A: Perhaps the shower door swings both ways. If not, it should definitely swing out.

**Q: Replacing carpet with wood floors -- should it match surrounding wood** *(in Design Dilemma)*

What is the best way to go? When taking out carpet in the living room, to match the wood floor that meets it or try a different colored wood flooring? I have white oak down now -- do the same?

A: One thing you don't mention is the kitchen flooring. Will it also be replaced?  Also, what are the dimensions of the living room? Is it long and narrow, square? Are there hallways or rooms leading off of the living room that will require new flooring?
My first solution would be to continue the existing wood flooring in the same colour and in the same direction. If your trades person is unable to match the floor colour, then consider installing the new wood flooring perpendicular to the existing. This could then be installed in the kitchen as well, giving the entire space a cohesive design. 
You wondered if a darker floor would make the space feel smaller. No, the new wood floor will blend with the value of your sofa thus making the space feel less chopped up. The wood floor will have a reflective quality which means that light will reflect off of it. You may, at some point, wish to add an area rug to ground the living space.
