions), find solutions we could both agree on and quickly sketch out the planned result. With e-mail follow-ups, we were able to lock in a detailed design for the 1st floor kitchen/bath as well as a floor plan for the basement. Now having the benefit of hindsight, I must say I'm impressed with their ability to create a floor plan that flows well and makes the space feel larger than it is. > > With the design complete, Joe developed and executed a detailed project schedule with extreme attention to detail. Challenges were dealt with swiftly, without complaint and without additional cost. Even the traditional mess was kept mostly at bay due to a couple of contractor-sponsored maid visits and routine cleaning by the crew. We knew our work would require some creative thinking about design and wanted guidance instead of someone who would just do whatever we wanted (we knew what we wanted but weren’t sure the best way to get there). We had interviewed three architects in the high, medium and low price range and weren't particularly impressed with any of them. We found Joe and Construction Solutions through a strong recommendation from our neighbor who had a tree fall through her house. When we talked with Joe by phone, he rightly said he'd come for a consultation with an architect he often partnered with (Michael Griegg, 3GArchitects - a highly skilled architect). Upon meeting them, we could tell they were the type of high caliber, creative, budget-minded partners we were looking for.
