**★★★★★ — Mark Levine, Jan. 2018**

> We worked with Monica to renovate a warehouse/home in historical Lafayette Square. While we had a vision, she provided the critical architectural knowledge to guide our renovation. Not only did she provide design consultation, but she helped us maneuver through the permitting, approvals and engineering challenges that come with a project of this type. Monica is easy to work with, responsive and provided great ideas and insight. We will continue to work on this property and will call on her to advise us in the future.

**Comment from ARBA Studios:**

> Thank you, Mark. It is not every day an architect gets to work on a fun, unique project with such amiable clients!

**★★★★★ — Tanya Ramm, June 2014**

> ARBA Studios provided design work for a lower level finish. We were impressed with Monica's ability to provide a design site-unseen, as we live several states away. We will most certainly consider ARBA for future renovation projects.

## Community Q&A

**Q: What are the heights?** *(in Photo Questions)*

How high is the ceiling and how far up does the paneling go? I'm doing a project soon and this ratio looks great!

A: What about lining up the top of the paneling with the top of the window (minus the arch)? This would put the top of the paneling a bit below the top of your doors, like in the photo you posted.

**Q: Living/Dining: Help making it more bright, coastal, and modern** *(in Home Decorating)*

We recently moved to a new state and are near the ocean. We'd like our house to feel coastal, but not overtly so (i.e., no dolphin pictures or "this way to the beach" signs). Our biggest issue is that our existing furniture pieces are quite traditional, and we don't have the budget to scrap everything and start from scratch with modern coastal pieces. So we're looking for creative, budget-friendly ideas for modern/transitional rugs, window treatments, art, decor pieces, and light fixtures that will allow us to make use of at least some of our existing traditional furniture.

Please note that there's a place to hang a light in the vaulted living room, and I'm tempted to buy a large, eye-catching fixture... but I need to purchase two coordinating fixtures (one for the dining area, and one for the stairwell) and I'm not quite sure how matchy-matchy the light fixtures need to be. Also, it seems that we need at least one more chair to round out the seating, and perhaps some TALL open, light shelving units on the very expansive, empty wall???

Thanks in advance for your help!

A: What about painted beadboard on the wall on either side of the fireplace? it's not much area once you take your windows out, and that would definitely bring a subtle "coastal" feel:

**Q: height recommendations of1/2 wall** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We’re taking down part of a wall between the kitchen (renovating) and dining/living room. How high would you suggest for the remaining wall?? There will be quartz on top of it. 12” wide

A: If the goal is to create a more open feel between the two spaces, I would simply widen the doorway enough to be centered on the dining table. (Check the structure first, of course!) I would not do a half wall at all - they tend to look like an afterthought unless they have kitchen cabinets against them, and it doesn't seem like a pass-through is really necessary since you can always use the kitchen table for that. Save yourself the cost of the granite wall cap!

**Q: modern house exterior tips** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello All,

We are getting a Home built and wanted some input from the community on tips to modernize the exterior look.
We live in AZ and houses here can get a bit cookie cutter like.

We still need to stick to the basic structure (unfortunately), but are looking for any tips that will give you a modern curb appeal. Landscaping is an option, we are already choosing gray as an exterior color with a slightly lighter trim. How about pavers, garage door, lighting, and our biggest issue - Stucco... can we get away with a modern look with Stucco? Any suggestions would be great!

**Q: POLL: Light or Dark Bottom Pools?** *(in Polls)*

So many pools and so little time! There are so many gorgeous pools to look at here, and it's hard to pick a favorite. If you were to choose between a light or dark bottom pool, what would you prefer?

VOTE and tell us about it in the comments!

A: "Adult" pools = dark - it looks better, more sophisticated.
"Kid" pools = light - it feels (and probably is) safer!
Now YOU have to make the call on which is more important for a given project!

**Q: POLL: If you could only paint your walls one color what would it be?** *(in Polls)*

If you had to choose one color to paint your walls and never change it, what would you choose?

VOTE and let's hear the details in the comments. (Especially paint names.)

A: Benjamin Moore AF-25 Paper Mache is my go-to "white-white" for modern spaces. Always looks fresh, with just the perfect hint of warmth!
