I currently have natural maple cabinets and natural maple floors. It has served us well but we are needing a change. I'm leaning towards white cabinets with a dark to medium floor or darker cherry cabinets and just refinish the light maple floors I have. Any suggestions A: If you are doing a complete remodel for your kitchen with brand new cabinets I would go with cherry in a clear coat finish (as cherry will darken with age) and also do flat panel inset doors. This looks fantastic and will look great for a long time. If you are wanting to do a face lift I would paint your existing cabinets with new doors and crown. If your budget allows you could also hire a cabinetmaker to fill the space above the existing cabinets with more cabinetry with glass doors and lighting. **Q: Kitchen countertops** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am going to replace the kitchen counters. Any thoughts on solid surface vs. granite vs. engineered stone? A: There are pros and cons to each. Granite can be inexpensive or expensive depending on the slab you choose and the company you chose. It also takes a lot to maintain (needs to be sealed at least once a year to prevent bacteria growth). Solid surface is a good affordable option though it does tend to look fake as it is technically a plastic material and you will have to be careful with heat. Quartz tends to be expensive but there is no maintenance involved. There is no risk of staining as it is non-porous and most of the colors mimic granite pretty well. **Q: Our new kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* Don't know whether to use granite or Quartz in a kitchen? A: Quartz is maintenance free which means you only need to clean with soap and water. Granite needs to be sealed every year (at least) in order to prevent any bacteria from forming in its pores as well as to reduce the risk of staining from things like red wine.
