We strive to find a balance between the home, the surrounding landscape, and the lifestyle and desires of our clients. Our goal is to design homes that exceed your expectations. A balance between dramatic shapes and engineering practicality; between precision detailing and easy maintenance. In the Hamptons, the focus is often on finding the best ways to bring the impact of our breathtaking outdoor environments inside the home.

The exterior design of the home is meant to be a reflection of, and integrated with, the landscape. The interior design is based on the needs and preferences of the occupants, and an appreciation of the opportunities offered by the building site.

For example, we focus waterfront buildings on the views, trying to take full advantage of the light, the air, and the clouds over the water. We use private decks overlooking the ocean, vast expanses of windows to capture the daily changes in the light, and walkways and steps to protect the dunes.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss your individual needs and design a home to exceed your expectations.

**★★★★★ — prochner, Nov. 2019**

> We started with a piece of virgin property in 2015 on the water in Southampton. It was a thick weedy forest with a failing bulkhead. Mark has a vision and a plan to get from “forest” to beautiful home. There were many jurisdictional issues with the DEC, Army Corps, Town Conservation Board, etc which Mark handled in a logical and professional manner. The design process was an amazing experience where Mark took our list of must haves and transformed them into an amazing, beautiful and functional house and outdoor entertainment area including a pool, hot tub, outdoor fireplace/TV and cabana. The design included an “upside down” house with 20 ft vaulted ceilings with beadboard on the 2nd floor ceiling. Two 16 ft sliders open to a 2nd floor outdoor deck with amazing views on 3 of the 4 sides of the house. Mark solicited bids from top notch contractors where we engaged in discussions to get the best value for each dollar spent. Mark met with us on site every weekend with the contractor to discuss progress, next steps and help answer any questions that the contractor may have had. Overall, this project was an amazing experience and we are incredibly happy with the end product. Mark’s involvement through all phases transformed a traditionally stressful process into the great experience. Mark is highly recommended for anyone looking for an amazing home design.

> Mark was highly recommended to us by a local building professional. He said Mark was well respected among builders. We are sincerely grateful because we couldn't have found a better match. Mark understood the problems of adding onto a very old house, the difficulties of building close to water plus having a vision to build an elegant addition that complimented the old. He closely oversaw the entire building process, often coming daily and carefully explained to us every step and process, which can be quite bewildering to a homeowner. Ours is a small project, but to us it was huge, and we are grateful that Mark treated it as such. Thank you. We love the results.

> Mark was out architect for a complete house renovation. He is tremendously talented architect who showed us possibilities we could not have imagined. He was there along side of us from start to finish and always available. I honestly don't think the project would have gotten done with another architect. He is pragmatic yet visionary and also a true gentleman. I highly recommend Mark.

> We are General Contractors (Peter Creegan Limited) based in Amagansett, Ny. I have worked with Mark Matthews on many projects, the first one in 1984. We have built approximately 20 of Mark's beautiful houses and projects for wonderful clients, whom Mark seems to always attract. The projects were of various scope and size, and encompassed 40 million dollars of work. His talent and professionalism have made the projects a joy to be involved in as contractor, and a pleasure for the clients, as they work with Mark to create their home. The end result is excellent architecture and a lovely home complimenting the East End landscape.

> Mark Matthews Architect is the most professional and efficient architect I have ever worked with! He creates spaces that delight the senses and effortlessly make you feel comfortable and at home! His use of natural light and nature is apparent throughout his designs. He incorporates nature and the landscape with great harmony. His 30 plus years experience shows when it comes to problem solving with design ideas and creating solutions to obstacles that naturally arise during the design build process. He is a great quarterback with contractors and keeps an air of calm and organization on the jobsite. He made the entire process easy ,fun and enjoyable! I have built two custom homes and am quite picky when it comes to details! He impressed me on every possible level!!

**★★★★★ — L Ferguson, May 2016**

> We have a magnificent house because of the design and construction that Mark Matthews guided, start to finish, these past three years. All our needs as clients were considered, with none too small, and the complete, ever-complex process has been a pleasure. Mark’s lifelong experience with waterfront houses and who's best to build them linked us to a stellar team of professionals.

> My husband and I trusted Mark’s judgment, his capable office and his low-key but steady drive for a beautiful and workable outcome. Infinite decisions from legions of contributors create a house. Mark understands how synergy brings out the best in everyone to make wonderful architecture happen.

> Mark served as the architect for our new build in Southampton. In addition, he ran the job with the general contractor essentially following his direction. Mark is highly experienced always finding solutions to any problems that had developed. He takes pride in his work and seeks the best possible outcome. Mark was a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend him.

> I highly recommend Mark.
