I want these floors as light as possible because the house is quite dark. A: I agree with lefty47. The color of the floor has nothing to do with light relativity. Invest in some good lighting and paint colors if lightening your room is your main issue. If you keep the walls across from the window light in color you will have better success. If you post a picture of the entire room than I can give you some more suggestions to lighten up the room. I think the others who have posted regarding refinishing the floor have given some good advice. **Q: I need help for my kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* You have any recommended island pendant lights to match the Weston rectangular 40" drop crystal chandelier in antique silver? A: I would like to see what the space looks like and a little more what your taste preferences are but I think the Juliska Amalia Column Clear Pendant would look beautiful with your chandelier. Circa lighting also has some wonderful pieces like theAgnes Pendant, or the Sloan Single Pendant with White glass in antique nickel **Q: I NEED HELP!!** *(in Design Dilemma)* I've never done this before so, bare with me; My fiancee and I recently bought a small house and we gutted it, and renovated it ourselves. The first thing I MUST tackle is the finishing touches on the bedroom. HOW DO I DRAPE/CURTAIN MY WINDOWS?! They're small so I can't do heavy drapes.. If you have any suggestion PLEASE LET ME KNOW! (Keep in mind I am on a VERY LIMITED BUDGET) Thank you!! (I got all windows from different angles I hope it helps..) A: I would suggest hanging window treatments as close to the ceiling as possible. I think roman shades, as pictured below with a beautiful pattern or texture would look really great in this space. It would also help to have a layer of solar shades under neath. They provide daylight to the space with giving you privacy that you want in a bedroom. The Shade Store is a good option for decent priced window treatments. Ikea is also good for drapes on the cheap. Sometimes you can get good deals on drapes at Target or World Market too. IKEA and Target also have nice looking rods that are relatively good quality for decent prices. Another option could be to make a feature out of the wall with curtains like one of these two images below Remember to hang them close to the ceiling! Good luck, have fun, and enjoy the fruit of your labor! **Q: Backyard decor** *(in Design Dilemma)* My husband and I are finally almost done with all of the hardscape in our backyard. Now I need help finishing all the details. My husband is making a table to fit over our fire pit when not in use, either coffee or dining size as we are not decided yet. I am considering adding something next to the bbq but not sure what. Maybe some type of prep area. I like the idea of hanging a couple lanterns from the pergola centered over the seating. I also am considering getting a wicker coffee table to go with our deck seating. I think the material will look good with the wood. Maybe metal as an option too? What are your thoughts on putting a ledge under the window above the deck? For a bar/food area. I also need ideas for what to put on the walls for decorations. I feel it is all so bare right now. My style is mostly transitional with some coastal, farmhouse, and rustic mixed in there as well. Help! TIA! Excuse the mess and toys, it's been super windy and toddler. Lol A: I would suggest treating this space like an outdoor room. Feel free to add some outdoor curtains to make the space feel more intimate. Loosen your patio string lights a bit... they are too tight right now. Add some hanging plants. Since you have kiddos make it fun for adults and kids alike. Use swings as seating for both age groups. Have some versatile storage for kid stuff too. Use wire baskets under benches to keep toys at bay and make it feel welcoming and intimate. Give some vertical height and greenery to the space too with some taller planters Have fun and enjoy your patio this summer! **Q: I very much need help picking out a sofa for our small living space...** *(in Design Dilemma)* We have a very small living space in our entry level, it going to be more of an informal area. Im having the hardest time picking a sofa that I think goes with these chairs. I purchased the chairs below, they are dark gray. I feel like buying them so dark was a mistake but its they are here and im stuck with them. Now im struggling to find a sofa style to match the style of these chairs. I love the link below but im having a hard time picking a color that isnt going to get ruined! I seem to love white :(. Ideally it should be under 80 inches (although the one above isnt). I like roll arm chesterfield sofas but thats what in our formal living room and I dont know if I want two of the same sofas (also i dont feel it goes with these chairs either).... A: I think the Avec sofa from CB2 might work for you. I am thinking a light blue would be a nice contrast to the dark grey. They have two sizes but I am thinking the apartment size which is 65" long might be a good size for you. Another thing you may want to look at if you must have a white sofa is velvet micro fiber. They clean up nicely or get a sofa that has a Sunbrella fabric on it that you can wipe down with a diluted bleach solution for tough stains. Just my own personal opinion...it looks like you have a lot of white or off white in your home already... don't be afraid to add some color like the blue sofa. I think you will love your room all the more for it. Best of luck...and have fun! **Q: Should I succumb? {to the bewitching allure of Marble kitchen, or not?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I love these two inspiration photos I found on Houzz. I've read much & heard much about the pro's & con's of Marble kitchen counter tops vs Granite or Engineered stone but still my heart keeps yearning for Marble even though many have warned me against it. My logical & 'practical' side say's go with granite, and man made looks well, man made to me. The heart is still shouting marble! marble! marble! Cooking is my hobby, I make a mess & use lemon & vinegar, wine & tomatoes. I clean up after but not as I'm cooking, I leave cleanup to the end. I also bake which marble is supposed to be wonderful for. I love the polished marble look more than honed. Would marble be a disaster for me? Or will I be forever thankful I chose it? After living with it are you happy with your marble or know anyone who is? Other comments? Opinions? Don't be afraid to burst my bubble if necessary, I can handle it. TIA! A: I think you will love it! If you have been back and forth on materials and keep coming back to marble, I think it is for you. I have had experience with many clients who absolutely love their marble counter tops. The one client that was super worried about maintaining the look of the natural stone so they ended up going with a quartz (man made) and after the install they wished they went with natural stone. Just remember this is a natural material and that it has a living finish... it is going to get worn and stained but that is part of the beauty of it. The fist few stains will drive you mad but after a good break in, you won't care and you will love it all the more for it. Yes, they are great for baking! Here some info for cleaning stains.
