I am looking for options that will help warm it up and look somewhat decent. We are.... Keeping appliances Opening to leaving or staining cabinets. Or leaving and updating hardware only. What to do with the horrible color counter/backsplash combo Updated flooring for sure (it is horrible and never looks clean) A: Paint the cabinetry white and replace the hardware. That will actually work well with your countertop and backsplash. Lose the blinds and valance. If you need something on the windows a simple lightweight translucent white cafe curtains will be attractive and go with the new white cabinets and purple counters. If it is in the budget consider replacing with white cork....easy on the joints and feet. If not, toss a light rug on the floor. Keep clutter to a minimum and add easy DIY warm under counter lighting. It will look like a new kitchen and you can save for your ultimate redo or other priorities. Good luck and please post before and after photos. **Q: Should i do mirror's, white, or half/half with the IKEA PAX closet?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I have a walk through closet and considering the sliding PAX door system on both sides of the wall. I was wondering if i should have the both sides doors be all mirror, all white, frosted white glass or half half? A: I am assuming one mirror is on the closet side and the other on the bath side....not opposite each other. Even if they are opposite each other they can be useful to see how you look in the back. These are very small spaces. **Q: Late 70's Colonial Foor plan** *(in Building a Home)* We trying to figure out a way to update or modernize our Colonial floor plan. Typical blan and boring floor plan... Wife has a disability that makes it hard for her to climb stairs. here is a idea we came up with. We are kinda stumped on floor plan and looking for some ideas to be pitched at us. Floor plan that we are considering..... A: What you're doing for your wife is beautiful. Your plan is doable with a few tweaks. You don;t need an architect. If you move load bearing walls you will want a structural engineer and a draftsperson. I am sorry about some of the responses you have received. Sadly there are some impolite people of this site. I need to identify the appliances and the purpose for other things drawn in your planned change. I have your bath and closet reconfigured to give you ample passage space. I think you will like it. The ideas I have for the remainder will depend on the appliances and storage you have allowed in the kitchen. I will wait to hear from you, Breathe deeply, this too will pass! **Q: Kitchen design delimma** *(in Design Dilemma)* Just starting to plan kitchen remodel.Need some ideas(with pics if possible). The cons of our existing space are: 1\. non existent pantry 2\. half of kitchen is unused (i don't want a bfast area 3\. the width of the kitchen could be a little more (currently it is 11 ft wall to wall and the length is 17 ft) 4.not a lot of useable cabinet space I would love to have 1\. fridge that is bigger (we had to get counter depth since wall to entry doorway space is 31 inches and most of the regular refridgerators are close to 35 inches) 2\. gas range 3\. center island. 4\. a pantry I lean towards more of a contemporary design :) Thanks :) A: yes, if you have gas heating you can have a gas range. I do suggest a goas top bu electric oven for better baking temperature accuracy. **Q: Need ideas for what to plant in front of building.** *(in Landscape Design)* I need ideas on what to plant here. The fact that it is divided up into two parts with one side in the shade, the other in the sun adds a level of difficulty (so perfectly symmetrical is out). Also, i don’t want to put anything tall close to the building for fear that it would block the light to the bottom unit. Any suggestions? This is zone 6 facing south (i think). A: If you are truly facing south the shady side is not shady all day. I suggest you plant colorful spring bulbs of your choice overplant with hellebores for late winter. everblooming perennial lilles and perennial salvia for summer blooms, asters and pansies for autumn (the pansies will reappear the next spring but will need to be replaced the following fall) and one small (1 ball) topiary boxwood in the center of each side for decorating at Christmas. You will have an everchanging colorful city garden. Everything is perennial except the pansies and as the perennials spread you will no longer have room for pansies. Enjoy! This will be such a happy entry. **Q: standard or counter height kitchen table** *(in Design Dilemma)* My husband would like me to get my custom made oval copper top table done in counter height (he is very tall) instead of standard height. if we had a bigger space I think I could get away with Counter height. what are your thoughts? (New light fixture is coming as well) A: Table height please. Counter height is too low for bar stools and too high for chairs. While you can get proper height chairs the space will appear a bit tight unless you go with a bitsmaller table than the one you now have. I will be awkward. If you use copper and like the way it weathers naturally make certain they use raw copper and cover it with plastic wrap to deliver and install. Raw copper should sit a few days. If you get fingerprints on it ,wipe them off asap or they will show for years. Copper has natural antimicrobial proprieties.
