## Community Q&A

**Q: Waterproof Kitchen Flooring** *(in Flooring)*

Our basement kitchen floods several times a year. The current laminate floor has significant water damage and mold and we will be replacing soon. I’m looking for a kitchen floor that will be able to stand up to the flooding but is ideally not tile. Any recommendations?

A: Vinyl flooring, I normally use them in laundry rooms but I can recommend vinyl tiles which have nice patterns.

A: It is difficult to guess the flooring without seeing the actual material since color differ dramatically with lighting and screen type but it looks white oak with natural finish. I use a lot of European white oak for my designs which is very common in modern interiors like the one you shared. Hope this helps

**Q: Nursery Trim Color - Help!** *(in Polls)*

I thought I would ask the brilliant minds of the Houzz community for some advice on my child's nursery. I love the idea and look of colored moldings and trim but my husband is more of a traditionalist and thinks they should be white. Neither of us are afraid of color or pattern (clearly) so I think it's now down to the mercy of a poll.

A: Pictures always show focal point which is a part of the whole room. When we think about the whole room imagine all the other colorful toys, furniture and upholstery you’ll be adding to the room. So using white trims allows you to add different colors or change the style easily in the future.

**Q: Artwork and Area Rug dilemma...** *(in Home Decorating)*

I am renovating my entire main floor.  Husband inherited this HUGE piece of Venezualan art that he wants to hang in the living room space.  The art is 110"x54" and covers virtually the entire wall (see picture).  It is very vibrant - lots of colour and lots of movement.  Across from the art is my main living space (TV, couch, etc).  There is about 24' from the art to the opposite wall (see picture - I am taking the photo from the opposite wall) - so about 14' to the living room area rug.   My style is eclectic.  I love colour and am willing to mix and match colour, pattern, texture, etc.   I have other colourful artwork.  My couch and chairs are neutral (beige/taupe).   

I'm really torn between putting an area rug that with "interest" or putting a simple rug (likely one that is one of the blue tones of the big painting.  Ive included photos of "interesting" rugs Im considering.  Do you think it's too much? (Remember, I have other art.)   Thoughts?  Patterned and interesting or simple and subtle?

I dont want it to look like the circus came to town, but Im a fan of color/pattern...

A: I am an interior designer and artist and I have so many art pieces with vibrant colors just like yours.  The painting is absolutely beautiful and It will be your focal point in the place. If you chose rugs with patterns like the ones you shared the color balance and theme will be confusing to the eye. And your eyes won’t have any space to relax and go back to the focal point in the space which is your art again. You need resting points such as a carpet with muted colors and no patterns.

**Q: Super Susan vs Super Susan Pullout - pros, cons, experiences?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Looking for any pros/cons or experiences comparing a Super Susan Pullout vs a regular Super Susan.  Thanks in advance!

A: I agree with Hanson Carlen. As a designer I always use pull out or magic corner instead of rolling corners (super Suzan) so users can see everything at the same time instead of keep rolling the tray to find things in the dark cabinet. Hafele is one of the best brand and I highly recommend their products.
