I’m hoping to get some insight on what’s within normal or acceptable guidelines for granite installation. We got granite countertops installed recently and I’m wondering if it’s normal to have a variance in overhangs throughout the kitchen and also a gap between the granite & the wall. I also want to say that the company we chose did a laser template and uses a CNC machine to fabricate. For instance, our peninsula has a 1 1/4” overhang and the sink wall that connects to the peninsula has a 1 5/8” overhang. So a little over 1/4” right next to each other. Then in other areas of the kitchen it varies as well from 1 1/4” to 1 1/2” and at the most being 1 3/4”. Between the back wall and granite behind my sink run, there is a 1/4” gap down the whole wall getting slightly larger towards the very back corner. From my understanding, between the laser and CNC machine these issues shouldn’t have happened. The laser template guy told me that the laser accounts for walls being off and that it cuts the granite so that it’s snug against the wall so this is why I’m confused... I called the company and they said that they would come out and “build my wall out” so that there would not be a gap between my “eventually” tile backsplash and granite but I don’t understand if they use all this technology why should there be a gap in the first place? Or at least a gap this big? I’m extremely worried that if they build part of my wall out they’re going to make it looks worse when the backsplash gets installed because one part of my wall will extend out farther than the other. Also- they had no explanation for the overhangs being off and told me this was normal. Why are two overhangs that are right next to each other over 1/4” difference? Please tell me if this is normal and if I’m making a big deal out of nothing or if this is something to insist the company fix or re do. Thank you. The one thing that they did do great is our seam. The seam looks wonderful and you cannot even tell it’s there... A: I have never experienced that much of a variance with any of my fabricators. Typically 1/8"-1/4" because of wall variances is "normal" because the possibility of the walls being wonky. But the overhang seems strange to me. A CNC machine is only as good as the measurements entered in to the machine. Did the company come out and make a template before fabricating or did you provide the measurements? **Q: Paint color advise needed!! D:** *(in Paint)* I am desperately trying to choose a paint color for our "sun room" which faces north so it isn't especially sunny despite the large windows and french doors. I wanted to go with a dark cozy color, but don't know if it will be too much with the dark floors. The couch that will go in the room is a cream color and we will have an area rug and wicker rocking chair. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Here are the samples we have tried so far. Its similar to the blue color you tried- just a bit lighter. Benjamin Moore Lehigh Green is a happy medium between the two greens you have already tried. Outside of the colors you did already I happened to like the Benjamin Moore Williamsbrg Wythe Blue. Its a pretty aqua/gray color. **Q: Bookcase/storage in place of fireplace in new build** *(in Design Dilemma)* We do not want an actual fireplace, however I want the look of the TV over the fireplace, and want to keep the mantel itself. I am wanting ideas on how to build out the area below the mantel for storage rather than for a firebox. Thoughts? A: It doesnt look like it would be too difficult. My guess is this is this one in particular is an insert rather then built in to it- I would surmise that unless you blocked off the chimney pipe you may need to access it, or if you later want to use it as a fire place again, it being movable would be optimal. However, if you do build right in to it the basic structure of the idea would be the same except attached to the walls. **Q: backsplash ideas pls!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Would like a simple splash but no idea where to start. Help please and thank you! A: I do like the idea of using a different shape. But that entirely depends on what look your going for. **Q: Need help with mountain house exterior color & finishes!** *(in Building a Home)* Hello, we recently bought this mountain house and are remodeling in and out. We are planning to change the exterior color (or modify it somewhat). It's all a little too "same-same" as it is - even the interior had this color running all through it! We were thinking about adding trim around the windows to make them appear larger (front window specifically). We are planning to add some stone accents, possibly a shed roof overhang thing over the garage bays with a metal top, we like the thought of adding timber accents over the garage and elsewhere? We are also tearing off the back deck and redoing the whole thing and adding an extended roof and another shed roof...pictures and plans below. SIDE QUESTION: When using opaque stain, do you need to stick close to the original color or does it cover like a pain? A: You guys have similar climate as Alaska. With the mass amount of windows, things to think about when changing the color of the house is how the sun will affect it. However, I think you Colorado has figured out that you need air conditioning- We had several days this summer reaching 90, which is unheard of! Colors on the exterior will add to the absorption of the heat from the sun- a lot of homes here are lighter colors on the walls and a darker roof for that purpose. So there may have been a method to the madness in the colors scheme outside. From experience I can tell you that composite decking is great for not having to keep it maintained, but what sales people wont tell you is that it can become slick in the rain or ice, and if your using a shovel to remove snow- use a plastic one because a metal edge one is more likely to scratch the surface. **Q: Help fitting in a prep sink, please!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Good afternoon, Houzzers! I'm struggling to figure out how to fit a second sink into our kitchen renovation to separate the prep + clean-up zones while still having a large expanse of clear countertop for prep. Any ideas?
