### Featured Review

**★★★★★ — Melanie Barros, Dec. 2019**

> Having completed the first half of our project, we could not be more pleased with Master Edge and their end to end renovation service. My husband and I had never done any extensive renovations before and didn't know where to start. After meeting with several local contractors, it was clear that Dwayne and his team were knowledgeable, experienced and serious about delivering on their commitments. They worked with us to capture our vision and deliver an architectural design that exceeded expectation. From day one, they have worked with us in partnership, explaining what needed to be done, why it was important and what it would cost. We absolutely loved the cloud-based project planner they use. It has made it a breeze for us to make decisions and stay on time and budget and communicate with everyone at Master Edge and even the specialized trades that have been a part of the project. Our neighbours have told us that Dwayne and his team have been professional and thoughtful about noise and disruption, several have even asked for consultation and quotes for their projects. The team at Master Edge has exceeded expectation and has made what could have been a stressful renovation seem like a fun and exciting project. We cannot wait to get to the finish line and move back into our fantastic home! UPDATE 2020 - We are in the house and LOVING IT! Dwayne and the team managed to get us in a few weeks early and underbudget which is pretty spectacular.

**Comment from Master Edge Homes:**

> Hi Melanie, sorry for my delay in responding, we were busy putting the finishing touches on your home. ;)
> We are thrilled with your very nice comments and truly believe it is a collaborative effort to make such a project be successful.

> Master Edge homes renovated our three bathrooms and we are thrilled with the results. The teams that came to our home were professional, courteous and completed their work to a high standard. What stood out to us was that, on the rare occasion that something went sideways, we were relaxed in the knowledge that the Master Edge team would take of it. Thanks Master Edge homes!

> We selected the team at Master Edge Homes to renovate our basement. From start to finish the entire were professional and efficient. They guided us through the project from start to finish. We were extremely happy with the result and now have an amazing basement thanks to them! I would highly recommend Master Edge Homes.

> Hi Ian, thank you very much for trusting Master Edge Homes with your special space. It's a great multi-use space and came together perfectly for you and your family.

> We have been working with Master Edge Homes (MEH) for several months and in our experience they are focused on all the things that are key to a positive outcome in working with a design / build company. This includes good communication, excellent quality work done on time, working to a plan and schedule, and outcomes that reflect a well organized and focused company.
>
> Dwayne Butler and his team at MEH have been working with us in developing a design plan for a first floor renovation. We have worked through design concepts, alternatives, and cost projections and we are well into more specific design decisions. MEH has a core design team and a broader team of project management staff who we’ve been working with to develop the best approach for structural changes, floor plan layout, special features and accessories for our kitchen, dining room, and main floor den. Everyone we’ve met has been helpful and focused on our needs and views regarding design. Our input and ideas have been welcomed and matched with their expert advice to arrive at decisions along the way.
>
> It is clear to us, even in the short time we’ve worked with MEH that there is a comradery and joy for the work that exists among their broader team that is reflected in their commitment to good work and client service. We are comforted by the good administration and organization at Master Edge Homes and we’re looking forward to our continued work with them as we move through the last stages of design and forward into the on-site renovation work this spring.

**Comment from Master Edge Homes:**

> Thank you Peter for the kind words. Our design team and I have had a wonderful time with you exploring ideas and helping you and Janie find the right design solutions and finishes to make this renovation amazing for you both. We look forward to the next step of getting this project underway and to seeing the fruits of our collaborative efforts all come together.

**★★★★★ — Cathy Granert, Nov. 2020**

> Dwayne at Master Edge Homes, on a recommendation from Renomark, has been a guest speaker to several groups at George Brown college, about the industry and how they do business. He has given generously of his time, despite busy schedules and has given back to the design and renovation community tremendously by sharing of his knowledge and experience. They have passed on some valuable learning from projects through the years. Thank you for raising the bar for the industry and helping us promote integrity and transparency with our clients!

**Comment from Master Edge Homes:**

> Thank you for the kind words Cathy, we have enjoyed speaking with the group at George Brown College over the years and it has been our pleasure to share our knowledge!

