### Reviews

**★★★★★ — Amy M, July 2025**

> We undertook a very significant renovation of our kitchen and made the best decision ever in hiring Designed By RL. After her initial consultation visit, Designed By RL's Rita Lezama presented us incredibly thoughtful design options personalized to meet our family's needs. She listened well and transformed our very basic ideas into renovation options we could never have imagined. The plan we ultimately chose involved taking down two load bearing/sheer walls and a small expansion. Designed by RL coordinated all the work, provided excellent counsel to us along the way, and helped us pivot when the inevitable complications arose. She reminded us it would all be worth it in the end, and did not allow us to panic or give up on our vision. The final outcome is a kitchen that is extraordinarily intentional. There is a place for everything and the organizational touches have not lost their value even 2 1/2 years after completion. The kitchen that was dark and small, is open and light. It is aesthetically beautiful and we were able to take risks by incorporating playful touches and colors. We love it so much and are endlessly grateful to Designed by RL for the time, effort, patience, and vision. She knew we could do so much better than our old kitchen, and she was absolutely right. You will not regret hiring Designed By RL!! We certainly have 0 regrets and only great appreciation.

**Comment from Designed By RL:**

> Thank you for your review, Amy. I am pleased that our collaboration produced a kitchen that works for everyone in the family. As you noted, it was a big undertaking that required a reimagining of the space. I know that, initially, the new layout created some concern since it's lack of upper cabinets appeared counterintuitive to maximizing storage. Despite this misgiving, I appreciate that you okayed the design and trusted me to create a more functional space that would also provide better storage. I hope you and your family continue to enjoy the kitchen for many years to come.

> My husband and I worked with Rita on three home remodel projects (master bathroom, kitchen, second bathroom, main floor fireplace, flooring throughout the house and a couple others). We loved working with her. She asked us how we wanted the space to work, then she presented us with two designs. She was spot on! We made a couple tweaks and love all the finished work. Her contractors were clean, reliable, and on time, and we trusted them being in our home when we were at work. She helped us select everything we needed for our project from paint color, to flooring to fixtures and door pulls, and counter tops. We appreciated that she was willing to meet us at the stores, and that made the process seamless. She was in contact with us, keeping us updated and dropped in to see the progress and meet with the contractors. We appreciated her attention to detail and her friendly personality. We have no more projects, but we would definitely hire her again.

**Comment from Designed By RL:**

> You and Doug were great collaborators! I appreciate that you knew what you wanted, but were open to new ideas. This synergy allowed us to create spaces that were uniquely yours. Thanks again for letting me work with you and for trusting me with your home.

**★★★★★ — Marci Crothers, March 2023**

> Rita was great to work with. Her design for our master bath incorporated our ideas & hers. I love my new bathroom! It went from outdated to modern and more functional.

**Comment from Designed By RL:**

> Hi Marci, Thank you for your comments. I am so happy that I was able to incorporate the ideas that are important to you and Charlie in the new space and that you love the functionality and style of the new bathroom.

**★★★★★ — Yuri, Jan. 2023**

> Rita has attention to detail and is knowledgeable. She is open minded and supportive so it was easy for us to work with her and tell her what we like or don’t like. It was fun to go through the process of refining the plan with her.
> She has great relationships with the contractor and vendors and communicates with them closely to ensure everything is aligned with the plan and schedule. When there were problems, she took action promptly and solved the problems. She places importance on making clients happy with the new space. Her professional work was carried throughout the project and we are very happy with our new kitchen and bathrooms. Thank you, Rita!

**Comment from Designed By RL:**

> Hi Yuri. Thank you so much for this review. I am so glad that I was able to give you a good experience during our collaboration. I hope you continue to enjoy the new kitchen and bathrooms.

**★★★★★ — Kevin and Beatrice, May 2022**

> Rita designed both our guest and master bathrooms over 10 years ago and we hired her again to update our kitchen. Rita is easy to work with and does a great job understanding our vision for the project and turning that into reality. She has an uncanny ability of thinking outside the box and taking our vision to a completely different level. All while being conscientious of our budget. We couldn’t be more pleased with the final results and can’t wait to have her help us on our next remodeling project!

**★★★★★ — esengendo, March 2022**

> We can't say enough about how much fun it was to work with RL Design! Rita was a dream come true. I wanted my laundry room, powder room and hallway to look large, open and so much more contemporary, my family and I are so in love with how fantastic all the spaces look so complete. We have worked with Rita on a previous kitchen remodel! her attention to detail, her vision and her follow-up are truly some of the hallmarks which helped us to transform our space into a new dimension. I would not hesitate to work with Rita and I encourage you to allow her to work with your home project and you will not be disappointed!

