**★★★★★ — Jeremy M, Sept. 2020**

> We were very happy with Alex and his team for our project. BSQ did the drawings for our garage, as well as the backyard design which entailed a new deck, expanded basement entrance, cabinetry, porch roof, hardscape, and planting plans. They were knowledgeable about the rules around building a garage, and took care of the permit process.
>
> Alex was very professional, responsive, and helpful throughout. I would not hesitate to recommend him to family and friends looking for the perfect balance between beautiful, thoughtful design, and practical advice with accurate architectural drawings.

**★★★★ — Doron Dekel, Sept. 2017**

> We hired bsq (Robert), on a recommendation from a friend, to design a Japanese-style garden at the front and to do a face-lift of our existing garden at the back. The front garden design was quite complex, involving a fish pond, a deck, a miniaturized hilly landscape with many different plants, stone work, and a concrete driveway with etching patterns. We are overall totally happy with the result. The front garden is uniquely beautiful, and the renovation of the back garden looks great. The contractor they brought in to do the actual work, Lawrence, was excellent - well equipped, hard working and assisted by great workers.
>
> Robert was well organized, pleasant, knowledgeable and informative. The only reason I didn't give him 5 stars is that the project was very slow to start. We missed a whole season before the design was complete and the project got underway.

**★★★★★ — Jon Saunders, Aug. 2017**

> My wife and hired bsq for our extensive landscape project that included, design plans of our front, back, and side yards, pool, cabana, pergola, and sunken patio + all plantings and we are extremely pleased with our final product. We hired Alex after an initial meeting - he's a super nice guy and was able to take our vision of a modern landscape design and make it a reality. We found Alex to be extremely accommodating, took a lot of the stress associated with such a big project and kept things moving along. He also was great at communicating with the Town for permits, engineers, and an arborist to make sure all building plans were submitted to code to ensure a smooth forward-moving project.
>
> As well, Alex has access to an extensive group of very skilled sub-contractors to complete the work who also share in his vision. He encouraged us to obtain quotes to compare to what he could get to ensure the most cost efficient project. He was on budget and time and very open to making changes on the go - we added things as we went :)
>
> We would 100% recommend Alex and bsq Landscape Architects and would use them again in the future.

**★★★★★ — annie7, June 2016**

> Bsq Landscape designed a beautiful landscape plan for our home. The driveway and front hardscape add more curb appeal than we could have imagined. Our pool and Cabana make us feel like we are at a resort. It is simple and very creative. Bsq also helped us navigate the sometimes complicated permits and Ravine Commission paperwork. We would use them again without hesitation.

**★★★★★ — Sustainable, Jan. 2016**

> As architects, SUSTAINABLE.TO worked closely with b sq. Design Studio on a laneway garage, rear yard, deck re-construction. b sq.'s professionalism and landscape design skills impressed us very much, and delivered an excellent product to the client's complete satisfaction. We look forward to working alongside b sq. on our next project!

A Japanese inspired pond feature with a small cascading water feature, surrounded by lush plantings with naturalistic oversized granite slab flagstone pavers for the walkways and seating area. New fencing was added to the side yard for more privacy, a new walkway for better access to the si…
- [Landscape Integration](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/landscape-integration-pj-vj~7335450)
  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: Quite often rear yards are often broken up into separate spaces that do not complement each other. This small urban yard was no exception and to address this bsq redesigned a smaller deck that was opened up to the rear yard. An integrated concrete seat bench added a fun element while removing the need for railings that would otherwise cut off the deck from the yard. Entertainment space was key for this family so the garden areas had to be reduced. Stainless steel cables were added as an architec…

  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: Infill Urban Homes often sacrifice yard space to increase the size of the house footprint and this property was no exception. A complete redesign of the rear deck included a pergola and screens for privacy and both a dining an cooking area while not limiting access to the basement walkout that was updated with a modern sauna with a new greenroof to soften the rear yard. A small seating rea and new privacy trees make up the balance of this rear yard while still leaving enough room for a small sto…

  - Description: Creating a contemporary garden with an existing landscape can sometimes be a challenge especially if the existing architecture and landscape features may not be as modern feeling as one might want. Deliberate materials and paving elements combined with stainless steel, glass and composite decking along with colourful planters to add that “pop” have…

  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: A rear yard that lends itself quite well to entertaining from intimate gatherings to large occasions. A covered, four seasons spa with a gas fireplace and water feature add luxury and elegance that can be enjoyed year round while the balance of this private garden was optimized for storage, dining and lounging while still maintaining a classic green and white garden vibe.
- [West End Lounge](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/west-end-lounge-pj-vj~7333304)
  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: A smaller urban lot does not leave much room for a lawn so the rear terrace needed to be both hard wearing and pet friendly while not feel too much like a lot of paving. A combination of Cedar decking and a Cedar pergola added many soft, warm accents while providing privacy and year – round seating. A small shed with an integrated green roof accommodated storage needs and a crushed granite patio provided a lower lounge area with European flair without adding what looks like a lot of paving.

