How did I do? :-) My questions are: \- is this now too much rattan? \- does the dining table top look good, or would you suggest a different stain? (I like white and blue together but need reassurance that it works.) I also have a white beaded boho chandelier coming soon. :) \- has my decor veered off the coastal look now with these traditional pillows and floor lamp? Additionally, I would love advice on my den and entry way console area (last two pics). I decorated this space last year. Do you think it's good enough? What's missing? Is there anything else you would change? Thanks in advance! @loobab @loobab @freedomplace1 A: I think it all looks great, but I have a suggestion about the rugs. Unless you have a traffic pattern concern, make sure the front legs of the furniture in the LR are on the rug. You just have to move it out from the wall some and then that sofa won't look so unattached. I love that rug, BTW, and the pattern looks good repeated in the dining area. **Q: 90" Island - Help me with countertop shape** *(in Design Dilemma)* I'm having Fantasy Brown leathered marble templated soon on my 90" island. I'm debating on the shape - whether to go rectangle or have a slight arch to break up all the straight lines of my kitchen. Overhang in middle area (if I do arch) would be 17" past the base cabinet (supports will be installed). Are arches still popular for islands? TIA A: We had an arched overhang on one of the islands in our showroom. It was 15" deep. The display has since been replaced, so I can't post pictures. ETA: The island was between 86 and 90" long. **Q: Disjointed living/dining room...** *(in Design Dilemma)* I have no idea how to make this space more cozy. We’re pretty minimal, but this is TOO minimal and doesn’t feel grounded. Plants are out because of cat and toddler, and super dark wall colors are out as well since we live in Greece and it’s just too hot for that in the summer. Ignore the big rug in front of the piano, it’s temporary to appease my mother in law... 😅 What would you do?? A: Small thing, but what stood out to me is the color of the tablecloth. I'd like to see a dark neutral or a color picked up from the rug. If that pinky-red is in the rug, it doesn't show up well in the photo. **Q: Outlet Locations in Island with Columns** *(in Electrical Wiring)* Hi! We are redoing our kitchen and are in the process of finalizing our cabinet order. Our island is an "L" shape with two columns (which separate the kitchen from the living room) and two pony walls. The end of one of the pony walls does not have a column. Our existing kitchen island is two levels with several outlets being located in the slightly raised backsplash area. Our remodel will make the island all one level. My husband has drilled a hole into one of the columns and feels comfortable relocating the island light switch, garbage disposal and one of the outlets into that space. The second column is in the corner and is very difficult to reach from the island so we do not plan to place anything in there. There is a sink in the island so we will need another outlet on the other side. We will either need to drill into the end of the pony wall (but it does not sound hollow like the column) or drill into the side of the cabinet for the outlet. A few questions: 1\) Does the electrical code allow outlets, light switches, garbage disposals, etc. to be located in the column above the countertop (as long as it is less than 20")? 2\) If it is possible to cut out a section in the side of the pony wall, can we locate the outlet there (as long as not more than 12" below the countertop)? 3\) If we have to locate the electrical box in the cabinet, that cabinet is currently planned with drawers. It is a full overlay face framed cabinet by Conestoga. Would I have enough space to put an low profile electrical box on the side of the drawer...or would the drawer need to be modified? If there are other requirements I may be missing here, please let me know. Thanks so much! A: Just advice: Imagine you're having to take apart or change the island, now or in the future. Think about whether that would be more complicated than it has to be and then simplify it, if necessary. This isn't advice on how to wire, it's advice on how to plan. **Q: Deep Cabinets for OTR microwave ??** *(in Appliances)* I bought a microwave that is 16” deep. My cabinets are 16.5 deep. I have to bump out the microwave 3 inches for venting meaning I would have a huge gap in the back that normal bump out kits can’t fix. What other resolutions do I have? A: What kind of space do you have from the top of the range/cooktop to the bottom of the cabinet? And I'm with mackdolan and live wire oak. Talk to a sheet metal fabricator. **Q: Off center DR pendant light - What to do?** *(in Lighting)* As you can see from the pics below, the pendant light over the dining table is off centre for both the length (off by ~ 20") and the width (off by ~ 3-4"). Although it is centered with the 4 corner pot lights. In this modern open concept condo, this disconnect really stands out. It is an expensive matter to have to light & driver moved, and ceiling patched. Someone had suggested I swag the light over ( since there is excess cord length stuffed in the canopy. But I am concerned that that will not look contemporary. Is there a way to make it look sympatico? Also fyi, the ceilings are just under 8' - so not high. Suggestions? Thoughts? A: That's why you'd want to pick something smaller. Go to a lighting shop, not a big box lighting department, but a store where they have designers that help you make selections and figure this stuff out. Having another professional perspective helps.