**Comment from Designed By RL:**

> Hi Juliet, thank you for this kind review and for seeking me out again to collaborate on your latest project. I've enjoyed working with you--the free exchange of ideas, questioning choices and finally coming to agreement--were exhilarating, challenging and so much fun. I love that you and Emmanuel were fearless with color. Together for Project 2.0, we created new spaces that meet your needs, reflect your personality and are one of
> kind. I hope they continue to bring you joy.

> Rita was instrumental in bringing the vision for our downstairs transformation into a reality. I initially selected her because her work was colorful, yet serene. As it turns out, she was a perfect match for us. We appreciated how detailed and organized she was throughout the project. Her communication was timely and we were always kept in the loop with everything. She was a lot of fun to shop and create with. Rita took the ideas and needs of our family and somehow made us all happy! We are enjoying the comforts and organization of our “new home” especially in these times when we are at home more often. She’s the best!

**Comment from Designed By RL:**

> Hi Michelle, your project was a fun collaboration. I am so happy to know that everyone is enjoying the transformation that we created together. More importantly, I am pleased that you enjoyed the design process and that I was able to fulfill both the functional and aesthetic requirements that make being home a joy.

**★★★★★ — Elyse, Dec. 2021**

> Rita's design plans transformed my family's life! We live in San Francisco and our kitchen and bathroom was a typical Victorian non-functional space for too many years than I would like to admit. Rita's special talent was not only to make our space beautiful but also functional. My kids can't stop talking about how "fancy" our kitchen and bathroom look now! I can't stop thinking about how easy it is to cook and clean :) We definitely can't wait to start hosting parties again. Thank you Rita for all your special attention to detail and what my family needed to feel we are fully able to live and enjoy our home!

**Comment from Designed By RL:**

> Thank you Elyse for giving me the opportunity to work with you. I am so happy that you and your kids find the new kitchen and bathroom to be both beautiful and functional. It's gratifying to know that you now find it easy to cook and clean because my primary design goal was to ensure that I incorporate the functional needs of everyone that will use the space. I hope you and your family enjoy your kitchen and bathroom for a long time to come.

**★★★★★ — Sara C., Feb. 2021**

> Rita is a wonderful designer! From the start, she listened to our ideas and made our vision a reality. Whenever we met at a showroom, she was already there, with various ideas laid out for us to make product choices. She was on top of all suppliers & deliveries. She gained the confidence of our contractor (who’d not worked with a designer before) which meant they spoke about some details without having to engage me for technical details! I really appreciated that, when I asked for Rita’s opinion on some options, she advised me without hesitation. When we ran into a few delays with products, Rita was the one to deal with the suppliers, representing us at every step.
> Rita was responsive to phone calls, texts, emails and often worked on tweaks and new details late into the night.
> We know Rita loves what she does; she was enthusiastic about every phase of the project.
> The results are fantastic!!!

**Comment from Designed By RL:**

> Thank you for your review. This was a fun project. I enjoyed the collaboration and happy that I was able to give Michael and you the space the you envisioned. I am glad that I gained Danny's trust and that he and I were able to resolve technical issues between ourselves. I look forward to future collaborations.

**★★★★★ — Niko H, Dec. 2020**

> Rita of RL Design does amazing work guys. I've worked with her for over 8 years now and have seen her walk clients through projects big and small from A - Z. If you need design consultation for any upcoming project RL is the way to go.

**Comment from Designed By RL:**

> Thank you for the review. I have enjoyed our working relationship and know that I can always rely on you to help me with my client projects. I look forward to our continued collaboration.

**★★★★★ — joy agc, Aug. 2020**

> We ended up buying the ugliest house on the block. A true blue fixer upper. Rita came in and saw the same beautiful house we had envisioned. She carefully drew our kitchen and bathroom designs and made the most unobvious design decisions that made the most practical sense.
>
> I appreciated her insight, humor, and the ability to pivot her design thoughtfully given our budgetary constraints. Thank you Rita.
>
> I loved her work so much I'll be working with her again on a very unfortunate kitchen rehab where we suffered fire damage in our condo rental unit. But, I fear not for I KNOW Rita will do a great job once again.

**Comment from Designed By RL:**

> Hidden underneath all the superfluous and outdated material was a jewel.I am so happy that we were able to transform your home to the vision that it has become. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with you and look forward to our next collaboration.

