## Community Q&A

**Q: family photos as home decor** *(in Polls)*

Yes or no? I just moved and am struggling with where to hang framed photos of my children. Do I relegate them to the upstairs hallways where my kiddos reside? Or should they be prominently displayed throughout my home? I have several pieces of art in the main living areas so it’s not a matter of need to cover space, but my kiddos are MY greatest art. Someone commented to me recently that family photos should stay out of the main areas!

A: In general, I don't like family photographs on the wall - they're better displayed table top. The multi-window collage type of frame are the worst offenders on the wall-hung family photos. A few in nice black 8x10 frames in a hallway are fine though.

**Q: Designing a curved fireplace** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm working on a curved fireplace project as below.

I'm looking for recommendations on how to design it in natural stone and wood to give it a classic and contemporary finish that gives the space warmth.

A: Perhaps a mosaic Carrara hex for the curved top to the ceiling and Carrara slab material on the hearth - hard to work with the curve without going to a mosaic

**Q: something over fireplace?** *(in Home Decorating)*

Need help with living room. There is photography over the sofa so would I do artwork or wall art over the fireplace? I don’t want it to look too busy.

A: A large mirror or a statement piece of framed art would be lovely - A large clock can also look lovely over a mantel. :)

**Q: Help!! Bathroom sconce sizing** *(in Home Decorating)*

I'm in the middle of a bathroom reno and I'm trying to pick sconces for the sides of my medicine cabinet which will sit over a 46" vanity. The medicine cabinet is 21" wide and I have approximately 12.5" of space between the cabinet and the right side wall. The RH Sconce that I would love to put up is 7 3/4" wide. This would leave approx. 2.5" on each side of the sconce. Is this going to look too crowded? I really want this to work but also don't want it to look unproportioned!

A: Should be just fine :)

**Q: Smooth or textured ceilings?** *(in Polls)*

Would a house sell better with smooth or textured eilings? Currently have popcorn but removing and thinking aboaabout doing knockdown on ceiling and walls.

A: Smooth :)

**Q: Adding runner in kitchen.** *(in Home Decorating)*

Is it ok to put a colorful oriental runner in a black and white kitchen? It has white cabinets, black countertops, and black white and gray backsplash with SSA. I’m in love with the Karastan Spice rugs.

A: Of course :)