**★★★★★ — cqhaen, Oct. 2020**

> Master Edge Homes recently completed numerous renovations in our new home, and we are thrilled with the finished product. Planning and renovating during the pandemic introduced some unique challenges, but the Master Edge team adapted to help us navigate to completion. Our primary reason in selecting Master Edge was their reputation for delivering quality work. They certainly lived up to expectations here, with various trades completing their work with a focus on doing it right rather than doing it fast. Our renovation ran into a few unanticipated problems, but Master Edge was fair in our conversations and were clearly interested in our satisfaction. We would recommend Master Edge homes to those seeking a contractor who is easy to work with, has experienced staff and partners to help you through the process, and want a quality finished product with attention to detail.

**Comment from Master Edge Homes:**

> Thank you so much for your review Christine. The Master Edge Homes team is happy to hear you are enjoying your new space! It was a pleasure to work along side you to help bring your ideas a reality!

**★★★★★ — Effie Manziaris, June 2020**

> Dwayne and his team at Master Edge Homes recently completed an extensive renovation of our main floor and master bedroom ensuite. Our renovation looks amazing!
>
> The team at Master Edge Homes were really great to work with. They were all so professional and were very attentive to all our needs. The upfront work to set the scope and expectations was very detailed and ensured us that Master Edge knew what we expected from the renovation. Master Edge set a high standard for the project and truly create a culture of customer focus with their site team and sub-trades. They made sure to address all our needs and priorities throughout the renovation. They also ensured that the project stayed on schedule and on budget. The online project management system was a very effective tool for communication, progress and next steps allowing us to connect throughout the day. The team’s support in ensuring timely decisions from us, really helped us juggle busy days at work while keeping the renovation on schedule.
>
> We are truly pleased with our renovation and we are now really enjoying our renewed home! Master Edge made our renovation process a wonderful experience and we are so grateful to the Maser Edge team!

**Comment from Master Edge Homes:**

> Thank you so very much for your review Effie. The Master Edge Homes team is happy to hear you love your new home. Working with clients like you certainly does make our job easier. Wishing you many years of comfort and joy!

> Master Edge Homes are truly one of the most professional, reliable and quality driven companies that we work for. Everyone we interact with at Master Edge Homes continually conducts our business together with the upmost integrity. We are a very proud at Silverwood Kitchens to be a supplier to Master Edge Homes. I would not hesitate to refer anyone to have their renovation completed by Master Edge Homes as I can honestly say they will exceed any expectations someone may have going into a new project with them.
>
> Josh Reyce
> President
> Silverwood Kitchens & Bath Inc.

**Comment from Master Edge Homes:**

> Thank you so much Josh, for your kind words and your professional partnership over the years. We continue to have great confidence in referring our clients to work with Silverwood Kitchens, not only because of the exceptional quality of the end result, but also because of the respect and integrity you demonstrate throughout the process.

