We look forward to serving you down the road! **★ — Al Semjonovs, Nov. 2015** > I hired this company to finish my basement. They estimated the project to take 6 to 8 weeks and will start mid-May. This project actually took them 18 weeks. There was a severe lack of communication to me on when things would be done. I was supposed to receive a 3 week schedule for when things were to be worked on (framing, electrical, drywall, etc). This 3 week schedule was only provided when I asked for it and the schedule did not match when things got done. There were a few weeks where nothing was done. When I asked why no work has been completed I was given a "force majeure" excuse as their subcontractors were too busy. So essentially their poor planning is an act of god. Also with regards to lack of communication I was charged extra for change orders that I did not sign off on, which their contract states all change orders need to be signed by the contractor and client. I tried bringing that to their attention and did not receive any response. > > In the beginning, when signing the contract I was given a list of providers to choose my flooring and plumbing fixtures from. I told them that I could take care of the plumbing fixtures myself but the owner wanted me to use their provider because they are "commercial parts and will last longer". I was suspicious of this claim but I went ahead and decided to use a provider they listed. They had a problem with acquiring the faucet I chose. They listed delta's website as a provider but couldn't acquire my faucet because they said "it has been phased out, and can't get it anywhere. Can you go to our provider's store and choose a new faucet." Strange, with a search on Lowes website I found my faucet and was currently in stock in stores around the area. This really frustrated me and I now don't trust these guys. I went ahead and bought the faucet myself, and they seemed surprised that I found it but still told me to go to their provider to pick out the rest of my bathroom fixtures. > > I will say the quality of work of the subcontractors is good but just the babysitting of trying to get the general contractor to finish the project and the lost of trust, I can't recommend them. **Comment from Alair Homes Longmont:** > Al, thank you for your honest opinion about the project. We over-promised and under-delivered, and for that we sincerely apologize. Our goal is to provide a consistent experience for all of our clients (as the rest of our reviews show) but we came up short with you. We were at capacity (20 projects) when your project was put in production and I felt we could handle yours because of the somewhat smaller scope for a basement finish, and we already had projects in your area, making the logistics feasible. > > Force Majeure can come into play, but it's not necessarily an Act of God; right now the construction industry is facing a labor shortage of at least 50% (a result of the recession) and although we have a large base of trade contractors, everyone was stretched very thin during this period. I should have considered this more and suggested a longer schedule to complete the work. Overall, we've been able to manage this effectively, but it came into play with your project. Regarding the plumbing fixtures, there can be differences in the same model, but the main reason we wanted to supply them was so we could include them in our full two year warranty; this makes it a lot easier and hassle-free for the homeowner should something go wrong later on. And, while it's true that the fixture you wanted was discontinued from our supplier, it was available from other sources. We were able to get the rest of the fixtures from our normal supplier. > > We have taken steps to improve our client's customer experience: we now have a project coordinator whose job is to help launch projects by assisting our clients with material selections and getting them ordered, and working with the project manager to handle all the things needed to put the project in production, such as submitting permit applications, sending work orders to trade contractors, setting schedules, and coordinating with the office staff. And, during the project, if any change orders are needed, the project coordinator will handle the paperwork and approvals in a timely manner. Also, when a contract is signed, the entire team (office and field) attends a mandatory "kick-off" meeting for each project to go over every detail to make sure that everything is in place to ensure a successful project. > > Some of the positive things about your project is that we met your budget and provided quality workmanship as you noted. Thanks for contacting us! **Q: Tile job advice- am I being too picky?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I'm struggling with how my new shower is turning out. I hired a very reputable contractor that stands behind their work and I want to be sure I am being reasonable. I am seeing uneven tiles/lippage all over my new shower. I noticed it before grouting and they assured me it would go away after grouting, but it is stilll really visible. They also wanted to try To blame crooked walls...to me it just looks like the thinset is uneven. Am I crazy or is this something I should insist is corrected. I'm bringing to their attention regardless because the more I look at it, the more unhappy I get. The tape is all the places I identified that have the worst unevenness. I can ignore the other minor mperfections. A: We install large tiles on shower walls all the time. The key to a proper installation and a good finished look starts at your wall studs. We make sure each wall stud is perfectly plumb and straight across the wall to the other end, meaning each stud lines up perfectly with the other studs. We checked this using a level and placing it across the studs, starting above the tub or shower pan and checking every 12 inches for any deviations, all the way up to where the tile will end, usually at or near the ceiling. Sometimes we have to shim out the studs or even take a planer or belt sander and shave or sand down the studs. If you do this, then the cement board will be perfectly flat on each wall, and the tile will be perfectly flat as well. But not so fast - you can still get "lippage" up to one sixteenth of an inch because these large tiles simply are not perfectly flat. Be sure to use the proper mortar designed for large format tiles. **Q: Vanity** *(in Photo Questions)* Where is the vanity from?
