Chuckanut Builders is a Bellingham based general contractor and custom home builder with a focus on high-performance building. Our favorite projects include major residential remodels, custom new homes and tenant improvement projects. The vast majority of our projects are in the city of Bellingham’s although we do work in all of Whatcom & selective Skagit County locations

All of our projects include major building performance updates because we believe everyone deserves a home that is healthy, durable, comfortable and beautiful. We've built a crew of building nerds who love nothing more than making homes work better. A home that works better means you won't have to wear slippers in December because your home is heated evenly all year; the air in your house is always fresh and free of pollutants because of adequate ventilation; and you don't have to worry about failing siding or mold in your walls because your homes building envelope is weather resistive.

Let's work together to remodel or build a house that does more for you, a home that is healthier, more comfortable and more durable.

### Reviews

**★★★★★ — HU-268533635, Oct. 2023**

> In 2022, Chuckanut Builders (CB) completed a remodel of our old home in the Fairhaven Neighborhood in Bellingham, WA. We presented CB with a house plans drawn by Brewster Design/Build, and after meeting with us, we all agreed to sign a contract and proceed. We also worked with a very talented and helpful interior designer who made the kinds of decisions CB leaves to the client (light fixtures, trim style, etc.).
>
> What did we like about CB? What didn't we like?! We appreciated their transparency and accounting of all the expenses. They track it with a software program that they shared with us through the entire remodel. This helped us track the costs and watch the progress. In addition, we had weekly meetings onsite where we provided them with material selections, reviewed the work, discuss small design changes, and problem solved when needed. They handled the whole process with professionalism and good humor, which goes a long way in a remodel!
>
> The workmanship, including that of the subs they use, resulted in a well-done remodel that meets all our needs. We feel very fortunate to have had CB for our remodel. We really couldn't be happier!

> Chuckanut Builders is a professional firm, who is very thorough and pays attention to detail. They are knowledgeable about building in the Pacific Northwest. Their work quality is excellent. Our project was time and materials, and they were near their estimated costs.
> We felt they could have used their time more efficiently, which would lower costs and projects would be finished within deadlines.

**Comment from Chuckanut Builders:**

> Hi Joanne, We are always striving to improve our systems and processes and your honest feedback will help us do that. Thank you!

**★★★★★ — A Shannon, Aug. 2019**

> This bedroom addition was my first project of this size and with a construction company. Everything was new! YIKES! From start to finish Chuckanut was on a highly professional level.
> \- A clear walk through of contract parameters
> \- Weekly meeting with project manager
> \- Access to Buildertrends website for information and messaging
> \- Labor shows up when they say they will
> \- Lead carpenter was always available to quickly answer questions
> \- Subcontractors held similar high values and held accountable for work
> \- Workers had great attitudes and great taste in music!

**Comment from Chuckanut Builders:**

> Thank you! We really appreciate the feedback and I'll pass on the message to Adam that you appreciated his choice in music! ;)

**★★★★★ — Dina Dickerson, July 2019**

> If I can tell you one thing about Chuckanut Builders, it would be that they produce high quality work using A-list professionals. We are so glad we chose them to work with us to build our pre-paneled eco-home. We enjoy the workmanship every day.

**Comment from Chuckanut Builders:**

> Thank you Dina! We're so glad that you're happy with your new home and we're excited to see how the landscaping evolves and grows!

**★★★★★ — Anna Dowling, Oct. 2018**

> We did a major renovation of an almost 100 year-old home with Chuckanut Builders while we were living in the home and we can honestly say it was PAINLESS!!! Not only are they very talented craftsmen but also unbelievably neat and tidy and extraordinarily professional. We felt very well-informed every step of the way and the project totally stayed on budget. Oddly enough we actually missed them a little bit the first few days after the renovation was complete!

**★★★★★ — Michael E. Smith FAIA, Aug. 2018**

> As an architect, what I really appreciate about Chuckanut Builders is that they are collaborators. They go beyond simply reading plans - they understand the big picture, the concept, the vision.
> Then they work with me and the client to exceed everyone's expectations. Highly recommended!

**★★★★★ — Jane Bright, July 2017**

> We were apprehensive about building a new house on a tricky lot, but Chuckanut Builders made it happen in spectacular style. They took our architect's plans and made them a reality adding so much attention to detail and creative solutions. We enjoyed the Chuckanut team and the process and have a gorgeous, top notch energy-efficient custom home that works beautifully for us.

**Comment from Chuckanut Builders:**

> Thank you for your thoughtful comments Jane! Your home is certainly a showcase project for Chuckanut Builders and we're so glad you chose us for to build your new home.

**★★★★★ — rebirthingyoga, Feb. 2017**

> Chuckanut Builders remodeled my yoga studio beautifully and finished on time and on budget! I loved working with this team so much, I'm going to have them remodel my house. Excellent communication, high quality work and eco-conscious.

