"I believe everyone deserves to be surrounded by beauty; it is integral to what makes us human.”

With a Master of Architecture degree, all 3 Interior Design licensing exams, and many years' experience at large firms under my belt, my boutique firm specializes in creating homes that are both beautiful and functional. Working one-on-one with homeowners since 2004, I have realized the most important thing is to LISTEN to the client, so that I can create the perfect dream space just for them. We invest a lot in our homes, so they better meet our needs and suit our tastes.

Today, it is not the project that excites me as much as the prospective client. I look for homeowners who are enthusiastic about the work we will accomplish together. Are you our next favorite client? Send us a message now, and tell me why...!

It is the client and our potential relationship that determines our interest in a project, not the budget. The projects we undertake are not exclusively high-end, but the results are. And for instances where the scope of work is undecided, we've devised a structured in-home design consultation that can take place either in advance of or in lieu of a standard project.

> Village West is so great to work with! They are so detailed and creative. And absolutely love them.

**★★★★★ — Bob Thacher, Dec. 2021**

> Though my project was on the small scale; a kitchen refresh and concept for a future exterior facelift, I received the high-end treatment from Village West Design. Daniel provided detailed answers to all my questions and concerns, along with unique furniture and wallpaper suggestions I would never have found on my own. I especially appreciated the whole-house consultation which gave me a new perspective on my home. Daniel and his team are responsive and easy to work with.

**★★★★★ — Jim Fauntleroy, Dec. 2021**

> Daniel is fantastic, and extremely professional while also tackling projects in a fun manner as well. Daniel helped my client envision ways to create a space truly custom, catered to her particular needs. He made the process very easy.

> Daniel Smith at Village West Design took over our remodel in Novato when we were hopelessly lost and over our heads trying to be our own designer and contractor and made our new home a showplace. He had innovative ideas but also understood the science of design. I would recommend using Daniel for your home improvement and remodel plans because he is highly trained not only in the physical job of remodeling but all the psychological factors in play between the owner and contractor in successfully completing the job.

**★★★★★ — HU-674708223, Dec. 2021**

> Cannot praise Village West Design enough. They performed (excellently) what I can only describe as crisis design. We engaged Village West Design for a complete interior home remodel after we hired a contractor, who was nearly impossible to work with, and within a very compressed time frame of two months. Village West Design saved us from major remodel blunders and kept the project on track to a successful completion.

**★★★★★ — David Bamforth, Dec. 2021**

> The team at Village West Design was fantastic to work with during my apartment renovation. They quickly understood and supported my own design style while also showing me amazing options that I previously never would have considered. After living in my apartment for several months post reno, I am extremely pleased with the results and can't wait to have them tackle phase 2!

**★★★★★ — LeeAnn Shattuck, Dec. 2021**

> I hired Daniel and his team to consult with me on how to style my stairs and upstairs hallway in my Victorian farmhouse. The space is dramatic but very awkward due to every wall being a different height! Daniel gave me great advice on how to decorate the space without making it too busy or take away from the dramatic windows. I have just enough interior design training to be dangerous, but I was really stuck on what to do with this space. Daniel taught me how to look at it differently and how to think about the concept of "rhythm" in a way that I had not ever grasped before. His advice was super helpful, and now I know what direction to go with that space. I am grateful for his creativity, objectivity and helping me to gain clarity.

**★★★★★ — Renovus Custom Interiors, Dec. 2021**

> I'm a remodeling contractor who recently had the pleasure to work with Village West for the first time. From the beginning to the end of the project they were a pleasure to work with. Their level of communication and being in top of the details of a project they managed was really something else. They made my work easy. And the client we whose home we worked on couldn't say enough good about them. I would definitely jump at the opportunity to work with them in the future.

## Community Q&A

**Q: How would you furnish this huge coast living room?** *(in Home Decorating)*

I am having the hardest time deciding what furniture I should put in our large coast Living room. I was thinking 2 sectional couches?

Here are the blue prints of the living room. We have a big family and want big comfy couches. The built in tv stand stays along with the window bench. It was just rebuilt from being destroyed in Hurricane Harvey.

