**★★★★ — Sada Pope, Feb. 2019**

> We recently worked with Morgan to finish/wrap-up designing our living & dining room. Morgan took over our project after it had started, and was able to get caught up to speed just through a quick conversation and a couple emails. Morgan took the time to talk to me as we tried to finalize the designs, and always turned around her deliverables on a timely basis. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Morgan and am looking forward to our work on our next project.

**★★★★★ — Patricia Hellyer, July 2018**

> Of the three designers I have engaged in as many homes over the years, Morgan Taylor of Brass Bones Design surpassed them by successfully helping us achieve a most daunting challenge of downsizing from an 8,000 sq. ft. Georgian Colonial home to a transitional design half that size. We were relocating from Bethesda, Maryland to the Willowsford Farm community in Loudoun County, Virginia and knew not a single interior designer to help us with the transition. Our realtor suggested Morgan and we engaged her based on her impressive design renderings and whole job fixed fee billing structure.
>
> It was clear that we would not be able to incorporate all our traditional furniture into the home style we purchased, but we were going to try to blend our favorite pieces. Morgan took pictures of all our Bethesda rooms and subsequently presented us with a visually creative master plan blending our traditional pieces with new transitional ones that we have gradually implemented over this past year.
>
> I have loved working with Morgan! She has that rare blend of being both creative and analytical. She created meticulous spreadsheets documenting our selections so we always knew where we stood financially. She is wonderfully creative with fabrics, resourceful in suggesting ways to save money, and has provided us with exceptional customer service.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Love the Countertop and backsplash** *(in Photo Questions)*

Love this kitchen! Could you please tell me what color and type the countertop and backsplash are? Thanks!

A: Thanks!

Countertop is white quartzite
Backsplash is Hampton Carrara large herringbone from the tile shop

**Q: Need help choosing a wooden mid-century bed** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am helping my sister furnish her apartment in mid-century style. While we agree on living room furniture, we are having trouble choosing furniture for the bedroom. I personally think the upholstered bed frames look really nice, but my sister prefers a light wooden bed frame (IKEA style) because she is looking for storage space under her bed, simplicity, and a warm inviting look. Does anyone have suggestions for a wooden bed frame that fits this description but will work with a mid-century style? (She is thinking of painting her bedroom a light color with a blue accent wall behind the bed.) Thanks in advance!

A: Upholstered bed can actually very much so be considered MCM! It's all about the legs in these ones.
I know your sister likes the wood, but if she's afraid of them looking to "dorm-room" then she may consider looking at upholstered as well.

**Q: Tell us: What home projects did you tackle in 2016?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

What did you knock off your to-do list? Are there any you are particularly proud of or that went terribly wrong? Any you want to show off?
Share your experience! (photos encouraged)

A: Finally did a project for myself and completely renovated my childhood home.
I'll warn you, the before photos are a bit scary: bit.ly/2gHLhtE

**Q: Kitchen hardware** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Is it best to mix cabinet pulls and knobs?

A: I think it is. It's an extra detail that doesn't take much effort but comes off as a custom upgrade. I would always recommend it and do that in all of my projects!
I would even suggest trying two different finishes if you're brave - like brass and matte black!

**Q: Finishing Basement -- Need design ideas** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We're finishing our 650-sq-foot basement and would love ideas/feedback, especially regarding tile flooring and paint. Our ideas thus far:
PURPOSE of basement -- Playroom and workout area.
LAYOUT - open space with one wall of closets. Plan to build closets -- with double doors -- the size of shelving units we already have. Furnace and sump pump areas will be closed in also.
FLOORING -- Plan to use faux wood floor tile. I prefer dark wood, but should we go with a light color wood tile b/c it's the basement? Will light color make it look brighter and bigger? Suggestions?
PAINT -- What colors make it look biggest? Is one color throughout best, or can we divide areas?
CEILING -- Sheetrock on side closest to stairs and drop ceiling on other side of Air Duct b/c of pipes. Will that look weird? We want the extra space where possible, but want access to pipes.
SUPPORT POLES -- Plant to cover with square columns.
STAIRS -- Plan to just carpet them and put simple banister, but would love any other ideas.
Any creative storage options i'm missing? Many thanks in advance!

A: This is super exciting! I just finished the design phase for my client who did something similar: family space for adults but also the kids playroom. I always recommend sticking to classic, more "adult" pieces for the large furniture items and then bringing in tons of color with the art, decor and storage. I love these spaces because it's an opportunity to create a fun space with unconventional colors and patterns without making it to kid theme-y.
As far as the layout it would be a goo idea to map out each section of the basement, rather than thinking of it as one big space. What needs to happen in each space?
Dark floors are gorgeous, but a lighter floor will reflect nicely off of the lighting and make it seem more warm. What are the floors in the rest of your house?
With paint, light colors will make the space seem bigger, but I think you definitely have room to include a darker or patterned accent wall.
And speaking of accents, it could be good to do something fun on the stairs. Like a painted stairway!
Covering the poles with square columns is a great idea. It can also help map out your different areas of the room.
I'll attach photos of the basement I just finished if that could help with your ideas at all. We created four separate areas: a tv/living area, a kid's craft area, an open play/toy area and my favorite part, a stage for the kids to perform!

It was all done through E-design, so I haven't seen the space in person. But we're ordering everything now and I can't wait to see everything installed.
