I had an idea of what I wanted in my new kitchen and they worked with and gave me input on how it could be done. I ended up with custom built cabinets with all the storage space that I had asked for. I am happy with the granite counter tops and tile floor. The kitchen was completed on time and within the budget that was agreed upon. We were so happy with the quality of the work that we had them re-roof our house a year later. We got a bad batch of poly and Sherwin Williams (Minwax) is covering the cost. We originally had 3 coats of water based poly. When they re-do the floors I am going to ask them to use their most durables finish. I'm just not sure what that is. Are there better coatings out there than the basic water based poly? Are there different levels of quality? A: .Minwax owns Duraseal, Duraseal is easier to apply so we ususally use it unless we can't get it, I cannot say that (if done properly) there has been much difference other than the ease of applying duraseal (and you can thank the EPA for these finishes becoming harder to apply over the years...and more expensive). I'm 60, over the years I really don't recall much of a difference other than that. I did talk to their chemistry department years and years ago,..(to find out the difference between their duraseal vs. minwax), after that call I realized that in the end, there was probably a minimal difference ..other than duraseal is much easier to use. As far as duraseal being a lot more expensive than minwax ...My cost on Duraseal is really not much more than minwax (actually, I haven't used minwax for a long time,..so I cannot say that is still the case today). Waterborne finishes are quite expensive, and in my opinion,..not better in most cases. They rarely yellow much, if at all. The only times we have gone with waterborne is because the wood is bleached, whitewashed, or otherwise very light and we do not want to darken or amber it with an oil based finish. If you really want to go with the best finish,. have them use a conversion varnish,..Sherwin Williams makes conversion varnish, but I highly doubt they make one suitable for floors. You will most probably have to go with "Glitsa" if you want conversion varnish. If your flooring guy is not aware of Glitsa, he is NOT a seasoned professional. To me it smells a bit like lacquer. Conversion varnish is oil base,. and also has the property that it does not yellow much over time. It stays looking the same (more than other oil based finishes). If they use glitsa in your house, they will probably want you to to stay at your mother-in-laws for a day or two. So be forewarned. **Q: denatured acohol/polyurethane** *(in Woodworking)* Will denatured alcohol affect the oil based poly on my floors? I am trying to remove the shellac finish from a fireplace mantle (after having used a heat gun to remove layers of paint). I still have some latex paint on the wood next to the floors that needs to come off. I do not want to use the heat gun or strippers that will hurt the poly on the floors. We are intending to stain and use a satin poly on the mantle. Please also advise of possible "potholes" to watch out for. Thanks. A: I normally don't comment, but read this a feel I must. The majority of WATERBORNE finishes and denatured alcohol , shellac thinner, everclear, etc., DO NOT PLAY WELL TOGETHER. A way to test is to throw a "soaked with denatured alcohol" on a waterborne polyurethane floor. UNFORTUNATELY,..it will probably melt itself into the floor. I wish it was different, but it's not. This is generally not true for waterborne epoxy finishes,. But is true for most single stage waterborne finishes. For oil based polyurethane, I don't ever recall having a problem using denatured alcohol or "goof off" from home depot...to remove latex paint spots. --- *Source: Houzz professional profile.
