In an industry with cabinet showrooms on every corner and big boxes in between, Design First Kitchen and Bath's business model is a bit out of the ordinary. If you're considering a DIY remodel, partial DIY, or need 100% remodeling assistance, get the 'design first'. Answer all of your questions, from what goes where to how much will it cost. The company’s comprehensive approach encompasses consultation, design, material sourcing, and project management.

The process begins with a complimentary initial consultation to understand the client’s objectives and ideas. Following this, they develop detailed CAD and 3D designs, refining them in collaboration with the client to achieve the final plan. Throughout the remodeling phase, they maintain oversight to ensure alignment with the design and plans.

Trip, an NKBA-certified kitchen and bath designer, with years of design experience, is an extreme planner, over-thinker, and predictor of the future.
(like, you are going to wish you had a trash pull-out over here).

Design is a “process” that is most productive when the homeowner and the designer work closely together. It is just impossible to do too much prior planning. After reviewing every detail of the design and cabinetry features, the layout and flow of your area, and every particular little detail for the cabinets, the customer then has 3D renderings in hand and all of your next moves can be achieved.

We are known as the "Designers Without Borders". Many of our clients have had us visit their "other home" or referred us to their family members in other cities!

After these important details are complete the "what's next" phase of the remodeling project kicks in.
One choice available would be to move forward on your project with Sheri Butler at Design First. Sheri's specialty is sourcing and organizing all of the remodeling. From cabinets, and contractors to tile, painting, and plumbing fixtures. Whether you are using your contractor, other affiliated trades, Sheri will help you create a remarkable interior design. While keeping the job organized and timely.

Clients have praised DFKB for their expertise, patience, and dedication. One testimonial highlights their guidance through a complete kitchen and main-level remodel, noting their top-notch capability and expert advice on architectural design choices.

> Our experience with Design First Kitchen and Bath was fabulous. Sheri and Trip, the owners, expertly guided us through a complete kitchen and main-level remodel from beginning to end, and we absolutely love the results!!!
>
> From the moment we met them, it was evident that their capability was top notch. They took the time to understand our vision and provided expert advice on architectural design choices. They guided us on the selection of all materials and services. We decided on the removal of a wall, installation of new cabinets, granite countertops, appliances, hard wood flooring, and a large central island. We did a total remodel and love our new house.
>
> All interactions were always in a friendly and professional manner. Sheri and Trip were proactive, keeping us informed at every step. Their responsiveness and thoroughness made the whole process work smoothly. We made several fun trips together to design centers. Sheri is a pro at helping to pick the right materials, designs and colors!
>
> Design First helped us select all excellent tradespeople. They helped us across the board, from electrical to HVAC, flooring to railings, and demolition, painting, construction. Hats off!
>

> A Remodel Done Right – On Time and On Budget!
> If you’re considering a remodel and want a design team that truly elevates your space, I highly recommend Design First Kitchen & Bathroom (DFKB).
>
> Their “design-first” philosophy (and name) sets them apart. Before we did any construction, they ensure your vision is fully realized. Trip does wonders with the physical layout and then Sheri transforms it from a space to a home. Her eye for color, fabrics, and tile is exceptional, and she has a rare ability to blend aesthetics with functionality. She transformed our kitchen, dining room, powder room, and owner’s bath into vibrant, relaxing spaces that feel custom-tailored to our lifestyle.
>
> DFKB doesn’t just create beautiful designs - they manage the process seamlessly. Even when we couldn’t be onsite, Sheri acted as our proxy, handling adjustments with confidence and ensuring every detail aligned with our vision. If you value creativity, professionalism, and a stress-free experience, DFKB is the team to trust.

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Thank you Chris, it was a real delight to work with you and Carin. The project turned out beautifully.

**★★★★★ — HU-35195790, May 2025**

> We are so thrilled with our new owners suite, thanks to Sheri and Trip Butler! Trip designed the new layout, and Sheri helped with design and finishes to transform three small bedrooms and two very small bathrooms into a spa-like bath retreat, a very large and comfortable bedroom, and a beautiful, spacious closet. Sheri and Trip were very easy to work with, listening to what we wanted and offering creative design tips to enhance the finished project. The general contractor, subcontractors, and vendors coordinated by Sheri were all professional, punctual, and perfectionists. We are so lucky to have had Sheri and Trip help us through the entire process from start to finish! We will highly recommend Sheri and Trip Butler’s Design First Kitchen and Bath to all our family and friends!

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Thank you for the wonderful review. We had so much fun working with you two. We too love the outcome! Enjoy!