Other aspects of the design included accessibility in both the front and rear gardens and to a…

  - Description: Concealed, Efficient and Secure Storage was Key for this Laneway Garage: A young family living in Leslieville needed to make the most of the limited available storage space to accommodate their active lifestyles and growing family. They needed storage and easy access for windsurfing equipment, stand-up paddleboards, bicycles and all other types of sprouting and camping equipment. Working with the client, bsq Landscape Architects developed the design to create a modern garage with a lockable, sli…
- [Swing To Spa and In Between](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/swing-to-spa-and-in-between-pj-vj~6578379)
  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 5
  - Description: This project aimed to design an expansive patio for dining and lounging while including a hot tub, decking, and a lawn for seasonal sport edged by a low maintenance garden. From setting up a winter hockey rink to enjoying the summer evenings, it was important that the water flow was well managed. To achieve this, we terraced the rear yard creating an elongated brick and stone patio with a covered dining area; used was a rough wood timber framing that supported a personal scripted swing, a covere…
- [Urban Family Hideaway](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/urban-family-hideaway-pj-vj~6578365)
  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: This project's goal was to creatively design for family lounging, urban gardening, and managing vehicular movement using architectural cues, wood and stone detailing to develop a seamless, unique layout with limited barriers. Taking advantage of mature vegetation, shade and view into the rear yard beyond the oversized sliding glass doors, we wanted to achieve a yard with limited barriers, soft edges, long vistas and a gentle transition between elevations. Stacking the two air conditioners and in…
- [South-East Inspired Retreat](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/south-east-inspired-retreat-pj-vj~6578359)
  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: Together with our client, the project goal was to creatively transform an under-utilized rear garden using architectural cues and personal detailing to develop a cohesive material enriched design with multiple focal points and uniquely placed vegetation. Taking advantage of the mature vegetation, bamboo fencing and existing hot tub, we had the opportunity to design and create integrated lounging and seating. We enhanced the garden's multiple focal points by importing hand-selected rockery, speci…
- [Contemporary Deck](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/contemporary-deck-pj-vj~6578354)
  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: With first-floor access elevated well above the finished grade, our client wanted a low-maintenance space open and close to the ground to improve privacy. They also wanted this area to include lounge seating, a fireplace and room for their favourite furry friend and low maintenance gardening. We updated the existing deck outside the first-floor access doors and constructed the new deck from the same false deck boards to ease maintenance. Connecting the decks is a well-lit set of stairs with glas…
- [Multi-Use Urban Backyard](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/multi-use-urban-backyard-pj-vj~6578342)
  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: Our clients were clear on what they sought for their backyard transformation; an outdoor space that provided multiple areas that would accommodate private get-togethers and intimate lounging while ensuring that the garden had enough vegetation and storage space for the owner's collection of bicycles. Making use of the long rear yard site lines was essential to improve social gatherings while still maintaining privacy and individual function, including BBQ and dining, lounging, spa, bike shed wit…
- [Modern Historical](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/modern-historical-pj-vj~6578331)
  - Location: Toronto, ON
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: An original Cabbagetown cottage was fully renovated and expended so that the original facade was restored but unchanged. As a result, a traditional landscape befitting of a Victorian garden streetscape was required for the front yard. Simultaneously, a modern approach was needed in the rear yard to make the most of a deep lot with a garage potentially acting as a barrier in the middle. A custom wrought iron fence and mature trees and boxwood hedging added the classical formal touches for this fr…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Fiberglass** *(in Photo Questions)*

Fiberglass pool?color and manufacturer?

A: Hi,
This was a custom formed concrete pool installed by Paradise Pools of Toronto.

**Q: What are dimensions of each pool house?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is size of each pool house?

A: Each pool house is just under 10'x10'
This allowed us to build them without requiring building permits under local zoning regulations that exempt small structures under 108 sq, feet.
One is a pool equipment and change room facility and the other was a large bar area.

**Q: Table and chairs** *(in Photo Questions)*

Where are the table and chairs from? Thanks!

A: This furniture was made by an Australian company, Harbour outdoor. This
set is called Breeze. Best way to get the pieces are to email them and
find a distributor in your location. Their website is
harbouroutdoor.com.

**Q: How much weight can this type of patio support?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi,

This patio is on grade (ground level). It is not a rooftop patio nor over a garage so it could certainly hold a lot of weight.
The metal and wood structure was designed to support region snow and wind loads to a 100 year storm event level of weight.
It could hold much more than that but there is no reason for any additional loading.

**Q: How tall is the jacuzzi?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you please tell me the dimensions of the jacuzzi.
Thank you!

A: The Jacuzzi is made of concrete and built into the end of the pool, with a width of 10'-6" and a depth of 8'-6". The Jacuzzi is raised approximately 20" above the finished grade and has a standard water, and an inside seat ledge on all four sides. Great Project and the water fall centred is the primary focal point of this rear garden.

**Q: Table and Chairs?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Where can I find this dining set?