**★★★★★ — Scott & Lisa Harper, Nov. 2019**

> In short, Master Edge Homes is a professionally-run design build firm with a strong commitment to excellence. From Dwayne, the president, on down they communicate clearly and stand by their word; their work is outstanding and they deliver on time, on budget right to the end and beyond. They have their processes "nailed down" (sorry! couldn't resist) such that I have faith that any Master Edge Homes customer will be treated with the same care and respect that we received and continue to receive.
>
> It seems we all know someone who has had a reno that went south - either the contractor was dishonest, the work was subpar or incomplete, or it went way over budget. Not the case here at all. Master Edge Homes strives toward a much higher standard and not just a high standard for the building industry but for any industry. If you work in the business world and are used to a certain level of professionalism but have yet to find it in a builder - look no further.
>
> Despite being a local firm, we found Master Edge Homes on Houzz. From our first meeting with Dwayne we knew it was going to be a good fit. He is a class act and we’ve been so very pleased with our decision to hire them. ABSOLUTELY NO REGRETS. Only good things to say about them.
>
> In short order, here’s how things worked out:
>
> PERMITS
> Our particular location has challenges in terms of obtaining approvals from our city’s heritage / historic committee and a regional conservation group. Dwayne, Nathan and the team were effective in navigating the lengthy and stringent permit process. Without their patience and persistence, we would not have received the necessary approvals.
>
> DESIGN
> It would be an understatement to say that my wife and I were quite involved with the design. Dwayne, Nathan and team were always very responsive in drawing out our ideas and coming up with good ideas of their own based on past projects. It was truly collaborative. They were incredibly patient with us - even when I would go back and forth on certain design elements and would adjust fine details. Thanks guys!
>
> BUILD
> Enter Jason, the project manager - an amazing PM. Jason ran the show like he was renovating his own house. He was invaluable to the project. We can’t say enough good things about him and the whole crew. First off, they’re all friendly, respectful and have the customer’s interests at heart. He’s knowledgeable on seemingly all aspects of construction and pays incredible attention to detail. There were multiple times when we were dumbfounded that he’d know a minor detail about something we’d expect only the relevant subtrade to know. He had the complete respect of the various trades (plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc.) and he managed them very effectively. After seeing Jason almost every day for a year, it was a bit sad when the project finished up and he moved on to his next project. Also, just a quick note about the trades. They only work with subcontractors that uphold the same values and embody the same spirit that Master Edge Homes does. Never once did we have to deal with a subcontractor that was less than professional or not courteous and respectful. It was consistent through out.
>
> WARRANTY PHASE
> There have been a few minor things that they’ve come back to fix - some things we noticed but also some things they’ve noticed and addressed…and on their own dime. There is some additional work we’ve had them do and are planning to have them do; we have complete confidence it will be done well.
>
> BOTTOM LINE
> This review is a bit like telling everyone about your favourite restaurant; after your review, you’re afraid you won’t be able to get a table there anymore. Treat this review as the same. Great people; great workmanship. Two very happy customers.

**Comment from Master Edge Homes:**

> Hello Scott and Lisa, thank you both for your thoughts and comments on our amazing team. Your home turned out absolutely beautiful and we all thank you for including us on the journey to help and work with you both to make it happen!

**★★★★★ — Centennial Railings, Sept. 2019**

> Dwayne, Anne, Kim and the entire team at Master Edge Homes. It truly has been a pleasure to work as a supplier for you now for many years. The level of excellence that you provide your clients is second to none with your team of highly motivated, skilled and organized individuals that make what we do for you, truly enjoyable. From the moment we meet with your clients to the moment we complete their new railing and/or stair tread covers, we can look back at our product finished perfectly to your standards. It's a journey that clients can't find with just anyone.

**Comment from Master Edge Homes:**

> Thank you so much for the kind review Livio. We always enjoy working with your talented team. It's a pleasure to partner with others in the industry that share our passion for excellence!

**★★★★★ — Bruce Tilden, Jan. 2019**

> Masters Edge Homes planned, executed and delivered a complete renovation of our second floor including the washrooms, hardwood flooring, lighting and the main staircase. They then painted both the first and second levels including the ceilings. The result is extremely pleasing. Their professionalism, attention to detail and prompt addressing of issues was appreciated. Their level of organization and genuine caring were the key differentiators. We'd recommend Master Edge's services to anyone considering a significant re-do of their personal residence.

**Comment from Master Edge Homes:**

> Thank you so much for the kind recommendation Bruce. We're thrilled to know that you are enjoying your renovated space as much as we enjoyed creating it with you. Wishing you many more years of enjoyment and comfort in your beautiful home.