> Sheri and Trip took my home through a redesign of my kitchen and two bathrooms. They do it all, but they also let me lead what I wanted to lead. Their technical work was spot on, and working with Sheri on the design was so pleasant because of her patience and knowledge. They are partners from beginning to the very last check on the checklist gets marked off. Thank you both for helping me into what feels like a new home!

**★★★★★ — Claire Sebesta, Sept. 2024**

> Sheri and Trip supported us with a major DIY kitchen remodel through cabinet selection and design as well as giving successful recommendations for contractors who could do the jobs we couldn't do. I appreciate all they did for us!

**★★★★★ — Bill Jorgensen, Feb. 2023**

> Sheri and Trip Butler are good, experienced people. They work closely with you so that you get the kitchen (in our case) you really want. They have great ideas to consider. Sheri is a good project manager, lining up contractors, setting dates, and making sure everything comes together. Sheri is a great advocate in terms of vendors and suppliers. Finally, they are really easy to work with. They truly want things to work out the way you want it.

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> We sure enjoyed doing your kitchen, Bill. I know that you and Patty and the entire family have made it feel like home already! Thanks again!

**★★★★★ — ferreyro12, Feb. 2023**

> They went above and beyond to make our remodel both easy and beautiful!! A big thank you to both Tripp and Sheri!

**★★★★★ — L D, Dec. 2021**

> Sheri and Tripp were extremely helpful in letting us see the vision of what our kitchen project could become. They had ideas that we would have never thought of left to our own devices. They steered us toward a group of professionals who were real craftsman and did an amazing job on our design. Sheri and Tripp listen to your vision and lifestyle making your home fit your needs and wants. They were very prompt about addressing any issues, prompt with answering questions and always got back to us within the day, if not within the hour. We enjoyed working with them.

**★★★★★ — Nick Capron, June 2020**

> We hired Design First Kitchen and Bath to design a major kitchen remodel and we are very pleased.. We removed a wall which opened up the whole back of the house and moved most of the kitchen into the old dining room. Trip and Sheri made this daunting project a success. Trip factored in our desires and added his expertise and artistic sense which avoided lot of pain later. He was meticulous in every detail (for example: ensuring the kitchen faucet was exactly centered in a new window). Sheri was invaluable in resolving our issues with the major vendors. Really glad we hired this team!

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Thank you Nick! It was a pleasure to see the project come together, even with COVID! A beautiful kitchen and home to stay safe in! Cheers ~

**★★★★★ — Cristine Valenti, Nov. 2019**

> What started out as a small remodel expanded very quickly and Sheri and Trip hung in there with us. They were patience and listened to our ideas, carefully steering us in the right direction. We are very pleased with the end results. They were a great resource for the different trades that were used through out the project and we will probably continue to use them in the future. We would recommend Sheri and Trip to anyone considering construction in the home

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Cris, It was such a pleasure to work with you. Your house is absolutely beautiful.
> Thank you so much.

**★★★★★ — Cynthia Hope, Sept. 2018**

> Trip designed our kitchen remodel and we are thrilled with the results. During the planning stages, he re-worked and tweaked our design numerous times until we were satisfied. Both Sheri and Trip offered suggestions, stayed involved, followed up and responded to any and all questions and problems we encountered. Their recommendation for a general contractor was outstanding and added to a smooth and problem free remodel. We look forward to many more years in our 40 year old home and thank DESIGN FIRST KITCHEN AND BATH for the attention to detail and personal service they excel at offering.

**★★★★★ — Sandy Buechler, Dec. 2017**

> We hired Design First Kitchen and Bath for a major kitchen remodel. The remodel included removal of a wall to combine a kitchen and dining room to create a spacious kitchen. I am not good at visualizing and I could not have created the wonderful workspace that Trip and Sherri have created for us. When Trip and Sherri asked us what we wanted in our space we had no idea so I started scouring books and creating bits and pieces with pictures and they were there to help us fit things together . They were there for any questions (and inspirations) we had and they guided what fit. They took us through the project in steps and prioritized the steps so we weren't overwhelmed with all the decisions. Trip and Sherri are wonderful to work with and always considered our input as important and our budget was a top concern throughout the whole process. Their visions, thoughts and inspirations have created the kitchen of my dreams. Trip and Sherri, thank you for never thinking our input was insignificant and for creating such a beautiful space. I would definitely hire again.

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Sandy, Thank you so much for working with us, your review here on HOUZZ and your recommendation of our services to your friends! Your job will always be one of our favorite.

