The house is brick on the outside, with many interior upgrades--copper kitchen ceiling, wide plank cherry floors, antique marble and limestone fireplace mantles, and use of antique doors, pillars, etc. I would hire him again. I have recommended him to friends. > > His strong suit is quality and financial honesty. He does very good work and expects the same from very good subs. I did not like his mason and he agreed to switch him out to a very good one. His carpenters were great. The HVAC sub was only good, not great. The carpenters did a superb job on the all-mahogany study and its coffered mahogany ceiling. They put in historic, highly detailed mouldings and matched the corners and designs on the pilasters perfectly. The architect thought it could not be done and expected them to grind off the detail. He can look at an unfinished space and tell exactly what size molding would work best. I never met anyone who could judge sizes from a distance so accurately. ("That isn't 12 inches, it is a lot closer to 14"). I would of course challenge him with a tape measure and laugh that he was accurate. He would rip out work the architect did not like or that was imperfect. He is very good at working with an architect and respects the architect's guidance. > > We hired him in part because he was a lot cheaper than more established luxury builders. No regrets. He was always honest financially. > > Downsides? I have had another contractor who kept a much tighter schedule, but he cut so many corners I thought him a crook and wish France had done the job. Our 15 month project took closer to 18 months. Given its scale and intricacy, and some changes we made, I cannot complain. > > France is a builder, not a paperwork guy. We've worked with a lot of contractors in remodeling two different homes, and it was a total pleasure to work with Maillet Development. Our house was literally cleaner at the end of each day than we left it in the morning - carpet hand vacuumed at the end of each night. (We have two small children- so this was a huge plus.) All of the work was so carefully detailed, exact and efficient. There were absolutely no problems, which for an antique house is truly amazing. There were no wasteful errors (we have become sort of accustomed to this in other projects with other contractors.) We were actually sad when the project was over because we really liked working with France- it was so easy. The space came out beautiful. He did our tile/natural stone in the large shower, built-ins next to the claw-foot tub, pocket doors, beautiful custom shelving in the closets. It really looks amazing, and it was so easy communicating with France, because he really listens to what you want and while he makes good suggestions, really tries to keep the project true to what you're looking for. Pricing was very fair and clear at all times. Work moved along on schedule. All the subcontractors were professional, skilled and timely.