**★★★★★ — Tami Brisland, Dec. 2017**

> Master Edge Homes worked with us to make our vision a reality in remodeling our main floor 1970’s house. Not our first renovation project, we wish we had found Master Edge sooner and will not consider any other company for our future projects.
>
> Working with Anne, Dwayne and the entire Master Edge team, was truly a pleasure. Their crew and contractors were professional, skilled, friendly and showed personal interest and pride of workmanship at every stage of our project, working closely with us to ensure the end product was always in line with our vision of the space we were working to create. While our project was on the smaller side of their portfolio, they showed the same attention to detail and commitment from design through to completion as a larger project. Their use of the latest on-line scheduling tools, understanding of the by-laws, codes, materials and products and the close relationship they foster with their crew and contractors ensured we were always up to date on the status of the project and there were no surprises in the budget, schedule and quality of the finished product.
>
> When we encountered an unrelated leak, they went above and beyond in working to ensure it was properly and completely fixed before proceeding, managing the scheduling to ensure the project remained on schedule and on-budget without compromise.
>
> We are thrilled with the finished product and every guest since has complimented the quality of work, detail and the subtle finishing touches in this space which is now the heart of our home. We cannot say enough about Master Edge Homes and would highly recommend them to anyone considering a build or renovation project and appreciates fine workmanship and quality.

**Comment from Master Edge Homes:**

> Thank you Tami! It was truly a pleasure working with you as well. Being welcomed back for an evening to personally thank us, was very much appreciated by all our team members. So nice to be able to see the finishing touches completed after our work is done. May your new space bring you much comfort and joy!

**★★★★★ — Amanda Dingman, July 2017**

> Dwayne and his team transformed our home to a stunning show piece. We had a complete main floor and upstairs renovation with detailed woodwork and tilling throughout. The quality and craftsmanship of the work is amazing. If there were ever any unforeseen issues that would arise, the team has deep industry knowledge and a common sense approach to resolving issues to ensure our needs were met. We would not hesitate to recommend Master Edge Homes to anyone, You will not be disappointed with the work or the team!

**★★★★★ — monacanada, June 2017**

> We recently had the pleasure of working with Master Edge Homes to put in a main floor addition and to upgrade our first and second floors. Master Edge Homes helped us obtain a number of permits including ones for building, trees and the TRCA. We were very pleased with their design work which has resulted in our house having exceptional functionality for our busy family and beautiful sight lines. They were very easy to work with- professional, high quality work, strong project management and excellent trades people. Their online project management system kept us up to date about timelines, costs and next steps. The project was done on budget and on time and we are now enjoying our renovated house every day. Master Edge Homes made the renovation process as easy as it could be for us. Thank you Master Edge Homes!

**★★★★★ — Marie Edwards, April 2017**

> I recently contracted with Dwayne Butler (owner of Master Edge Homes) to build a second storey to my bungalow. From the beginning he was enthusiastic and creative until the very last day of the contract. His employees did excellent design and work, and the end result, because of the professionalism and competence of the entire company, is that I now have a beautiful home on the inside and outside. My neighbors have told me that my "new home" is "awesome, incredible improvement, unbelievable etc." I am very lucky to have chosen Master Edge Homes as my contractor and I would certainly recommend Master Edge Homes to anyone who asked for my opinion.

**Comment from Master Edge Homes:**

> Thank you Marie, it was a very nice project to design and build for you.
> Regards,
> Dwayne

**★★★★★ — Kim Katz, April 2016**

> We engaged Master Edge Homes on a major remodel of the first and second floors of our older home. From start to finish, we were impressed with the team's transparent communication and adherence to timelines, despite additions we made to the project scope. It's never easy to live onsite during a renovation, however the Master Edge team did everything in their power to ensure our comfort and safety. Our project was completed on time and budget and we are overjoyed with the result. We highly recommend them every chance we get.

**★★★★★ — Soda Pop Design Inc., March 2016**

> We've worked together with master edge homes on a few jobs and each of them moved seamlessly from start to finish. Our clients are happy with the ability to stick to timelines and budget as well as their superb attention to detail. This is a highly professional team who know how to deliver the professional jaw-dropping results we work so tirelessly to create in design. I look forward to working together with them again and again.

