Don't vary height of your cabinets--use taller wall cabinets to meet under the soffit on the refrigerator/range wall. A: Could be Persian White or Santa Cecilia. Very hard to tell in a photo but start with those two. **Q: Kitchen Lighting Help!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are renovating and we want to put nice decorative lighting above our Kitchen island. My husband wants LED pot lights throughout the rest of the kitchen for energy saving. Any recommendations for new trends for energy saving options. I am not sure if I like pot lights???? A: The pot lights are for overall general lighting and LED units will be great. I like a decorative fixture over the island but make sure that it casts light down on the island surface. That can also be an LED fixture or you can replace bulbs with LEDs as needed. Please use under cabinet lighting as well to illuminate your countertop work space--yes to LEDs again! I am a big fan of having lighting on dimmer switches to control amount of light for different times of day or day/night options. **Q: Pendant lighting on vaulted ceiling** *(in Design Dilemma)* Do pendant lights work on the vaulted ceiling? I'm worried about the long rod or cord. I'll need to use a bronze finish and think it might be too bold. could I use bronze fixture and light rod.cord? A: Go ahead and use Bronze. The cable or rod is not very big. The bottom of the light fixture should be 30"-34" above the counter for good illumination. **Q: Need a flooring primer!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Can you explain the pros and cons of hardwood floors vs engineered hardwood floors? A: Traditional hardwood floors are solid 3/4" thick boards, generally not wider than 3" to prevent warping. They come 2 ways--site finished or pre-finished. A site finished floor is laid raw, stained (or left natural), sanded in place, and finished with several layers of polyurethane or other clear coating in your choice of gloss level. Pre-finished hardwood comes stained, sealed, and ready to install from a factory, with an aluminum oxide or other wear layer for protection and durability. Engineered wood is a real wood veneer on top of a plywood substrate. Higher end engineered wood generally has a thicker veneer. The plywood is more stable than solid hardwood, so you you will be able to choose larger plank sizes with an engineered wood. Also comes pre-finished from a factory with a wear layer for protection. Since they are not sanded on site, factory finished hardwood and engineered wood planks have a micro-bevel edge to counteract any slight unevenness in the floor during installation. A site finished wood floor seals joints between the boards, but with all wood floors, those joints will move slightly with change in seasons. Some wood species are harder than others but all wood floors can scratch or dent from pets, unprotected furniture legs, etc. I hope that helps! **Q: Open plan wood effect tile** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi , I'm thinking of having a wood effect tile throughout my ground floor , good or bad idea, has anyone got a picture of a wood effect tile floor. Or some advice A: Here's some examples of wood plank tile: Wood look tile Pros: looks great!, lots of design options including rustic looks. Good choice for warm or high humidity climates Luxurious feel if you use radiant floor head Cons: Cold and hard, especially for those with joint or back issues Real wood flooring, solid or engineered, is always a great choice and is still favored for resale value.