A: I always start from a place of functionality. What activities do you wish to accommodate? Two sectionals sound great if you plan to do a lot of entertaining or you have a large family or if you want to stretch out with lots of space. You might consider an oversize coffee table for playing games/puzzles, which many clients are taking advantage of during these times...

**Q: I need Ideas for Fireplace/TV wall** *(in Home Decorating)*

We were very limited with customizing this wall on this new home build. We knew after we closed we would do something with this wall with the TV cut out and fireplace. My initial idea was to close up the cut out add a mantle and possibly tile, rock or paint wall dark color. I also have space on either side of that that is I think about 3 to 4 feet wide. Where I can add tables and arts or add some shelving whatever I want. Give me your thoughts pleased.

A: The most important thing to think about at this stage is where you want the visual focus of the room. If there is nothing else as the focal point, and you do not plan to install a TV, then making this stand out as a prominent feature (with mantel and paint or wallpaper for texture or adding a great piece of wall art) is great. Just keep in mind that electrical code may require that the outlet maintain a cover plate for safety. Please make sure whoever does this work for you knows the local codes and keeps your home safe; you can always "hide" the plate with accessories, which we have done on many jobs.

**Q: Dining room accent wall** *(in Paint)*

I am considering adding an accent wall to my dining room (where the mirror is). It is a short term rental in San Antonio. I wouldn’t mind adding a punch of color to Represent the vibrancy of the city. The rest of the home has no accent walls.
I don’t want to go overboard. Any color suggestions?? TIA

A: I love a good accent wall. However, an important caveat is not to have too many elements competing for attention. I always say "max 3" and frankly, the archways are already at least one very prominent element--and for me they are the architectural element to celebrate. If you are going to paint the dining room, I'd recommend the whole room.

**Q: HELP! Interior Color for a Craftsman House with Wood trims?** *(in Paint)*

I have a huge dilemma. We just bought a Craftsman House and we are unsure what color paint we are going to use for the area mentioned below:

1\. In the main area of the house, we have an entrance, living room, kitchen, dining room and hallway all in the same area (there is a stairway in the center of the home).

2\. We also have a little den that has a lot of windows with a water view.

3\. Finally, a half bathroom with a washer and dryer. PS: We want to paint the shelves below the washer and dryer.

We really needs some help to find paint colors for those area, so here are a few pictures of the interior! We hate dark color unless it's for a accent wall. Otherwise we love whites, beige, but NO yellow, brown or green.

Please keep in mind that we are NOT going to paint our trims, at first that's what I was going to do until I visit the home, the trims are very rich and makes the home feels more welcoming.

Thank you in advance!

A: This could be a whole color consultation appointment, but some quick suggestions.... First, keep in mind that original Craftsman homes were often quite dark compared to our contemporary aesthetic. Sticking with off-whites works well, and if you want to distinguish different rooms (like you have in your bath/laundry room above), there can still be good flow from room to room. The grey accent wall in the dining area doesn't seem relate to anything else right now, and it doesn't fit with a cohesive plan using off-whites, so I recommend you either use that color elsewhere as well or paint over it. Also, the stringer and stair risers don't appear to relate to other stark white trim anywhere, so I would consider painting over that, as well to avoid your home from becoming too busy visually.

**Q: Need help with this wall? It’s 105 inches long! Found this mirror?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

A: Agree with Patricia; make sure the TV is mounted much lower, as well. It will cause neck strain at the height you have it. I don't mind the mirror and think it does a good job of linking to the fireplace tile, which is frankly the only other design element in the room currently, so recommendation would be for more elements to tie in with these (window ware, rug, pillows, lighting) and balance out the dark, large, and visually heavy furniture.

**Q: Does anyone recognize these chairs?** *(in Furniture)*

Recently bought 6 blue ones at a thrift shop and just now saw them in the Alexander McQueen documentary. Does anyone know anything about them?

A: Cool chairs! I would love to know if you figure it out. These are similar but frankly, I like yours better! https://www.etsy.com/listing/663411412/stilling-design-vintage-danish-beech?show\_sold\_out\_detail=1
