> We told Roger what we wanted but Roger had a vision for the job. We're ultimately glad he used his vision. Aesthetically, the job better than we thought. A border color and 45 degree paver setting make a nice effect. The wall was better than expected with french-drainage, lighting and irrigation tubing ready to go. You can't see it, but (2) downspouts from the roof used to run down the driveway. Roger's guys piped all that underneath and you don't see a thing. From a logistical and functional standpoint, I (an engineer) was very happy with the way things are hidden and the flexibility they provide moving forward. ## Community Q&A

**Q: Are the pavers sealed?  If so, what product was used?** *(in Photo Questions)*

We recently installed these pavers and are looking to seal them.

A: Hi thanks for the inquiry.  Yes, we sealed them with Seal N' Lock out of Florida.  I am a certified applicator of their unique paver sealing products and we use specialty application equipment. 
The sealer we use is a "color enhancer" but it is actually their "Wet Look" product that we "dumb down" with 2 coast applied at 3:1 with water and 2:1 with water for the final coat that results in a "egg shell" finish if you are familiar with house paints!

**Q: Love color** *(in Photo Questions)*

What type of paver and color is it?

A: Belgard’s Catalina Grana, 3 piece large combo, Victorian color blend, with 6x9” Catalina Soldier Course borders in dark charcoal.

**Q: Can you get rid of those white marks on the pavers?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I just installed these and mine did the same thing. Those marks drive me nuts.

A: That  could be “high-point” scuff marks from the “textured” pavers rubbing against one another during transport (the case in this photo) or possibly the paver crew did not cover the metal plate vibrator when running it over the pavers to compact the sand in the paver joints (the creation of “interlock”)!  Solution: clean the pavers =  power wash and possibly broom scrub using Paver Shampoo by Alliance, flush with clean water, let thoroughly dry, then apply a “color enhancing” paver sealer.  If it is over larger paver surface areas, it could be efflorescence = mineralization weeping through the pavers from the manufacturing process or wicking up from below the paver (from water/soil or base materiales below the pavers).  Then the pavers need to be washed, stiff bristle broomed/scrubbed  using an “efflorescence cleaner” (by Alliance or others), then flushed with clean water, let thoroughly dry and again... seal the pavers using a “color enhancing” sealer which will darken and enrich the paver colors.  Once applying a sealer you should think about resealing every 2-3 years.  Cost: around $1.50/ square foot.  To see what that might look like, lightly wet the pavers with water using a hose and spray nozzle on the “mist” setting!  We can possibly do that if you are interested....

**Q: Paver and wall block color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This is Belgard's Victorian color blend (light gray, charcoal with golden tan highlights) for both pavers and their Weston wall with charcoal (accent) 6x9" Catalina Grana border laid in what we call a "Soldier Course."  Three piece random pattern in the fields.

**Q: Are these Artisan Slate Premier size only or mixed with regular pieces** *(in Photo Questions)*

Are these all the larger Premier pieces or did you mix both the regular Artisan Slate and Premier pieces for this?

A: This is a 3 piece random placement of regular Artisan Slate - not their Premier series. However to use the Premier series would be "on trend" as folks are looking for larger sized pavers, especially with a larger sized driveway - it equates to "elegance!"  However, for the borders we use a Holland (brick sized) paver in Charcoal and as per the pattern it gives a more defined and stately edge!

**Q: What color is this Belgard paver?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Yes, this is the Bella color blend and they were not sealed which explains the high point white spots.  Those will tone down in time, however having personally sealed over 500,000 sq. ft. of pavers in my career, I recommend and am a proponent of "specialty paver sealers."  I am a certified applicator of "Seal 'N Lock."  I like the color enhancing sealers as they will darken and enrich the colors.  However, do note, once you seal your pavers you should consider having them resealed (and always with the same product as initially used) every 2-3 years.  You don't paint your house one time and call that good... !!!  What will happen if you don't reseal - they will fade back to the original installation look. Plus, over time, pavers are subject to fading from the suns UV rays.  Check to see if your sealer has UV inhibitors!  Also we give the pavers a "tune-up" each time we come out to reseal = power wash/hydro-scrub the pavers clean, resand broken or cracked paver joint sand, then reseal to rejuvenate/darken/enrich the colors again!
