Our experience with Whelan was difficult, frustrating and huge waste of our time and money. They lack integrity, transparency, communication and were extremely high priced. Their customer service is very poor, they do not listen to their customer and refused to provide detailed cost for our contract. > We tried twice (2021 and 2025) to work with MJ Whelan for our home remodel which consisted of 3 additions: new first floor master suite, entertainment room with bathroom and front porch addition but ran into issues both times. We were unable to get to a signed contract. The first time in 2021, we provided prints but they came in with a price that was crazy high (thought maybe due to Covid) so we shopped around. We had some of the work done by another company then came back to Whelan (2025) to requote. After paying them $8400 for new "sketches" (not even CAD or construction prints) with minor changes to our original drawings, they actually tripled the price!! Unbelievable! We asked them to see what they could do to reduce the cost and all they did was take out content or lower product quality (windows, siding, cabinets, etc.). Ironically, the prices weren't reducing. It's like they played the shell game. They didn't listen or hear us. They did what they wanted. We would tell them what we wanted, then they'd come back with something different. And all this with no detailed costs to work with.We kept getting back total numbers and cost TBDs (cost to be determined)! We were so frustrated. We tried for 7 months only to end up with nothing. We decided to cut our losses $8400 and 7months and walked away.We thought, If it was this difficult to get a contract signed we didn't have any confidence or trust the building experience would be any better! > Either MJWhelan got greedy due to covid or grew too fast and can't manage the business. After 2 months of no progress we terminated the relationship but he would not refund any of the money. Their representative came out promptly for a consultation-- which went very well. He seemed to get and be excited by the project-- custom shelving throughout the room and a coiffured ceiling to create a warm family reading room. He said he would be back with me on pricing and preliminary design ideas within a week. We spoke of timing-- how long would it take to do the actual project (he estimated 4-6 weeks) and what the schedule was like (doable within the end of this year). Well into the second week with no word from him-- I sent an email and called. He wrote back and said he was swamped and needed more time for pricing-- and by the way, the design dept was backed up too. Another week went by and he wrote stating that the design department was backed up over 4 weeks and "by the way" I would have to pay $750 for a design drawing. And he wanted to know if I still would like him to work on pricing? I politely declined-- with the feedback that 3 weeks later-- he was giving me information he should have at the time of the initial consultation: long delay in even getting an estimate, long delay in even getting a design, AND a nonrefundable $750 just to see what they would propose to do!!! For a set of custom shelves and ceiling work in a single average sized room. NO THANK YOU-- BAD information TOO LATE.
