## Community Q&A

**Q: Is this grout messed up?** *(in Kitchens)*

Just had tile done. They used Mapei Flexcolor CQ with 1/16" grout lines. They are coming back next week because along one wall they used grout instead of caulk where the granite and tile meet. I notice a couple of grout lines look like this...

A: @Stephanie Woodley since its flex color grout i believe you can just add a touch of it up there and wipe it off easily or scrape it out and quick re pack it. If it happens again then its possible its a movement issue thats causing a crack in the grout.

**Q: Edging on tiling job.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi All, I am recent home owner. Before we made our move, we got our bathroom redone. However we noticed a less than stellar job on the edging where the tile meets the drywall. 

The first photo shows the transition. As you can see not great. There’s that wood trim in the middle that he tapered down to the edge. The second photo shows the tile side. 

We are in the process of repainting the bathroom and want to keep the same color on the bottom vertical running siding. Any ideas on how to make this look more aesthetically appealing?

A: I agree with Emily. Sanded Caulking is pretty straight forward and forgiving. just make sure you use paintable caulk and not non paintable pure silicone as there is a large learning curve between the two.
You could always remove and replace that top wood piece, cut it to length and then put a small return on the corner to complete it and that would look way better if it really bugs you.

**Q: How to finish firepit** *(in Paint)*

We built a small firepit in our yard. We’re not sure how to finish it. Mortar, Stucco, or Paint. What would look best?

**Q: Botched shower tile job?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi,
I am building a house and in the finishing phase.  I just had a mishap with the shower where the tile was laid in the wrong direction. It is our word against theirs so they aren't going to pay to redo it.  Other than that, I have received comments based on pictures of the job in progress, that the job was done poorly so far. Can anyone second that? I'd like some leverage to have the builder redo the tile on their dime partially.  You can see on the left side of the shower that it isn't level.  if a wall of tile is added would that be hidden or is it obviously done poorly?

A: Your not SOL. Some things should of been written out and signed off on like the direction of tile to be installed and things like that. But no tile contractor can come in and not make an attempt at waterproofing your shower before tiling it. Period. Just regular cement board is not waterproof. He may have a pan liner behind the backerboard and that's why its kicked out more on the bottom. A lot of questions but you need to find out how its waterproofed.

**Q: small shower tile** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are renovating our small master bath. The most we can squeeze out for the shower is 30” x 60”. Builder suggests the variety of tile sizes in this picture (we’ve already purchased some ). My concern is that it may be too busy, despite the fact that it’s the same palette. Thoughts?

A: I don't mind the same color if you can find a good balance with the sizes. And I agree your tiles have a lot going on with them. Good luck!

**Q: Water flowing to floor with curbless shower** *(in Remodeling)*

I just had a curb less shower installed without door as part of my small bathroom remodel  so it would be wheelchair accessible for my mother. When I turned the shower on it started running out into the main part of the bathroom. The shower has a slight graded slope. It's just not enough. I cannot have a door because I would not be able to get my mother to the toilet in a wheelchair. I have been told there is some kind of water barrier strip that can be installed but cannot find any info on it. Does anyone know anything about this? I am heartsick about this situation. At this point my bathroom has had many delays related to builder errors and builder being sent to multiple projects instead of finishing one project before starting another. Thank you
