No one knows quite how to create a sense of place like we do.

We work with people who appreciate what the Santa Barbara life is all about. People who not only want a home designed around their own unique lifestyle, but one that’s also sensitive to the local environment and connected to the beauty around it. This way of working comes directly from the deep rooted beliefs of our partners, Dave and Mary.

We’ve been here over 25 years, earning our creds as old-school locals, and constantly evolving our understanding of the central coast. All this time has helped us develop really close relationships with local craftsmen, designers, and agencies so our clients get the very best results. It’s also important to us that we spend as much time as possible with each client, from first sketches to the last day of the build, so we’re there every step of the way. It’s all of these things together that make the difference between a good project and a great one.

We know our work needs to be more than just beautiful, it also needs to compliment and respect this place we’ve all grown to love.

> NMA Architects created a remodel design for a neglected 60's house which was the least attractive property in an otherwise blooming neighborhood. The results are stunning. The new dwelling is concise in its thoughtful layout and creative use of space. All elements are clean, sophisticated yet comfortable, current yet timeless, and uniquely distinctive, The team worked closely with the contractor, landscape designer, and owners through the entire process. Excellent!

> Inspired by their portfolio of beautiful work, we hired Dave Mendro and team to design a modern ADU and Studio to complement our Spanish Mission home in Montecito, CA. After the first meeting, we knew Dave was the perfect fit for us. He was a great listener, asked insightful questions, and brought a unique perspective to the project. He welcomed the fact that we had architecture and design experience–it was a constructive collaboration. Our property had a lot of complications but Dave and his team brought positive attitudes and fresh ideas to the table. Everything he suggested was tasteful, well-considered, and detailed. Further, his insight into the permitting process enabled us to breeze through (and even skip a review or two!). We're grateful to Dave for his talent and delighted with the outcome.

> Over the years, my company has done many concrete foundations with NMA at the helm. Their designs have always been well thought out and fit into the context of the environment around them. From the beaches of Carpinteria to the hills of Monticeto to rugged coast line of Hollister Ranch, they all have been well planned out with a complete set of clear drawing on their intent for the design of the building. They have a great team of architects and staff that are easy to work with and are open to suggestions to enhance the project.

**★★★★★ — Facilitec, Nov. 2023**

> My experience with NMA was nothing short of exceptional. From our first meeting, through every step of the design process, navigating arduous architectural review & permitting processes, delivering requisite and sometimes complicated construction documentation and details, the experience was always professional and reflective of NMA's immense artistic and technical talents.

**★★★★★ — Julia Strickland, Oct. 2023**

> We had an outstanding experience with Mary Andrulaitis. She worked magic turning our small property into an exceptionally planned and curated space for our family. Every inch was put to good use in a creative way. In addition, she and her team were a pleasure to work with. We truly can’t recommend her highly enough!

**★★★★★ — John Heine, Feb. 2023**

> NMA did an extraordinary job mentoring us through conceptualizing and designing a house on what I can only describe as a challenging location. Mary Andrulaitis highly recommended adding our builder to the team immediately, which smoothed both the detailed design of storage – we had a substantial down-sizing issue – and finishing throughout. Discussion of home functionalities with Mary were incredibly important, and, after more than four years in residence have proved to be “spot on.“The design experience was superb. We thoroughly enjoy the results every day.

> I used this firm with great satisfaction on a comprehensive remodel 30 years ago. When I decided to move 2+ years ago, I re-engaged them as my architects for a total remodel of a newly purchased residence. Some of the faces have changed, but the quality of their work product and advice has not. They were superb start to finish! I recommend the firm without reservation.

> I am a General Contractor and I just competed a project for one of my clients that was designed by Dan Mendro of NMA Architect and it was a great experience.
> I enjoyed working closely with Dave and Kurt over the course of the project.
> They were extremely responsive to questions and problem solving.
> They use excellent software for details presentation and especially helpful was their App driven 3D program that allows both the owner and the tradesmen in the field to get a clear and understandable picture of the finished product.
> Great experience and looking forward to working with this team on the next one.

> The team at NMA was amazing to work with. We did a complete remodel on a house on Hill Road, and they helped us from concept to completion. The team was able to draw up three dimensional drawings for us to show our client conceptually what we wanted, which was an amazing tool (big thank you there to Kurt, who listened well and executed drawings quickly!). We really enjoyed working together, we found them to be a good value and they always had their work done on time! Can't wait for our next chance to get to work together!

