**Q: Solid hardwood vs Engineered Hardwood** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need advice on whether to install solid or engineered hardwood on the main level of our home. We currently have solid natural maple in the kitchen but have carpeting everywhere else. I have gone back and forth-we need over 1500 sq feet so price has become an issue. Will engineered look inferior next to solid if the thickness difference is managed with underlayment? Should we do the same flooring in the bedrooms? Our front room is very large and sunny so wondering if a darker color would be better or if we should continue the same throughout. Any ideas would be appreciated!! I am attaching pics of my kitchen floor and s pic of our large living room.

A: Depending on the situation of the slab and other things, rift and quartered 2.25" oak flooring might be a better solution than that of engineered. Engineered has heat limitations and it can also dry out. This can cause dry cupping and the adhesive can loosen up from the top layer of hardwood and cause delimitation.

**Q: Need help for dining room** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I just renovated our kitchen which left the dining room dark and outdated.  The kitchen has cream colored cabinets and stainless steel appliances.  The faucet is brushed nickel.   I did add a new rug and painted the window sill white.  I need a buffet table to the right that cannot be more than 36 inches wide and I need to decorate the walls.  I also need a new light fixture.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

A: You have a fair amount of brown tones in the space. If you want to go a little more modern with the space I'd go with more of a white wash look. It would really be cool with the wide plank floors. I'd also suggest going with a matte sheen.

**Q: Need help finding a real hardwood floor to use** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello. I am getting ready to redo my kitchen and have been carrying around the attached picture for inspiration. I LOVE these floors and want to use them in my kitchen and throughout my whole house. 
I was advised that prefinished floors might not be the best way to go due to the curvature on the sides (you will see greater lines between planks), and they are harder to refinish later. 
So, I'm looking for real wood. But, then, the concern is, are the knots going to show the plywood below? Does anyone know what kind of wood I can use, and what stain? If I can't get this exact look, do you have ideas of something similar (pictures and details would be so helpful).

**Q: Ebony stained staircase. advice please!!!!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

we are scraping the floors now and I really love the look of ebony stained stairs. 
now reading reviews I see that ebony is really not practical, shows all dirt n dust!! but I'm thinking maybe if it's just for the steps then it's not so bad?!? anyone with advice that has made it? attaching a pic for a sample.

A: I have done dark stairs before and I would suggest using a Hardwax or penetrating oil. Because it doesn't form a film and penetrates the wood it won't show the dirt as much.

**Q: Our kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Having a really time deciding on a paint colour in our kitchen.  The cupboards are wood, floors and ceiling are wood.  There are large windows in the room but the room appears very dark.  I find light paint colours wash out the wood but worried that a dark colour will even make the kitchen darker than it already is.  Also have to be careful as the kitchen opens into our living room.  It is currently painted a cinnamon colour with a yellow beige accent wall.  Please help!

A: If you went with a darker stain color on the floor, painted the cabinets white, and darker countertops would really make the space have nice contrast.
