I absolutely love living in my transformed house. Her design aesthetic and choice of materials is modern, earthy and timeless. She was wonderful to work with in every way. In their role as the architects, the also facilitated the entire process - including the planning, the permitting, and the construction phases. Both the final product and the process were excellent. In terms of the architectural design, Bo and Hisako worked to understand what we needed and how we lived in our house and then came up with a beautiful and functional design for the addition. They honored the traditional aspects of the existing house and seamlessly created a modern, open, bright addition. The main challenge of the project was building around some existing mature trees in our yard that we did not want to take down. The architectural plans really honored the trees and the beautiful deck they designed now wraps around a large magnolia tree which serves as a nice focal point from both the living room and the new bedroom. The attention to detail in the architectural design was amazing - we especially appreciate how much thought went into how a space will actually be used and lived in. And this is in addition to creating a beautiful space, both inside and out, that is fun to live in and to look at! I recommend Bunch Design in the strongest of terms. They were also super helpful with the process, accurate with budgets and timelines. They also stayed involved with the project until the very end - far past the end of the architectural design phase. They were involved in critical on the spot construction decisions and were excellent facilitators of the construction process. When we decided to add on to our house, we had no idea that the result would be so beautiful (and so functional) and we owe that entirely to Bo's and Hisako's vision. I highly recommend working with Bunch Design. **★★★★ — Beth Osterbauer, Feb. 2020** > We hired Bo and Hisako of Bunch design to help us with a full home remodel of a 3 bedroom/2 bath house in Atwater Village. We liked their design sensibilities and their history of similar projects, as well as their proximity to us. As first time home remodelers, Bunch was helpful in answering our questions and guiding us through the initial planning process, and we were consistently pleased with their work. The most significant issue that we had with Bunch pertained to cost. We provided Bunch a target budget at the beginning of the project, and hoped that the plans they designed for us would be achievable at that budget. Unfortunately once we began the bidding process with contractors, the quotes we received were far more than the target (up to double). Bunch did help us scale the design back, but we ended up having to make significant modifications with the contractor to try to wrestle the costs down. We relied heavily on Bunch for design and interior detail work as first-timers, but we felt that many of their suggestions were excessively costly and led to many hours of effort on our part hunting down more affordable alternatives. In the end, we are extremely happy with our home and the design elements that Bunch brought to the project. However, we would recommend a very firm upfront discussion about budget at the outset of a project. Times and clipped the story (yes, a paper copy of the Times!). Not only was the aesthetic of their house exactly what I was looking for, but what I really liked was their practicality about the way families actually live in their houses. When we finally called Bunch Design and had Bo come out and take a look at our weirdly designed 1952 ranch-style house, I was floored at how quickly Bo sized up the space and told me how they could open up the house and design a new kitchen and bathroom. He thought the project would take 3 months, which was critical because we had to stay in the house (with no kitchen) for the duration. Each unit is approximately 1400 sqft including work space directly connected to main living quarter.
