It won’t be exactly in the middle bc of the stud. I fear that it will look like we tried to center it but didn’t quite get it right. Perhaps I should just forget the whole idea. See the photo with the red rectangle. This is about where the installer said he could put it. No other walls would allow for it. A: This is standard procedure for remodel niche locations but if you want a different location you could re frame the back wall. In your situation you would also have to move the knob and tube wiring. **Q: Shower door type for bathroom with wood floors** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi, I'm just starting to pull together my choices for a small master bathroom renovation. We currently have a molded tub insert which I hate. The ceiling is low and so it's claustrophobic. I've been using the guest shower for the past 12 years! We have beautiful wood floors through the master bedroom, dressing area and bathroom. The wood floor has held up great with a tub and shower curtain but now we are putting in a walk-in shower (with a curb) and wanted advice on shower door style. And the plan is to also open up above the shower to the ceiling. So Sliding or hinged door? Any advice? thanks in advance. A: With a shower as you describe a frame less single panel and swing door is what most desire. Another option is a high end slider. The slider could be less expensive. I have a shower on my site (front page) that was a tub/shower conversion to a walk in shower (just as you describe and we also removed a dropped ceiling). It has a frame less glass swing door. Classic Structures Inc. / Portland Oregon **Q: How to hide cracks in granite?** *(in Home Repair)* There is a hairline crack about 10 inches long going down one corner in my Absolute Black granite fireplace surround. I am not going to tear it out and replace it over this. I was told there is something that can be rubbed into the thin crack that minimizes the appearance of the crack and makes it much less visible. The person who told me about it forgot what product does this. What are recommendations? A: I don't know of a permanent off the shelf product. When a counter top is installed the seams are filled with epoxy blended with some of the dust from the counter top fabrication. They mix and fill onsite. **Q: runner over carpeted stairs?** *(in Flooring)* We have carpeted stairs in our new house. I don't want them to get trashed. What are the rules on using a runner or treads over carpeting on stairs? A: Technically your stairs should have the rise and run the same for each step. The universal building code (unless it had changed) allows for 1/4" variation overall. If it is new carpet I would just by extra and replace the stair carpet as desired. Many who have hardwood stairs put a runner so that people don't slip. I am sure if you measured the rise and run in these situations it would not meet code but they do it anyway. I hope this helps. **Q: CONCRETE-LOOK PORCELAIN TILE VS. REAL CONCRETE TILE** *(in Polls)* To the eye, is there a difference in the look of the porcelain tile that looks like concrete and actual real concrete tile? If you walked into a house with big concrete-look porcelain tile would you think it is real concrete or would you know it's the concrete-look porcelain? Can anybody tell if the tile in the pics below is concrete-look porcelain tile or real concrete tile?? I love these big pavers! A: I am sure that is concrete. There is some larger porcelain counter top material that I have seen. I don't have the name of the tile handy but we installed some 2'x2' porcelain tile in a bathroom and it looked a lot like concrete. Porcelain is water and stain proof and concrete is not. You can seal concrete but the sealer is not permanent. **Q: Stave Core Doors** *(in Woodworking)* We just bought around a dozen stave cored doors to incorporate a hidden hinge on our interior doors. The doors are garbage. They are a birch with a veneer that is so thin that it feels like paper flaking off. We had them painted and the doors now feel like they are a distressed or hand planed wood. There is a wave and its as if you can see the construction of the door through the veneer. Can anyone recommend a door manufacturer that makes a stave core door that won't break the bank ? ? We have unusual size doors so they will have to be custom most likely but I don't want to hang a bad door if possible. A: Here is the problem. There are so many super cheap / garbage flat panel doors for sale that most door manufactures have stopped trying to compete. They gave up the market. You will now have to pay for a custom door and its associated cost.