**★★★★★ — senzasord, Sept. 2015**

> We hired Chuckanut Builders to do a "down to the studs" renovation of the second floor of our house, along with comprehensive energy upgrades. They did a fantastic job and I would not hesitate to recommend them or hire them again.
>
> Every one of their employees we worked with was friendly, courteous, thoughtful, and committed to doing good work and getting the job done right. Chuckanut made a schedule and stayed close to it throughout, even when a few complications arose.
>
> We especially appreciated their dedication to sustainable and environmentally friendly building practices, and we appreciated that they went to extra efforts to leave the job site clean on Fridays so we could explore the work over the weekend.
>
> The finished product, almost a year later, still looks great and makes us happy. I think their motto is something like, "Committed to the community, committed to the craft" and they're succeeding at both.

**★★★★★ — clauduf, April 2015**

> Chuckanut Builders renovated our kitchen in the summer of 2014. They were responsive, organized, and ensured that the subcontractors were timely with their respective jobs. The onsite supervisor, Mike, was a pleasure to work with and worked diligently to ensure no detail was missed. We would recommend them without hesitation.

**★★★★ — brickthomas, Jan. 2015**

> We found Chuckanut Builders insulation team to be professional, easy to work with and they took measures to keep the house clean. It was also nice to work with contractors that started each morning on time, were easy to talk to and kept us informed on the projects progress . The only bump in the road we hit was the starting date bounced around a bit but once they started they did a great job. We would hire them again without question.

**★★★★★ — Molly Maguire Landscape Architecture, May 2014**

> I have had the pleasure to work with Chuckanut Builders on two projects this past year. They are great communicators, extremely detail oriented, and knowledgeable of their craft. Both Ian and Forest can quickly provide feedback on building related issues concerning costs, efficiency, aesthetic, and importantly ecological sustainability. They are passionate about their work. They have built strong relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and design consultants and really offer an unparalleled team approach to their projects. They are also excellent listeners. I am grateful to work with them, and recommend them highly.

 - Description: This was one of those projects where everything just clicked – the team, the vision, the transformation. The house itself had great bones: a classic 1920’s Colonial with a carriage house and a killer view. But after years of random renovations, the layout didn’t really make sense anymore, especially for a family that loves to cook and entertain. Working with Adair Orr of Armadillo Design Lab and the Lisa Staton Interior Design team, we helped rework the flow completely – moving the kitchen and m…

 - Description: This lot, with its gorgeous views of Bellingham Bay, was the perfect spot for a young and growing family to build their dream home. The original mid-century house was carefully moved to a nearby site, where it now serves another family. At the heart of the new home is a light-filled chef’s kitchen and great room. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms; downstairs, a guest suite offers space for extended family. A flexible office and bonus room add versatility, while the spacious garage supports an a…

 - Description: We were thrilled to partner again with some of our favorite return clients on this extensive remodel. Set on a sensitive shoreline site, the project called for both care & creativity. To protect the home from storm surge damage (and meet FEMA requirements), the existing structure was raised several feet and carefully shifted away from the shore. This major undertaking will give the home a strong, safe foundation for years to come. From there, the design team introduced a bold new entry that make…

 - Description: Sometimes a project comes along that the crew really wants to work on. The client is amazing, its in a great location, the design elements are interesting, and it desperately needs an update! This bungalow on Chuckanut Drive had good bones and tons of potential and yes, was in desperate need of modernization! Our crew – guided by the sophisticated taste of our client & design team – reimagined, gutted, cleaned, and fully updated the space. It now glows with natural light, accentuating the herrin…

 - Location: Bellingham, WA
 - Photos: 19
 - Description: This house is literally a hidden gem. It is tucked into a small, private ravine on Samish Hill; surrounded by towering firs and giant sword ferns, the location is perfect. This house itself was something of a diamond in the rough when our clients bought it but they realized with the right team they could make it something special. The first step was to bring in Michelle Banks of Spiral Studios. She worked her magic and, as you can see, turned the primary floor into a stunning showpiece.

The clients for this project were interested in maintaining the historic character of their home, while also increasing the functionality of the kitchen. The first step in any project is planning. - Description: We love repeat clients. Clients know what to expect, they understand our systems and the early groundwork of building relationships is done. This was one of those projects. In early 2016 Amy Robinson, the owner of 3 Oms Yoga Studio, hired us to remodel the new 3 Oms space. A year later she contacted us to remodel her family’s kitchen and bathroom. The original layout was…awkward. The bathroom was off of the kitchen, there were 6 doorways leading into and out of the kitchen and it was tiny to boo…

It’s worth mentioning that the home was built in the late 1990’s, had pink granite throughout the house (eww!) and the siding was failing. The primary goals were to remodel the kitchen, dramatically increase the building performance of the house, update the interior and exterior, and add another bedroom. The main players for this project were Arbor North Architecture, \[bundle\] design studio who served a building perfor…

We can't emphasize enough how much the view changed! We replaced one of the tiny corner windows with an eight foot window to allow for views of Bellingham Bay and sunset. This also dramatically increase the amount of natural light in the kitchen. The first step of this project was to bring in Michelle Bank, who works as a designer for Smith and Vallee Wood…