**★★★★ — Brad Hablutzel, Feb. 2017**

> Trip is customer centric! You won't find a more courteous wanting to help individual, and he helped us at a bargain of a price! I'm stretching to find anything I'd change but if I did I'd say that some of the measurements were wrong on the 1st draft which if we didn't double check would have resulted in us ordering a lot of inventory that wouldn't fit. That was probably our fault because we asked Trip for a template/design on quick turnaround and never gave him the chance to come back to verify measurements. We really didn't know what we were doing and Trip was so patient with us changing our minds a lot. Thanks a million Trip!

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Thanks Brad,
> Rest assured, i would never let you order anything without doing a final measure. I'd really love to get photos of the finished project. I have a feeling that your new basement will be perfect for your vision of the future.

**★★★★★ — jen arthur, Sept. 2016**

> We used Design First Kitchen and Bath to update our basement - adding cabinets as part of an entertainment center. Trip was extremely helpful in the design as the space was a challenge. The cabinets are wonderful, and the project was 100% on target with our goals and expectations.

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Jen, Thank you so much for not only your business but the nice review. I look forward to working with you on your next project!

**★★★★★ — Christine Hample, Sept. 2016**

> I worked with Trip on the design of my custom kitchen and bathrooms, as well as laundry room and wet bar. His design was completely accurate and everything I had envisioned. The function of the kitchen has made preparing, cooking and storage effortless. He came in exactly on budget. True professional- I'd use him again.

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Thank you Christine. Working with you to create your vision was inspiring. I look forward to the next project!

**★★★★★ — mrsbbfire, Aug. 2015**

> We just finished remodeling out Master Bath with Trip. the process was seamless and the bath is beautiful. I would highly recommend Trip and plan to use him if I ever get to remodel my kitchen!!

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Thank you Barb. It was a pleasure working with you and Michael and I am going to put some photos of the finished product on Houzz. It really came out great.

**★★★★★ — kstevenson13, May 2015**

> The most beautiful Kitchen and Bath remodel with dark brown, knotty Alder cabinets - perfect for my Breckenridge mountain condo! The designer made sure that all of the cabinets would fit correctly and that the storage space was maximized in this small kitchen. The cabinet color matches perfectly with my unit doors and trim. The skiers that rent my condo all love it and I do too! Everything was handled in a professional, timely manner with no problems.

**★★★★★ — dgarrett56, Feb. 2015**

> I contacted Design First Kitchen and Bath with respect to two remodel projects in Breckenridge, Colorado.
>
> Both units are short term rental units and we had a small window in which to complete the total renovations of all four full bathrooms.
>
> Mr. Butler (Trip) came to the projects. He made suggestions regarding Cabinets, their sizes, finishes, and even recommended a Marble counter top fabricator. The whole project was completed on time, on budget, and to my 100% satisfaction.
>
> I will definitely use Design First Kitchen and Bath and for future projects!

**★★★★★ — User, Jan. 2015**

> Trip Butler, owner of Design First Kitchen and Bath, is a gifted design professional who efficiently carries a project from beginning to end. Trip worked on a kitchen remodel for me, updating an original 1980s mess to a beautiful and functional, simple and extremely workable space. His professional background in design, architecture and construction gives him the unique ability to understand the complete process, thereby avoiding most of the on-site installation headaches that often come with these types of projects. I can highly recommend Trip for both his professional expertise and his delightful personality!!

**★★★★★ — Design One Interiors, Jan. 2015**

> I have worked with Trip Butler on several kitchen and bath projects over the years. Trip is very skilled and attentive to my design objectives when we work together to create inspirational cabinetry for kitchens and bathrooms for my clients. These creations are classically beautiful and of solid design and function. Trip works diligently to help me in my efforts to create great lifestyle cabinetry design within time and cost budgets. He provides his expertise and advice based on his years of experience in the industry and I would highly recommend his services.

**★★★★★ — shelker7, Jan. 2015**

> I worked with Trip from Design First in remodeling 4 bathrooms in an existing home. Trip has great insight into options for homeowners to choose from. He also offers a wide range of design, detail, and finish ideas and is good-humored and easy to work with. Some rearranging of the existing layout was necessary in each of the rooms that were remodeled. Upon completion and according to Trip's design, the spaces were streamlined and well-utilized, making more sense for the homeowners' needs. With Trip's vision and expertise in his field, the bathrooms were transformed from everyday 'facelifts' into spaces one desires to live in. I would highly recommend using Trip as a design expert for kitchen and bath needs and will use him in my own home when the needs arise.

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Thank you for your comments. The clients could not have been more pleased with you and your level of professionalism and skill. I posted a few photos from that project, but I may reach out to a professional photographer for this one to help capture the full flavor.