**★★★★★ — Carin Lin, Jan. 2016**

> We hired Master Edge Homes to do a renovation of our first floor, including a complete remake of our kitchen. The project involved the removal of two walls, including one load-bearing wall. Dwayne and his team were amazing! From start to finish they were professional, courteous and a pleasure to work with. We were impressed with their responsiveness throughout the project and appreciated their attention to detail. The entire crew stands by the company's high quality standards and made sure all work was done correctly. We were pleased that our project came in within budget and was actually finished a week early! How often does that ever happen with contractors?! There were a few instances where Dwayne and the team went above and beyond to make sure everything was in order. Master Edge Homes made our first renovation experience a wonderful one, unlike many of the horror stories you often hear. Thanks to the whole team for helping transform our home!

**★★★★★ — murphy27243, Dec. 2015**

> Master Edge Homes has been working with us for 10 years. They have successfully completed many projects in our home. They finished our basement 10 years ago and it still looks like it was just completed.
> Dwayne Butler and his team are a pleasure to work with. Dwayne always takes the time to answer all our questions.
> Master Edge also replaced our carpet on the second floor with an Engineered Hardwood and installed Safe and Sound insulation in the floor cavity at the same time then replaced all baseboards, door and window trim.
> The latest project in May 2014 was a Kitchen renovation. We are so happy with the finished product. Functionality was the goal and we achieved it together.

**★★★★★ — dwhopper, Aug. 2014**

> We did a complete rebuild with Master Edge. The work went smoothly and the end product is superb. We challenged the contractor with difficult tiling layouts, stained wood trim and a very picky engineer client.

  - Description: Our clients were looking to update their main floor and wanted to have a more open and welcoming space that was more family-friendly. All internal walls were removed with the exception of a half wall remaining at the front of the home which provides a bit of separation for the entrance and living room. A complaint of the original staircase was that it was dark. As you can tell from the photo, the sun tunnel we installed provides an exceptional amount of light. The kitchen was replaced and provid…

  - Description: Change was necessary for the next chapter to unfold in this sweet home. By opening up the space, family and friends will have more room to move about freely. We discovered sweet spots for our clients to pursue and develop while walking through the home. The front window provides the best view of the streetscape. There is plenty of natural light, space for the new sink, and counter space for more small appliances. As soon as we saw the interior walls, we knew they had to go. A major part of impro…

  - Description: Our team was entrusted to transform this heritage home on a beautiful ravine lot in historic Unionville, while maintaining it's warmth, character and charm. During the design phase, it was important to the homeowners that the cottage style of the home be maintained and that the addition blend seamlessly with the original facade of the building. Careful attention was paid to the design of the exterior to match pitches, materials and dormer sizes and styles to achieve this objective. Because of it…

  - Description: OVERVIEW: With a main floor split up into many rooms, our clients were looking for a more open family space, and more natural light. The original layout of the main floor was split into thirds. The kitchen, at the back of the house, was in the middle between two load bearing walls. These walls were removed to create a family room that is off to the side, but not completely separated from the kitchen. New fireplace facing and new built-in cabinets were added to the family room. While initially, a…

  - Description: From its start as a rooming house in the late 1800s, this home had seen some changes over the years, but its original esthetics and structure bore the test of time. With the goals our client determined as priority, we were commissioned to create an open concept main floor, build a modern kitchen, achieve the best possible use of the limited space, all while keeping some of the historical essence of the home.

## Community Q&A

**Q: What to do with this area?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

To the left of the vent intake is the reach-in pantry. Across from that is a built in desk switch cabinet uppers.
In this space, wife wants a cabinet with floating shelves above. Measurements: 53-1/2” wide, 27-1/2” deep, 82-1/2” high. Wide enough for 30” + 24” base cabinets (assuming the sheetrock is 1/2” thick that I can remove).
What do you suggest, base cabinets or search high and low for a buffet or something that would fit??

A: Agreed. The function is huge when making a decision for the space. What comes to my mind is are you planning to display items? Use this as a servery for your guests to walk up and help themselves when entertaining. Or specifically storage for overflow of goods. I would begin there.

