We spent several months researching and contacting builders before connecting with Sterling. Before knowing he had our business, he spent an exceptional amount of time laying out his process and helping us to understand what he and his company can do. He calculated a detailed budget based on our desires that included his management fee which I appreciated the transparency of. > > We ultimately decided to go with Sterling based on his accessibility, experience, and flexibility. At the time we felt that Sterling would allow us to customize our house in any way we desired, use some of our own trade workers, and be available when we needed him. Of course we didn't know for sure if that was how it would go, but based on his other reviews and conversations we had, we were confident that, that would be the case. Not only was that the case, we were truly blown away by how much Sterling cared and was available to us. We were never once told no, it was "let me work on that for you". We didn't call an office to leave a message for his assistant, we called him and he answered or called back each time. We also enjoyed the transparency of the project. We saw all the bills and invoices from Sterling's fees to the temporary toilet we rented. Sterling provides high quality work, and has great ideas that really added that custom feel to our home. We were looking for someone who would work with us on our dream custom built lakefront home. We chose Sterling Mintzer and he definitely met our expectations. Sterling truly cares about his clients and always had our best interests at heart. There are so many choices in building a custom home it can be a overwelming task. Sterling helped by providing ideas, pictures, and suppliers where we could see items to help create our dream home. He cared that we got something we loved and not just the cheapest. He had the insulation contractor quote us with & without closed foam in areas. We chose to add foam for additional cost now and we are glad we did. Heating bills are half the cost of our previous house. All of the contractors that worked on our home took great pride in their craftsmanship, did quality work and were responsive in answering questions. The trimwork and staircase came out amazing! Also trim extension above kitchen cabinets of 9 ft ceiling is stunning! Sterling recommended Niko's Imports for our Australian eucalyptus hardwood floor which we love and saved money. Sterling was very responsive to our questions and concerns with communication by email, text, and phone calls. Being on lakefront caused some challenges which Sterling solved with his engineer contractors keeping overages at a minimum and helped keep stress down. A previous builder we were working with (for 8 months) to design and build our new home, left us homeless, and frustrated after doubling his verbal estimates days after we tore down our home to rebuild. > > From our first contact with Mintzer, everything was professional, courteous, and (important to us) accurately priced from the get-go. He quickly delivered written estimates that were spot on for the entire project, when there were surprises, he took responsibility and always made things right. > > We were unique in that we only wanted the weather-tight shell of a house built, and we wanted to finish the interior ourselves. Most builders we talked to said they were not interested in this type of project; it is our belief that a lot of the profit is made in the finish work of custom houses. Sterling clearly laid out what were his actual costs, and what he was charging for his services, and provided all receipts for the work. > > We were also unique in that we hoped to break ground before the weather got too cold to pour the foundation. Other builders said to contact them in the spring, but Sterling explained the possible outcomes and delays and the risks if we wanted to proceed. There were a few days of frigid weather that Michigan winter, but luckily it was very mild and crews were able to work on the construction through the entire winter. Sterling kept us updated often, but not overwhelming, about delays (mainly due to frost laws), and progress. > > The contractors Mitzer Build uses for construction were great as well. They were on-site when they said they would be, answered questions that we had, made all of the last minute changes that we decided on and kept to the agreed upon prices. In doing our homework, we started looking into pricing for foundation, framing and other job portions so we had an idea of what different parts of the job would cost us, assuming the contracts we hired stuck with their quotes (many do not!). Sterling ended up SAVING us money over doing the whole project ourselves. Framing labor alone was $50k less than our initial option… that is huge! I cannot even begin to think about how much stress he relieved from us as well. > > Even upon completion of his share of the project Sterling was giving us options for contractors and additional advise from his experience in the industry. > > We would recommend Sterling Mitzer to anyone looking to build a home, we already do to all of our friends! Any other details are helpful!** *(in Photo Questions)* A: Hi Christina - this mantle is a hand hewn beam removed from a barn. Dimensions are 7" x 7" and approximately 8' long. The customer applied a clear coat varnish after it was installed.