**★★★★★ — User, Jan. 2015**

> When I bought my patio home I thought the very first thing to go would be the kitchen, however it turned out that the master bathroom was unlivable. The sliding door for the master shower was less than 2ft wide. I contacted Design First Kitchen and Bath to help me achieve this small but crucial job.
> With a radiant heated floor for warmth, ceramic tile and glass trim. The smoke glass shower enclosure adds to the privacy for this small but intimate master bathroom.
>
> Working with Trip Butler, the designer was a delight, it was completed in a timely and professional manner.
> I will be using Design First Kitchen and Bath for the Kitchen soon.

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Thank you so much. You picked out some beautiful features and fixtures. Now, about that kitchen .....

**★★★★★ — jgpcom1, Jan. 2015**

> I hired First Kitchen and Bath to update the four bathrooms in our house. For me, the most important aspects were:
> 1\. Help in selecting a good quality cabinet company and help in selecting finishes.
> 2\. Help in selecting a superior Contractor - This is vital to a quality, on - time project. I didn't know that conscientious, quality work and on - time contractors existed today.
> 3\. Attention to detail - The owner was on hand to check that each cabinet ordered was delivered by the trucking company. The one missing item from the list of materials was shipped promptly and did not affect the project time line.

**★★★★★ — Mountain Life and Home of Colorado, Dec. 2014**

> It was goid working with Trip on this project. He was a good communicator and worked with us as both builder and designer to keep the project in budget and still looking terrific.

**Comment from Design First Kitchen and Bath:**

> Thank you so much. Your project was inspiring to work on, we enjoyed the process.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Do you design both kitchens and bathrooms?**
Yes, we absolutely design both kitchens and bathrooms! Our company name, Design First Kitchen and Bath, reflects our core expertise. My partner, Trip, specializes in layout and architectural design, while I, Sheri, focus on the aesthetic details and material sourcing for both spaces. We've successfully transformed numerous kitchens and bathrooms, creating functional and beautiful results for our clients.

**Do you specialize in a particular design style or kind (modern, contemporary, luxury)?**
We don't specialize in one particular design style; instead, we excel at understanding your unique vision and lifestyle to create a custom-tailored space. Whether you prefer a contemporary, farmhouse, traditional, or log mountain home aesthetic, we blend functionality with your desired style. Our goal is to make your home feel uniquely yours, reflecting your personal taste.

**Do you provide full-service design or design-only plans?**
We offer both full-service design and design-only plans. Our 'design-first' philosophy means we can provide you with comprehensive CAD plans and 3D renderings (Phase 1) that you can use with your own contractors or for a DIY project. Alternatively, you can choose our full-service option (Phase 2), where we also assist with material sourcing and project management, acting as your liaison throughout the remodel.

**How are your design fees structured?**
Our design fees are structured on a design retainer model for Phase 1, which covers the creation of your detailed CAD plans and 3D renderings. We always begin with a complimentary initial consultation to discuss your vision, needs, and budget before any commitment. Any project monitoring or liaison services in Phase 2 are an additional, valuable service.

**Do you create optimized layouts for small or challenging spaces?**
Absolutely! We pride ourselves on creating optimized layouts for even the most challenging or small spaces. My partner, Trip, is an extreme planner with over 25 years of construction experience, ensuring every detail, from cabinet fit to maximizing storage, is meticulously considered. We transform layouts to be streamlined and highly functional, making the most of your home.

## Community Q&A

**Q: which cabinet style are these? and paint color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Are these Bridgewood Windom? Full overlay?

A: I see that i have mis-identified these cabinets. They are actually full overlay Waypoint Cabinets. and

**Q: Pendant lighting.** *(in Photo Questions)*

What's the make/model of the pendant lighting?

A: I'm sorry, but I do not know. The homeowner found them herself.

**Q: Countertop material?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I think the contrast between the countertop color and cabinets is spot on. I know there are a million color/material combinations, but can you tell me is this quartz or granite? Is there a way to pin down the supplier and what they call this material?

Thanks, Joe

A: The material is Quartz, the customer was the remodeling contractor. Quartz is a man made product and the colors are consistent store to store, you should be able to eye-ball it.

**Q: Cabinet color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What color are your cabinets? They are just so beautiful!!!

A: Thank you. These are Bridgewood Cabinets (Advantage). The stain is Salem Maple with a chocolate glaze. The homeowner picked out some nice touches and although the kitchen is still not quite finished (and the photo doesn't really do it justice), I like the way the glaze compliments the dark streaks in the granite.