**★★★★★ — denise\_garner1, July 2019**

> Rita is a phenomenal designer and a pleasure to work with! I hired Rita to do a brand new design for my Master Bath and challenged her with a new element of adding a water feature. She had a great process of asking the right questions and exposing me to different ideas and design elements to get a sense of my preferences and worked it from there. Rita took me to numerous stone showrooms to pick surfaces and design elements where she had already prescreen options to help direct the process. As a designer I found her brimming with ideas, but not married to them if you wanted a twist. Perfect combo of creative yet flexible. Very focused on the customer! Prompt with work; easy to communicate with; very responsive; great relationship working with the contractor. All came together beautifully....we Love the end result!!!! I’d highly recommend Rita !!

**Comment from Designed By RL:**

> I enjoyed working on the project that we did together. It was a unique experience. I always strive to incorporate design elements that personalize the space for the client. However, in all the years that I've designed bathrooms, you were the only one to ask to incorporate a water feature. I am so pleased to know that you love the end result! Thank you again for letting me work with you.

In the future, should the homeowners desire to to change to a stackable washer and dryer, the shelves can be easily removed. Gray walls and black hexagon flooring further highlight t…

Green subway tiles, a free-standing tub, a larger shower and a backlit vanity mirror were must haves for the homeowner. Dark walls, black tiles and espresso colored vanity provide a moody effect. Sprinkles of white (the ceiling, the quartz countertop, the trough sink and the penny sized mosaic tiles) prevent the space from feeling cavelike. The wall-hung toilet adds to the l…

  - Description: The transformation of this home was accomplished with new paint, hard wood floors, carpets, stair railing, and lighting. Of these elements, paint provided the most impactful change. We used paint to highlight architectural details, lighten rooms and to update the kitchen. At the entry, a new door opens into an orange curved wall. This unexpected burst of color highlights the curvature of the stairs and provides a nice contrast to the greige walls. The oak kitchen cabinets were spruced up with gr…

  - Description: This new space feels more open and has a better flow. Central to the design is a tub that allows the homeowner to have a relaxing bathing experience. The new tub was positioned to allow the bather views of trees and sky; optionally, to watch shows on the TV that was positioned on the opposite wall. A partial wall at one end of the tub was removed to make room for a larger vanity. On the opposite side of the tub is a walk-in shower with a frameless enclosure. Rustic elements were introduced with…

  - Description: Functionally, the homeowner wanted her new bathroom to have no tub, a larger shower, more storage and better lighting. Aesthetically, she had two important requirements: to be transported to the beach and to hear the sound of water. The highlight of the design is a water feature. We incorporated it in the vanity area by furring out a part of the wall. This created the room's focal point highlighted with stacked stones and bracketed by full height mirrors with drilled through light fixtures. The…

  - Description: Like most guest bathrooms, this bathroom has a tub/shower combination. Unlike most bathrooms, this one has an 18" return wall on the vanity side that constrained vanity depth. The homeowners requested individual drawer space for their three young children and that the design style be timeless allowing it to grow with the kids. A 16" deep vanity and a wall hung faucet solved the wall constraint. Stained rustic cherry vanity combined with white subway tiles provide a timeless combination. Using mi…

Design elements were curated to ensure functionality and visual appeal. Mixing traditional and modern elements create a harmonious feel. - Description: The goal of this remodel was to create a kitchen that could hold large gatherings for family and friends. The existing layout was dysfunctional. Although the room was large, the cooking area was small and it lack storage space. More than half of the kitchen footprint was taken up by a huge island that was more a nuisance than functional. One wall was taken up by a fireplace that the homeowners didn't use. The new space is broken into activity centers: clean up area, cooking area, bar area, a cof…

  - Description: One of the reasons the homeowners wanted to update their guest bath was to be able to use part of the bathroom to enlarge the adjoining bedroom that they were converting into their new TV area. Of the remaining space, the homeowners asked that we create a bathroom that is guest worthy. To meet this challenge, we created a floor plan and used design elements to make guests feel welcome and to create the illusion of space. For visual impact, we installed a floating vanity with a vessel sink topped…

  - Description: Gone are the 80's cabinetry that provided neither storage nor functionality and the two tiered neo-angle island that severely constrained the work triangle and bisected the space. The new 10' island provides a lot of built-in storage, a bigger prep space and comfortably sits 6 people. It also allows the homeowner to spread out his newspaper as part of his daily morning ritual. We created a better work triangle and added perimeter cabinets with storage and functionality in mind. To achieve the ho…

She also wanted a better layout so that when her family was around, they could be in the kitchen with her. - Description: This project is an example of how a minor facelift can dramatically change the look and feel of a space. We kept the existing vanity, but painted it white. The cultured marble countertop was removed and replaced with a dark gray engineered quartz countertop. We replaced the undermount sink with a square vessel sink and matched it with a contemporary vessel filler. New mirror, lighting and modern chrome pulls complete the transformation.
