**Q: Thinking of a change to white HELP** *(in Paint)*

I have always loved a white kitchen and white counter tops. I have lived with these dark cabinets for a few years. I want to update the kitchen without going thru the process of starting all over. Would I make a mistake to paint the dark to white or  and change counter tops as well. Is white out of style  now?

A: Keep in mind that repainting cabinets reduces the durability. New factory finished lacquered cabinets are the best. That said if you decide not to repaint them you could change out your counters to a white quartz with some veining. Do the back of the range in the same material and thee backsplash in a white tile. Finally paint the upper walls in white and remove all the decorations. Another option is to paint the upper cabs or just the range hood. Good luck.

**Q: Need thoughts on basement bar countertop** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Walls are light warm gray (natural gray) floor is a light gray tile with warm shades. Cabinets are dark wood maybe blue undertones. Pendants are black and brass. Thinking either gray marble or a white marble. Other suggestions welcome.

A: Marble is porous, it will stain (red wine) and etch from cleaners and acidic liquids (lemons, limes ect..) Its the curse and joy of an authentic material. Some people invite the patina but others do not. If you want a low maintenance material quartz would be a great solution. There is some porosity in this material too so do your homework before you choose. i have a very white quartz in my kitchen (6yrs) and don't have any permanent stains. As for your backsplash, you could wrap he counter material up the wall, it would look fantastic.

**Q: Rug placement advice** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We would like to put a rug in the sitting area during the winter for cosiness.  We have been considering a made-to-measure darker grey with a pile that gives some light and shade and there is an option to add a suede border measuring anything up to 10cm.  We don't want to chop the room in half and would welcome advice on the placement of the furniture on the rug to help us estimate the size needed.  Will it make the room look smaller if the rug edges skim the front of the sofa and the chairs but sit under the chaise or should all the furniture sit on the rug?  We are wary of 'chopping the room in half' if the rug is too big.  Also we cannot place the rug directly up to where the wood burner is for safety. The seating does not have 'feet' as you can see by the photos.  The area is actually larger that it looks in the photos.  Advice would be welcome.

A: The conventional way of laying a rug will not work here because of your fireplace and seating arrangement requirements. Have you considered a cowhide? The irregular shape will work here plus its nice and flat to the floor if only one leg of the chair is on it. It will add texture and a bit of warmth and will not cut off the room. If you decide to go with a smaller typical rug, keep it close to the same colour as the floor so it doesn't cut the room. Thats all I have.

**Q: Kitchen (Re)Design Advice Please!** *(in Remodeling)*

So I've changed directions on my kitchen remodel and have decided to go with a galley style where the island will serve as prep/sink/dishwasher station which will be located directly behind the main cooking wall. With this layout, I'll have a 36" induction cooktop and I'm undecided on whether to center the cooktop/hood or offset it closer to the ovens. I'm leaning towards offsetting b/c of how the uppers work out but I'd love to hear advice from those with experience. It will also affect how I decide to position my sink in the island which is undecided at this point as well. But in the island, it makes sense to me to have the dishwasher as far away from the refrigerator as possible to avoid conflict. Also, I haven't figured out my lowers yet so advice on that is welcome as well as any other thoughts/advice. Thanks!

A: Good job! I think you are correct about the fridge and DW.,and yes offset your sink, its nice to have lots of counter-space on the island.

**Q: Great Room** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Please help! Trying to finish putting this room together and I feel something needs to go in the corner behind the couch....maybe corner shelving? Just not sure. Any suggestions would be helpful

A: Chad, I would go with a solid colour on the drapes as you have pattern in pillows and the rug.  I like the way this room is shaping up, adding additional pattern will take it in a different direction. If you do decide on a pattern choose something with a smaller print so the rug and drapes don't get into a big fight.

**Q: Kitchen Back Splash Ideas?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Kitchen and home are contemporary. Would like to add interest without having it be too busy. Client is open to all ideas. 
\- Client would like "something fun" for behind the stove.

A: Go simple and white. There is enough going on and a "fun" backsplash will be too much. One needs a place to rest the eye.
