> Acadia Stairs and Todd Norman were fantastic to work with.  The product was delivered in a timely fashion and to specification.  Todd spent time with me upfront to review the needed details and develop the build prints necessary for a remote project (I was in MI, he in NY).  Acadia was flexible in making changes to the design prior to fabrication to keep the design image I was targeting while working with me to stay within my budgetary guidelines. Acadia's workmanship was excellent and when I ran into some in-field installation issues, they worked with me to fabricate additional parts to remedy them.  I will look to use Acadia again for a spiral outdoor staircase in the near future.

> Initially I contacted Acadia stairs via internet for budgetary information for a stair case for a remodel/addition.  The project required integration of the existing lower stair case to a new riser, tread, and rail system extending to an upper level addition.  I worked with Todd to plan and design the riser and rail system.  Todd was very helpful, carefully explaining the structural solutions that his company could provide and working with me to stay within my budgetary and aesthetic guidelines.
> Ultimately I was responsible for ensuring that I met all local codes, but Todd's knowledge of the general building requirements were very helpful in directing/focusing my inquiries to local building inspectors.  I provided sketch diagrams of my existing stair well, walls, and sub flooring and Acadia provided me with detailed build prints that I could use to confirm the accuracy of our back-and-forth communication/understanding. Ultimately the prints were used as the signoff docments for fabrication.  Todd spent several hours, on several occasions, on the phone (I'm in MI, he is in NY) confirming the information and incorporating feedback into the prints (as you might imagine the existing structure having been built in the 1960s posed quite a challenge as we needed to meet updated codes while constrained to the existing structure -plumb, square, or not).

> Todd was also very cooperative in adding into his design prints dimensional diagrams that I could in turn use to provide fabrication instructions for the wood treads and rails that I was having made by another craftsman.

> We ran into a small issue when the parts were shipped - a component was missing and  after I completely unpackaged everything I noticed some damaged parts and several cosmetic blemishes on the rails - clearly due to the shipping process. While the shipper offered zero recourse Acadia replaced the missing part without hesitation (or charge), shipped me subcomponents to replace those damaged, and materials to fix the blemishes (they did offer to repair the blemishes, but ultimately we concluded it would be faster and easier for me to sand and patch the materials on site.)

> Installation overall went very well.  The single, center bone stringers (each 300+ pounds) slipped right into place.  The stringer plate pitch was spot on and matched nicely to my treads to keep within the 3/8" pitch tolerance of the tread rise per code.  Rails met all dimensional specs and installed very smoothly.  The only minor issue I encountered was with 2 of the 80 rail cables.  When I went to apply tension the swage connection failed - nothing $10 worth of threaded ends and a swage tool couldn't fix.

A: Yes we do sell the hardware separately. Each system is tailored to the specific layout needed. You can design your own ship ladder, or we can also provide shop drawings that you can use to  make your own ship ladder. **Q: what is the depth needed for 8’ loft ship’s ladder** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thank you for your great question. We custom make each ship ladder. Most of the ship ladders we make have a max. tread run of 5" (the tread is 5 1/2", but there is an overlap from tread to tread). Going up 8' can be up to 11 risers @ 8.72" = 11 treads (top tread flush with upper floor) so the total stair length (horizontal distance) from the face of the header to the nose of the bottom tread is about 55". It is more common to use 10 risers @ 9.6" in this case, and if it is a fixed ship ladder with the top tread down 1 riser, it would have 9 treads with a total run of 45". That said, we can make ship ladders with nearly any tread run. Some clients have limitations that, as an example, could require a 3" tread run (30" total run). If you require a 1 directional wall sliding ship ladder the stringers are normally made of 5/4"x6" select grade hardwood (typically red oak, but other species are available) so the ladder would have a minimum depth of about 7" when not in use. What is the height from floor to loft floor and how much footprint does this ladder need?

A: This particular ladder was about 9 feet from floor to floor. We custom build each ship ladder to the needs of each project. In general, ship ladders have riser heights 9" - 11" high. We also tailor the run to the needs of the space. In general tread run is 3" - 5". This ship ladder came out about 3 feet from the edge of the loft. This ladder is also a bit more narrow than usual at 18" wide. Most of our ship ladders are 24", but we can make nearly any width - with a suggested max of 30".
