Tom Palmer doesn’t just build cabinets. He enjoys going to meet his prospective customers and hearing what their ideas and dreams are for their home. He enjoys working with them to figure out the characteristics and details that will make that project uniquely theirs. Tom has a real knack for figuring out how to get the most use out of a given space and his experience has given him the ability to give ideas when his customers just aren’t exactly sure what they want. He will be there for planing the boards, building the doors and drawers, and putting the finish on each piece. Then he enjoys installing the finished product in his customer’s home and being able to stand back and see the dream turned into reality. He enjoys carrying on that legacy that Ed taught him. In 1985, Tom Palmer was working for a lumber warehouse in Central Florida. As he made visits to the local cabinet shops, he struck up a friendship with Ed Chiavini of Chiavini’s Custom Cabinets. One day Ed made Tom an offer he just couldn’t pass up. He said, “I know you don’t know anything about building cabinets. But if you’ll come to work for me and promise to give me four years, I’ll teach you everything I know about cabinet making.” Tom ended up staying with Chiavini’s for seven years. And Ed made good on his promise. Tom started out sweeping the floors and cleaning up the shop and by the time he left, he was a Master Craftsman. Today, every kitchen, bath vanity, desk, bookcase, media center, linen closet, and more, that leaves Palmer’s Wood Designs shop is hand-crafted just the way Ed taught Tom. About 2 years ago I contacted Tom for the first time about building bookcases for the foyer of my home in St. Cloud. They were beautifully made, and were quite a statement on entry to the home. When I sold my home, I knew Palmer's would be the ones to call for their fine workmanship. Tom and I came up with a design for the bookcases in my office / living room, to incorporate a library ladder I had had for at least 15 years or more. In addition, we worked on a design for a media center for the family rec area. Although I was already familiar with Tom's work, I must admit I was blown away at the end results. Tom is a pleasure to work with, he listens to your ideas, and as a result of his many years in the trade, has wonderful ideas of his own. His pricing is fair, and his projected schedule is spot on. He took our general ideas, refined them, and came up with a practical, beautiful design to meet our storage needs. He personally came to our home to take measurements and further refine the design, then made the most beautiful piece of furniture we've ever seen. His attention to detail, quality, and craftsmanship are beyond compare--the piece included 6 huge louvered doors, all of which he constructed with small, individually hand-made slats...a painstaking, labor-intensive endeavor, to be sure. His price was more than fair, especially given the labor-intensive effort required to construct the louvered doors and hand-stain the large piece. The project was completed on time and under budget.