> We had Dave Mendro design a home for us in Hope Ranch. Having never designed a home from the ground up before Dave was a dream to have. He enlisted the help of a builder to help us understand the costs and issues related to our design, and he helped us come up with value engineering ideas that didn't compromise the architecture integrity of what we wanted. He ushered us through the permitting process from Hope Ranch ARB, through the Santa Barbara and Coastal commission approvals, all done in record time. Additionally every time we needed to hire an engineer of any kind he always recommended 2-3 trades we could use, he provided a similar service to us when we were looking for builders. I cannot imagine a more dedicated or knowledgeable architect. He was truly a gem.

**★★★★★ — Carolyne Ferguson Design, Dec. 2018**

> I have worked with Mary (NMA) for over a year now on a project on Padaro Lane and she is truly exceptional. Her attention to home detail, budget, and willingness to work with all trades to provide the homeowner with the best possible quality ranks her at the top of my list of architects. Mary is not only knowledgeable in her field; she is very construction savvy and sees the project through from beginning to end as well. Mary is a team player and just a delight to work with in every way.

> Mary and the entire NMA team helped us create the home of our dreams. They listened carefully to our needs and preferences and then translated them into an extraordinary blend of handsome design and good old-fashioned practicality.

  - Location: Carpinteria, CA
  - Photos: 25
  - Description: Our clients dreamed of a home on the beach that was the perfect place for their family to gather and entertain their friends. Our design takes its cues from the classic California board and batt beach bungalow style, but with a modern twist for contemporary living. One unique detail says it all: when you enter their home, the first thing you encounter is a full wet bar, surrounded by the winding staircase rising to the second-floor suites. When guests first arrive, the family tradition is to hav…

  - Photos: 17
  - Description: Our client came to us with his beautiful Central Coast property situated at the base of a remote, rugged, steep-walled sandstone canyon and native coastal oak woodland habitat. Our design is inspired by his twofold request: to create an environmentally sensitive compound that is a special place of quiet solitude - a remote retreat for his family and friends to gather and commune with nature. And to create an apt environment for his practice of Qigong, an ancient Asian art of meditation and movem…

  - Location: Carpinteria, CA
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: Our client came to us with their amazing Carpinteria foothill view property. Their goal was to create a contemporary home that is the perfect backdrop to the dramatic ocean and mountain views… a special place for indoor-outdoor living. We worked closely with them to carefully place the spaces of their home to take best advantage of the unique vistas and natural features of their land… to create a home that’s nestled within and preserves the longstanding oak trees. We selected warm inviting mater…
- [Butterfly Beach Villa, Montecito](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/butterfly-beach-villa-montecito-pj-vj~154933)
  - Location: Montecito, CA
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: We immediately fell in love with the old-school, classic detailing and “bones” of this 1950s ranch-style Montecito bungalow… the broad, low pitch roof with deep overhangs, exposed rafters, wide plank board ceilings, board-on-board redwood wood siding… all the hallmarks of the ranch bungalow style. Fortunately, our client Kathleen felt just the same. The challenge we set ourselves was to carefully preserve all that wonderful character and, at the same time, achieve Kathleen’s desire to completely…

  - Photos: 8
  - Description: While these owners’ home survived the 2018 Montecito debris flow disaster, their detached garage/studio was destroyed, buried in several feet of mud and boulders. Once the property was restored, they recognized the need to not only rebuild their garage, but provide additional accommodations for their growing family as their adult children married. After acquiring an adjacent lot, we designed a modest stand-alone guest residence – a legal Accessory Dwelling Unit, or ADU. In the same classic Calif…
- [Del Mar Beach House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/del-mar-beach-house-pj-vj~6341715)
  - Location: Santa Barbara, CA
  - Photos: 27
  - Description: A blended family from LA County wanted their new beach home to serve as a backdrop for casual living – a getaway where siblings, parents, and grandparents can gather, relax, and create memories. On an exceptionally narrow oceanfront lot, we created light-filled, uncluttered interiors with a simple, monochromatic exterior. Traditional materials and finishes were edited and modernized to create bright, airy spaces. White painted wood, white glazed tiles, and warm wood and textiles create serene in…

  - Location: Santa Barbara, CA
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: We first visited this Santa Barbara Riviera ocean-view site with Paul and Maggie Tucker to consider their purchase of the property. We all immediately agreed that there was something special hidden within the quirky well-worn 1950s tract home that sat there neglected on the site… a gem with great potential for transformation. That's what excites us about remodels. The challenge of reinvention, embracing the old, and envisioning something completely new. Paul and Maggie share our love, appreciati…
- [Ricon Ranch](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/ricon-ranch-pj-vj~2450752)
  - Location: Santa Barbara, CA