**Q: Help with an annoying fireplace!** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hello! We’re at the beginning of a remodel and are looking for a budget friendly solution to this awkwardly placed fireplace, besides the fact that it’s not symetrical. We plan on fixing the powder room door to the left to open inward, removing the bookcase, painting and adding new flooring. Aside from painting it white, does anyone have a budget friendly suggestion on how to make this look better? It’s a smaller greatroom and this is the view from the front door.

A: I too find this to be a challenge. Is this fireplace a dividing wall between two rooms? Is it necessary to have?

**Q: half bath layout help!** *(in Building a Home)*

Does anybody have any suggestions on a different layout for this half bath? Something about it isnt sitting right with me. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

A: I agree, the proportions look much better. appropiriate for there use and functional space

**Q: What kind of flooring would look good here?** *(in Remodeling)*

Hello! We are in the process of buying this home. We want to remove the carpet in this formal living area but we aren't sure what would look good next to the hardwood floors. Especially since part of the steps are on the carpet side & part of it is on the hardwood side. We love hardwood floors but the price is a bit too expensive right now. Any thoughts on flooring type and color? We're stumped. Thanks!

A: I agree with many fo these comments. My concern if you decide to wait, the dilot for your exsiting hardwood can be tough to match. I personally had this problem, very tricky to feather in new and old when there is a sheen and no sheen. perhaps get a quote for removing the carpet, applying new unfinished hardwood. Sand down the exising hardwood to have it all stained as one floor. The costs could be comparable between new floors and re-finishing.

**Q: Please share your favorite/most durable interior finishes & materials!** *(in Building a Home)*

Hi, we are planning a new build and my goal is to make it as low-maintenance and worry-free as possible.
We own two dogs, I’m very clumsy plus I bake and cook a lot, husband is an avid outdoors person… we are always going to track in dirt/chip delicate surfaces/have sauce splatters & too many hot pans and baking sheets being used at once, shed fur & scratch things!
Everything needs to be easy to clean/hide tracked in dirt/be very durable & take abuse.
What are your tried & true building material & design suggestions? Grout colors? Tile shape/type? Countertop edge style? Easy to clean toilet? Sink that’s least likely to chip or scratch? Etc…
(The one thing I really deeply dislike is laminate flooring. Other than that I’m open to any and all suggestions!) I’d love a rustic hand sawn look floor that hides scratches but what I’ve I read says they tend to trap dirt etc. in the grooves. Not limiting the discussion; just sharing as an example… it feels like there are pros and cons to everything and I really want to keep things simple (both in style/design and our decision-making process!)

A: This post, we appalud. Makes sense.
Concrete flooring, now that can take abuse. The wood cabinets, they two can age nicely, I personally like the idea of soemthing aging. Its natual patina as mentioned previoulsy. Keeping the materials raw, natural and simple. I would use granite as there are many slabs that are literally art for your kitchen. This creates a natural conversation with your guests. One level is smart @Kristin Petro, CKBD aging in place is top of mind these days we are finding. Large openings, wheelchair accesible cabinets for our clients to use and not feel restricted. Simple open concept living with environmentally friendly and pet friendly products seem to be the focus.

**Q: How to make kitchen island open shelves useful** *(in Organizing the Home)*

Our kitchen island has open shelving, but is not very deep and tends to just look cluttered when putting stuff on it. The other issue is we have an almost 1 year old baby who is going to start walking, so it’s really not practical to store things he can easily pull down.
Would love to be able to use this space somehow without removing the island. Initially thought about installing sliding cabinet doors but that might more of a project than I’d like right now because of the molding. Any other ideas or creative storage solutions that could be used here?
The shelves are about 8.5” deep and about 14” high.

A: I would contact a custom cabinet company to come in, measure and see the space. I agree with the cabinet doors as that will help keep your little one from accessing all of the items at his/her level. Allowing you to use the shelves for all items that fit. Sometimes it is difficult to find the right size baskets or bins that suit the space and hold the appropriate things. Sliding doors I would not recommend as this will restrict you from having full access to the shelves. At this moment my recommendation is cabinet doors with nice hardware to compliment the kitchen.
