### Featured Review

**★★★★★ — Joe B, June 2024**

> I hired Kimberly after interviewing several designers I found on Houzz, Instagram, and elsewhere. She immediately impressed me as someone with a talented eye and refined tastes who was willing to go bold. I wanted someone who wasn't afraid of using color creatively rather than using the typical neutral grayed-out palettes.
>
> The project called for creating an eclectic interior with a masculine aesthetic for the first floor of my small townhouse, in an open plan. This was the first time I hired a designer so I wasn't sure what to expect. Kimberly took careful note of my requirements and got to work right away on putting together some ideas for color scheme, furniture pieces, etc.
>
> Kimberly places the highest priority on client satisfaction, and she won't quit until the client is happy. I'm a demanding client and the project had the inevitable snags in terms of approach, budget, etc. She resolved all issues with care and professionalism.
>
> Kimberly sticks to quality as much as possible, and likes to source beautiful pieces from online auctions. This is time consuming for her but she loves doing it with a passion because of what she can find. While this requires patience from a client, she managed to snag me some amazing pieces, at a good price, that look fantastic in my living space and I'm really happy with her finds--which would not have been possible just by going to the local furniture store.
>
> I have ended up with a space that I love to live in and which never fails to impress guests. I recommend Kimberly in the highest terms for a job well done.

**Comment from APT52DC:**

> Professional photos coming soon. A good challenge and quite a few great finds that fit the design brief. Maybe a few too many options and presented an expensive fabric for pillows Joe fell in love with before I realized the price was "out of budget". But found beautiful options at West Elm. Quality is always a priority for me as a designer. It is finding the high-quality "fits the budget" items that create the look--Brazilian wood dining table and chairs with white leather seat covers at auction. Thank you for the review, Joe. Ready to start upstairs when you are.

> "Magazine worthy!!!!"; "Beautiful ambiance"; "Gorgeous." These are just some of the comments I've received from guests of my AirBnB since Kimberly and I worked together. Kimberly did the design for my basement apartment renovation and was so great to work with. High attention to detail and she was able to capture my personal style in the space. Very communicative and generous with her time. I would certainly recommend her to anyone in DC looking for design services!

**★★★★★ — Juli Majernik, March 2024**

> Kimberly Humphrey of APT52DC helped me tremendously. Background: I returned to the USA after three years living abroad and my condo was a mess. I forgot what I owned and what was where exactly. I wasn't sure how to put all of my objects and belongings together. My frustration was through the roof. Solution: I used HOUZZ to search from a designer in my area and spotted Kimberly's APT52DC site showcasing interesting, bold colors, and lovely textures. Some of the items resembled things I owned or things I would buy. We connected quickly and chatted. She shared ideas and opinions, and guided key purchases and ways forward (two large area rugs, lampshades, gallery wall display, high gloss furniture painting, and wall colors). Her eye and decision support helped me to settle back into living in DC. And, my condo is looking great, of course.

**Comment from APT52DC:**

> What a pleasure to work with a well-traveled woman. Juli has an amazing art collection from her travels and her talented family artists. She loves color and natural textiles. Her style is eclectic. Many of her pieces have history and a special impact on her design brief--collected treasures, color, texture and warmth. Thank you for bringing me onboard to help you settle into DC on this move.

**★★★★★ — Liz Witherspoon, Sept. 2023**

> Kim has an amazing design eye and gift for color. She can evaluate a space and offer creative guidance on paint, furnishings, and layout. She took our open floor plan, mid-century modern home and gave structure and character to every room, top to bottom. From recommendations for unique wall color combinations that we love to unexpected uses of furniture and helpful instructions on new purchases, she was there to oversee the transformation every step of the way. Every guest compliments the end result and we have been enjoying our space tremendously. We highly recommend Kim for any design project no matter how daunting!

**Comment from APT52DC:**

> A fun young family in Bethesda, MD. Look forward to professional photo shoot soon.

**★★★★★ — Robert, Sept. 2023**

> Looking for help to decorate your living space, whether large or small? I highly recommend Kimberly for her design talents, command of colors and fabrics, access to great sites for good deals, and more. Frankly, I wasn’t really sure I really wanted to redo my digs after my wife died, but with Kimberly, it became a fun and life-affirming experience. I was particularly impressed by Kimberly’s appreciation of art and framing, which helped me showcase my wife’s works throughout my apartment, thus adding precious memories to my daily use & enjoyment. Last but not least I appreciate the way Kimberly listened to my preferences, offered expert guidance, and flexed to my needs.

**Comment from APT52DC:**

> It was a pleasure working with Robert.
> Curating Hilda’s life of artwork brought so much happiness to the design.

> Thanks to Kimberly for making my house a home.. Her hard work and many hours combined with her expertise, unique design and imaginative use of materials has elevated the style of my home.
> She is an attentive listener and takes my words and reflects them in her design. She blends old treasures with new ones to create a cohesive look and flow throughout. Her mastery of color and texture add warmth and depth. Kimberly’s designs create an element of excitement that draws people into the rooms where they want to linger awhile.

> Kimberly helped us select art for our apartment. She has a very good eye and is well connected to artists and galleries. She was extremely respectful of our taste and preferences and never pushy. She was very prompt and provided us with many options. She also introduced me to her framer and hung the art for us. She is a pleasure to work with.

**Comment from APT52DC:**

> An already beautiful art collection. Diapotpie and spouse hired me to add to their growing collection of art. Thank you! Amazing cook and person.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Size of wall art above a fireplace** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am lookiing at the same wall art but in two different sizes to go above a fireplace. I will attach a pic of the artwork plus the two different sizes (done with newspaper) attached to the wall.

A: Go big.

**Q: Recommendations where to source brass house numbers** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Im looking to replace my 6” brass house numbers.
I live in a snowy environment where the roads are salted and plowed. Because of that, i dont necessarily want to buy the cheapest ones i can find, id like some of decent quality that will last. But also have a budget of $30 or less per number
I found some at CB2, but im not familiar with their quality and i dont have a store in the area.

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

**Q: What style goes with this to make it nice?** *(in Home Decorating)*

How do I lean into this and make it nice? Point me in the right direction. What style do I aim for? All ideas welcomed. House I bought was 1960s Hollywood regency with a touch of French provincial…not really my jam but has good bones, how do I make it work today? It’s been a year and I’m in design paralysis - I can’t get started. Furniture doesn’t need to stay.

A: Art on walls…

**Q: Please help!! Front door in the middle of the living room!** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hi! Our front door is in the middle of our living room with no clear separation and I need help figuring out the best layout for the furniture. Right now this is our set up. The shelves and everything else can be moved so please feel free to design with no limitations
There are a lot of entrances so a lot of obstacles for furniture placement.

**Q: Do I need to replace countertops to brighten the look of the kitchen?** *(in Remodeling)*

Our kitchen remodel from 20+ years ago is starting to look dated. I would like to brighten/update the look and am wondering how best to do that without breaking the bank. Here are my thoughts in order of time/money commitment:

I already know that I want to paint the walls (current color is SW Sea Salt) and was thinking about a linen or white color.
Would replacing the dark granite backsplash above the sink with something lighter give the room a different look?
Could I either replace the island countertop, leaving the others the same, or leave the island as is and replace the perimeter countertops? Color/material recommendations?
Should I replace all the countertops? Color/material recommendations?

Also: If I replaced the island countertop, I was considering doing away with the table height area with the 4 chairs, and would appreciate any feedback on that.
As far as painting the cabinets goes, I really like my cherry cabinets as they are and would rather not paint them.
Thanks for any thoughts/advice.

A: paint island cabinets.