  - Description: Rich and Krista Coffin are not only great clients but also great home builders who have helped us realize many of our custom designs over the years. It was a very special experience to have the opportunity to design their home with them and then have them build it. This project was a true collaboration… a labor of love. Visiting their rugged, remote, untouched ranch property is like stepping back in time into a beautiful serene coastal oak woodland. Forested with 100+ year old oak trees, it is a…
- [Mission Canyon Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mission-canyon-residence-pj-vj~5753927)
  - Location: Santa Barbara, CA
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: Our contemporary home design for Ron and Kevon is all about the indoor-outdoor Santa Barbara lifestyle. They were drawn to their dramatic foothill site because of the amazing 360-degree panoramic views. We felt the same inspiration. So, we purposely placed each living space in their home to capture a specific vista: sunrise and Rincon coastline to the east, Santa Barbara city and boat harbor to the south, sunset and the Campus Point coastline to the west, and the towering Los Padres mountain ran…
- [Coastal Beach Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/coastal-beach-residence-pj-vj~723146)
  - Location: Montecito, CA
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: On a secluded lane with bluff-top ocean and island views, a rancher from the San Joaquin Valley purchased two neighboring properties with a goal of creating an oceanside compound to escape the heat and dust of ranch life. While remodeling the existing home, we got busy designing a new home on the extra-narrow lot next door. The challenge was to create a feeling of spaciousness, and to blur the boundary between the two properties - connecting them for shared uses and opening views, while at the s…

  - Location: Montecito, CA
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: Over the years, many clients have preferred home designs that trend to be larger, more detailed, and more elaborate - “bigger is better”. Tom’s vision for his home was something much simpler than that. So, for his design we went back to the basics. We went for quality vs. quantity… with what is just essential and needed for modern living. The resulting size, scale and the understated feel of the home is fantastic. It has a Zen-like simplicity and elegance. We’ve learned a lot from the process of…

  - Location: Santa Barbara, CA
  - Photos: 41
  - Description: The owners had a large program, but a pretty simple wish – to create a casually classic beach home that would feel cozy for a simple weeknight dinner for two in front of the TV, and also accommodate much larger family gatherings and formal events. And they didn’t want anyone to ever feel they couldn’t kick off their shoes and curl up on the sofa, even if there was a little sand involved. We kept the materials and colors simple and clean in an effort to maintain the “California cottage” style des…
- [Glen Oaks Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/glen-oaks-residence-pj-vj~2716973)
  - Location: Montecito, CA
  - Photos: 20
  - Description: Our most successful homes are those that make a connection between the indoors and outdoors so that they feel grounded to the beauty that surrounds them, and the Glen Oaks Residence is no exception. Nestled amongst 200 year old oaks, sycamores and boulders on a secluded creek-side lot, our biggest challenge was to create a home that sensitively coexists with its natural environment. This modern version of the classic California cottage incorporates floodplain protection measures that directly at…

  - Location: Santa Barbara, CA

  - Description: Jack and Holly had a modern vision for their “forever home” – a completely new aesthetic for a semi-retired couple who’d always resided in a very traditional home on the East Coast. Their new home needed to be a comfortable backdrop for a lifetime of travel and art collections, open plan, conducive to an indoor-outdoor lifestyle, considerate of accessibility and aging in place, and environmentally conscious while adhering to the warm, modern aesthetic. The design takes into consideration the c…

  - Description: A single-level Spanish Revival home, originally designed by famed Architect James Osborn Craig in 1919, is the jewel of this oak-studded 4-acre compound our clients purchased to create their own idyllic Shangri-La. The major renovation/addition includes the expansion and replacement of two unfortunate 1980s additions, making them more cohesive with the original architecture. Both interiors and exteriors remain true to the original Spanish details and materials, with updates for modern living. As…

  - Description: Judy Lamb loves her childhood family home where she grew up: an original 1950's California Ranch-style Dutch gable tract house. We do too! We worked closely with Judy and her husband Ricky to preserve, enhance, and update their old home for contemporary living. As viewed from the street: their home appears just as it has for the past 70 years except for our single design intervention: an oversize orange framed glass pivot entry door. We love how this stealth design approach respects the original…

  - Location: Santa Barbara, CA

  - Description: One of our roles as architects is to help our clients explore new ideas and open their way of thinking. However, every so often, our role is reversed and we have a client that comes to us with an idea that pushes us outside of our comfort zone. Paul and Karen Kurth came to us with an idea for their new Santa Barbara home that was quite unlike anything we had ever done before: a contemporary concrete and glass home to capture the 360° panoramic views of their dramatic hilltop site. Our design sol…

  - Description: The Handtmanns are great patrons of the arts. To create their sense of place, we envisioned their guesthouse residence design as a work of art. Sculptural building forms and materials flow inside and out. A high ceilinged second-floor studio living space provides an open loft feel with views of the surrounding landscape. A garden setting with lush plantings as the backdrop to dramatic sculpture pieces and a reflecting pool. We wanted to create just the right sense of place for lovers of art.
